The compact Magic Wand Portable Scanner With Auto-Feed Docking Station from VuPoint Solutions combines the best of both a portable scanner and a desktop scanner in 1 unit. The Magic Wand scans documents, photos, newspapers, and virtually any smooth surface onto a microSD card up to 32GB. The scans can be saved as either JPG or PDF files. The scanner can be used anywhere thanks to the unit's rechargeable battery which lasts for approximately 400 scans. When you're at your desk, simply attach the Magic Wand to the docking station and automatically feed pages through the scanner for more accurate scans. With a scan area of up to 8.35x130.0" (at 300 dpi), the scanner can store any letter or legal size document or image. For higher quality results, the resolution can be set to 600 or 900dpi, or 1200dpi when docked. Take the portable scanner with you to the library and scan what you need for later; no need to waste paper or money on photocopies. When you get home, simply connect the scanner to your computer via the supplied USB cable and transfer your scans and charge the battery. If you scan a text document, once your file is on the computer, you can use the included OCR (optical character recognition) software to convert the scan into editable text (Windows only).

It depends on what kind of scanning you need done.

Comments about VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand Portable Scanner With Auto-Feed Docking Station:

I bought this magic wand to scan my inked artwork to color them using computer software like Photoshop and Manga Studio. It is very portable; I easily brought the entire box with me across the Pacific Ocean.

In docked mode, I can also feed a stack of loose pages one-by-one through and scan them in short order. Using only the wand, I can scan pages in my bound sketchbook, whereas pressing it against a flatbed scanner instead would distort the image near the binding.

    Usage Tip:
When using the wand by itself, it seems it doesn't scan the first inch rolled, so I start rolling from just off the image.

    Limitations:
It has low, medium, and high resolution settings, but they are all 72 dpi; it just changes the number of pixels.

When my image's smallest dimension is too wide for the scan window on the wand (and corresponding slot on the dock) is only so wide, it is best to use a flatbed scanner instead to scan an image in segments and piece them together on the computer. This is because, when scanning with the wand by itself, my hand must move it both in a straight line (it easily meanders unless I move it along a T-square) and at an even speed (not slowing or quickening), or I will get images that are subtly distorted, making it nigh-impossible to perfectly match up my patchwork lines.

    In short:
The upsides are portability, the feed-through feature, good at scanning bound pages and documents with one very long dimension.

The downsides are that it is easy to subtly distort the scanned image when done by hand and that it doesn't (that I've found) scan at a higher dpi.

Comments about VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand Portable Scanner With Auto-Feed Docking Station:

I use the hand scanner on site for client reviews and consultations. It's great to get a written copy of documents I need to leave with clients or to get copies of meeting notes taken by others (With their permission). It's much better than sending someone out of the room to make copies.I use the feeder attachment on my desktop for regular document capture. I put the old, big flatbed scanner in in the closet and only pull it out when I need a HiRes scan or a bigger scan. I got back lots of desk space!

Comments about VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand Portable Scanner With Auto-Feed Docking Station:

I bought this because it was portable and battery operated. So far so good. This device can copy a document or image and captures in color so what you are looking at is what you capture. The only thing I would add is to practice with it a little because if you are not using the dock the image can alter slightly if both ends aren't tracking at the same speed.

I have thousands of old family photos to scan and the Magic Wand is fast and easy to use. On a few of the old photos faint lines appear when scanned, but I think this is because the photos are such low resolution to begin with. Higher resolution photos look great! I'm having lots of fun with this product!

I am using this scanner to scan in my Blu-ray/DVD covers to a program I use to organize/document my collection. With the auto feeder dock I scan in at 1200 DPI and resize down to a compatible size. At full 1200 resolution the quality is a little rough, but scaling down fixes that as I don't need life size dimensions. 12 sec per cover x 2500+ covers... ya I will be at it for a while, but I know it will be done right with confidence.

Only portable scanner with autofeed I've found that doesn't require a PC to operate. You do need power from a standard wall outlet to run the autofeed dock if you don't have it hooked up to a PC via a USB cable. Small footprint and weight, surprisingly fast for something this small, the direct to PDF scanning option works great.

I bought this scanner to scan a large number of photographs. Initially, there were a few hiccups such as a line appeared in the scanned pictures. Later found out the problem in that the scanner needed to be cleaned frequently. Once I got every think worked out, the scanner works pretty fast and with decent quality. So far, I have scanned more than 900 pictures.

Comments about VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand Portable Scanner With Auto-Feed Docking Station:

Purchased this specifically for scanning textbook pages to reduce weight of backpack. It scans pretty well, but would be better if the scanning area had one edge that was end of the wand. Also can be difficult to get full page given how scan uses roller wheels (when wheels get of page, you lose top or bottom). When docked, the paper scanner works great. Photographs are not so good, even at highest resolution as there are some lines that show up. Setup is a little annoying due to needing a small object like a paperclip. Overall though, it worked straight out of the box and is a good value for the money.

very good for docs, adequate for books, not for photos. Bought for scanning textbooks. It`s adequate, but would be better if the scanning area was not symmetrical in order to get closer to the binding. Still very nice and easy to use.
