WD's innovative energy efficient technology reduces power consumption and lowers the operating temperature. The built-in NASware technology enables seamless integration, robust data protection and optimal performance for systems operating in NAS and RAID environments.

NAS Compatibility
The WD Red Hard Drive features NASware technology. This advanced firmware technology enables seamless integration, robust data protection and optimal performance for systems operating in NAS and RAID environments.
NASware Technology
The NASware technology improves NAS storage performance by eliminating common hard drive concerns in NAS systems like compatibility, integration, upgradeability, reliability and cost of ownership.
3D Active Balance Plus
Hard drives that are not properly balanced may cause excessive vibration and noise in a multi-drive system that would reduce the life span of the hard drives and degrade their performance over time. The enhanced dual-plane balance control technology significantly improves overall drive performance and reliability.
Enhanced Reliability
The WD Red Hard Drive, with a 35% MTBF improvement over standard desktop drives, is designed and manufactured to be a reliable and robust solution.
Compatibility
The WD Red Hard Drive is specifically designed and tested for small offices and home offices' 1-5 bay NAS systems.
IntelliPower
IntelliPower is a fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate and caching algorithms designed to deliver both significant power savings and solid performance. Additionally, the WD Red Hard Drives consume less current during startup, reducing the peak loads on systems during the boot process.
Acronis True Image WD Edition Software
Acronis True Image WD Edition Software allows you to completely clone the current system drive onto the new WD Red Hard Drive. The cloning makes an exact copy of the old system drive onto the new drive, including the operating system, applications, data, preferences and email settings. Acronis True Image WD Edition also supports WD's Advanced Format Drives and ensures that all partitions are optimally aligned.
Premium Support
WD offers free dedicated 24x7 support line exclusively for WD Red Hard Drive customers.* 1
Energy Efficient
The innovative technology of the drive reduces the power consumption and lowers the operating temperature making the WD Red Hard Drive a reliable and an affordable solution for 24x7 NAS environments.

Purchased the WD Red as an external storage unit whilst I build a new NAS server command center for my workstation/network. I purchased the Newer Technology Voyager S3 USB 3.0 Dock for 2.5/3.5 SATA I/II/III HDD as the temp docking station for the Red drive (and also to access files on older 3.5" drives I have). Picture is of my actual items.

      Primary concerns were:
      1. This drive is designed for 24/7 operation - so will it work as a temporary external hard drive that lives on my workstation?
      2. Speed - how will it run over USB 2.0 and or 3.0? So far, so good, but this drive isn't designed for top-speed file transferring.
      3. Noise - Least amount of operating noise compared of all of my other 3.5" drives. Very happy. Also stays very cool while powered on.
      4. Expansion opportunities - this drive will probably end up living among many of its Red brothers and sisters in the Qnap TS-1270U-RP 12 or Synology equivalent, so these drives have been purchased strategically for that reason.
      5. It does what I need it to do, and it does it well. I bundles the Newer Tech Voyager with this drive to backup a Lacie Porche external that needed formatting. It did it, no issues, and will be used in a server environment.

      Conclusion:
Happy - flawless thus far. Push the power button, desktop icon appears immediately. Zero compatibility issues, zero issues at all. Happy camper. The speed of the Red won't blow your pants off, but its exactly as I expected it. Thanks B&H!

This hard drive is used to expand the storage capacity of my Drobo. So far it works great but I've only had it for a week. It's fast enough for my needs, the price was good, and it shipped quickly. I got it a few days early.

Comments about 2 TB WD Red SATA 3.5" NAS Hard Drive:

WD still makes some of the best mechanical Hard drives on the market, and with the high cost of SSD drives . . . this drive may be slower to start-up and shutdown, but when you compare the cost per GB of storage, it's not a bad choice even today.
With a 5 year warranty and much lower cost, you may be able to afford spending a few extra minutes of time while working with your computer.
I didn't rate it a 5 start only because of the fact that it is mechanical and not solid state.
