NAS Compatibility
The WD Red Hard Drive features NASware technology. This advanced firmware technology enables seamless integration, robust data protection and optimal performance for systems operating in NAS and RAID environments.
NASware Technology
The NASware technology improves NAS storage performance by eliminating common hard drive concerns in NAS systems like compatibility, integration, upgradeability, reliability and cost of ownership.
3D Active Balance Plus
Hard drives that are not properly balanced may cause excessive vibration and noise in a multi-drive system that would reduce the life span of the hard drives and degrade their performance over time. The enhanced dual-plane balance control technology significantly improves overall drive performance and reliability.
Enhanced Reliability
The WD Red Hard Drive, with a 35% MTBF improvement over standard desktop drives, is designed and manufactured to be a reliable and robust solution.
Compatibility
The WD Red Hard Drive is specifically designed and tested for small offices and home offices' 1-5 bay NAS systems.
IntelliPower
IntelliPower is a fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate and caching algorithms designed to deliver both significant power savings and solid performance. Additionally, the WD Red Hard Drives consume less current during startup, reducing the peak loads on systems during the boot process.
Acronis True Image WD Edition Software
Acronis True Image WD Edition Software allows you to completely clone the current system drive onto the new WD Red Hard Drive. The cloning makes an exact copy of the old system drive onto the new drive, including the operating system, applications, data, preferences and email settings. Acronis True Image WD Edition also supports WD's Advanced Format Drives and ensures that all partitions are optimally aligned.
Premium Support
WD offers free dedicated 24x7 support line exclusively for WD Red Hard Drive customers.* 1
Energy Efficient
The innovative technology of the drive reduces the power consumption and lowers the operating temperature making the WD Red Hard Drive a reliable and an affordable solution for 24x7 NAS environments.

I own 7 of these. Two of them have been RMA'd. The other 5 are labeled NASware 2.0, so I assume they're a later run than the others.

I was using the first two in a FreeNAS server along with a mix of other drives from Samsung, Seagate, and WD. I upgraded to a Synology DS1513+ and bought 5 new WD Reds, and they've all been working flawlessly for a few weeks now. WD's return process is pretty simple, if slow, and the replacements for the RMA'd drives are en route back to me. I'm going to keep them for cold spares.

Bottom line, these are good for what they claim to be good for... small (5-bay or less) NAS systems. Anything more complex and you should take a look at WD's Raid Edition drives, or Seagate or Samsung's offerings in their respective enterprise lines. These, though, are cheap enough to have a couple extras and still pay less than the higher end drives.

I use this WD hardrive as my main storage for video editing and photoshop. It's actually faster than my main hardrive on my computer and so far am totally happy with the performance. It was immediately recognized by my system and after initialization its working great. I will definitely buy another when I run out of space.

I installed 2 of these drives inside a Synology DS408 NAS. They are sitting next to, 2 older WD 1TB drives and they are running quieter and faster so far. How long they last will be the decider if I buy them again.

I bought a couple of these to populate my new DS213j. It's been a few weeks now and no problems so far. 3TB was the most efficient size - dollars per terabyte. It's hard to believe my first hard drive, at 20MB, seemed big back in 1983.

It holds data. I don't know what else to say. Thanks!

I'll mention that since it's WD you have to format the drive before using it because it's has that really stupid proprietary program installed.

No complaints, they read, they write, and hey they're on all the time without issue. S.M.A.R.T. support and is working in tandem with other drives using Hybrid Raid.

I have bought two of these and installed them in Trendnet T-200, 2-bay NAS. Installation was easy and drives came up good. So far no issues, working good.I have always prefferred WD over Seagate for hard drives and till date haven't been wrong.I will recommend this drives.

Comments about 3 TB WD Red SATA 3.5" NAS Hard Drive:

I have a Raid 6 linux server using 9 drives. The raid build when adding drives flushes out most problems, and I have seen none. I hold multi-gigabytes of photos on this server and have seen zero failures or SMART issues running over a year.

Many disk failures occur due to the sata controller, so I highly recommend getting a decent controller, and proper cables. I recently upgraded the server with an LSI 9211-8I controller, which works out of the box for expanding sata ports.
