The slate gray Photo Hatchback 16L AW Backpack from Lowepro is an excellent choice for a day out in the field, walk along the boardwalk with the family or even a quick down and dirty gig. It's designed to hold your DSLR with an 18-55mm lens attached and two additional moderately sized lenses, flash, accessories as well as your iPad or tablet held safely within its own dedicated compartment. It is also designed to hold your GoPro Hero 3 camera, and accessories.

The "wow" feature of this bag is that it comes with a removable camera box which, when removed, turns the pack into a full-fledged, empty pack that can be used as a daypack. The camera box comes with a storm flap for protection and two handles for easy removal. Load it beforehand, place it in the pack, and you're off. And, on days when you don't need it, just lift it out and the pack is ready for clothes, books, food, jacket or groceries.

Access is via a top loading zippered opening or its very handy side "hatch" for rapid retrieval of your camera when the shot appears. All the zippers are YKK for added durability. The 2.0 lb pack is comfortable with its adjustable backpack straps. This is an outdoor pack that is prepared for all weather eventualities since it contains Lowepro's All-Weather cover that can be rapidly deployed when the weather turns against you. The Photo Hatchback is made from strong 600D polyester and 210D nylon ripstop polyurethane-a combination made for the outdoor enthusiast. It is backed by Lowepro's lifetime warranty.

I thought this was one of the more attractive bags I saw when browsing at a local big name brick and mortar store. In fact, I didn't know that I wanted a different camera bag than the one my camera came with until I saw this one. Of course, I thought I would get a better deal from B&H so I went home and checked it out. After a few days of looking at the Lowerpro site and B&H options, I went with this one. So far, I've only used it to go to the National Zoo. After spending several hours taking pictures, you can hardly tell anything is on your back. I also had for snacks, water and other things during the Zoo trip, very convenient. Its one of the most comfortable bags I've ever worn. The opening for the camera is against your back, which is one of the main reasons I chose this model. I think that's a great idea for security and I plan on doing a lot of photography in populated areas. Its kind of nondescript, in a way that its not like "Hey everybody, I have an expensive camera in this bag". The only reason I gave it 4 stars (its really a 4 1/2), is because my 70-300mm lens was too long to fit in the camera compartment. I'm not sure the larger size bag would solve this problem of mine, but I ended up putting it in the zippered section inside the top compartment. I usually don't use that lens a lot, so not that big of a deal, but needed it that day at the Zoo.

Besides being a very tight squeeze for even my mirrorless Sony Nex7 and secondary lenses, the build quality was entirely mediocre. It reminded me of my kid's LL Bean day packs for grade school - except that it cost more. It isn't terrible, but it isn't worth $[$], either.

    Best outdoor bag

    By Caleb Spann

Comments about Lowepro Photo Hatchback 16L AW Backpack (Slate Gray):

This bag has been awesome for me because I hike a lot and also take a lot of pictures. It can hold anything from my GoPro gear, to my 5D. The top pocket is massive and I can hold my jacket, and other things. The side water bottle holders hold my big Camelbak water bottle. If you're a photographer that hikes and loves the outdoors, this bag or the 22L would be the perfect choice

Comments about Lowepro Photo Hatchback 16L AW Backpack (Slate Gray):

This backpack is for small kits. I have a T2i and I can only fit a sigma 50-200 f4-5.6 (small lens) and a Sigma 17-50 f2.8 mounted on the body. There is only space for a few additional small items in the camera compartment like a battery. I put a speedlight in the top compartment and other odds in the front section.

Even though, it's small, it fits great and securely. I can and do wear it riding bike and it stays in place. It's also easy to access the back panel like the flipside if you leave the waist belt on and just slide the bag around.

If you carry minimal gear, this will work. If you have a pro body or large lenses, this just won't work. I like it though and for now, it works.

This pack is a perfect fit for my Olympus OM-D body and three lenses - plus everything else I need to carry for a full day's hike or long day cross-country skiing. The pack is very light and comfortable, holds two water bottles (or one water bottle and a small tripod), rain jacket, and lunch. There is even a pocket to hold a small tablet like my Nexus 7. The quality is excellent. At about 2 lbs. this is the perfect small pack for landscape or street photography.
