The galaxy blue Photo Hatchback 22L AW Backpack from Lowepro is an excellent choice for a day out in the field, walk along the boardwalk with the family or even a quick down and dirty gig. It's designed to hold your DSLR with an 18-105mm lens attached and two or three additional moderately sized lenses, flash, accessories as well as your iPad or tablet held safely within its own dedicated compartment.

The "wow" feature of this bag is that it comes with a removable camera box which, when removed, turns the pack into a full-fledged, empty pack that can be used as a daypack. The camera box comes with a storm flap for protection and two handles for easy removal. Load it beforehand, place it in the pack, and you're off. And, on days when you don't need it, just lift it out and the pack is ready for clothes, books, food, jacket or groceries.

Access is via a top loading zippered opening or its very handy side "hatch" for rapid retrieval of your camera when the shot appears. All the zippers are YKK for added durability. The 2.1 lb pack is comfortable with its adjustable backpack straps. This is an outdoor pack that is prepared for all weather eventualities since it contains Lowepro's All-Weather cover that can be rapidly deployed when the weather turns against you. The Photo Hatchback is made from strong 600D polyester and 210D nylon ripstop polyurethane-a combination made for the outdoor enthusiast. It is backed by Lowepro's lifetime warranty.

I've taken my new Hatchback 22L backpack for its maiden voyage (i.e. short trip from SFO to BOS). It has come through it with flying colors. I am a skinny 5'4" and the backpack did not look humongous on me. I got the gray one. I had a Nikon 800E with 24-70mm f2.8 lens, Nikon SB900 flash. battery charger with cord, 4 sets of 4xAA batteries for the flash in the camera section. The lens is a bit long, but it still fits. I had an ipad in the iPad section. I gad a Bose noise canceling head set, lens hood, camera accessories, scarf etc. at the top section. Bottled water and umbrella on the side. By the time i'm done it is about 13 pounds. I felt like everything was secure. And the backpack fit very nicely under the seat in front of me on JetBlue, with inches to spare. I did have to make use of the strap that you snap to keep the straps on. For me one strap would keep sliding off if I don't. Perhaps my shoulders are too narrow. With it on it was great. I feel a bit worried about the prominent Lowepro logo, but at least they made it kinda tie dye-ish look so it is not too prominent. The front iPad section was a little tight even for me. It is a tight squeeze getting the iPad or anything you have in this section in and out. I've also had to use the AW cover. I also used the AW cover once. Though it was not raining that hard when I was out with the backpack. But so nice to know it is there when I need it. Some minor cons:I have yet to figure out how to get my camera without setting the backpack down. :-)The carrying handle is flimsy and not comfortable for long term use.

I am a mom w/ 2 little ones and I purchased this bag b/c I need protection for my camera while being able to carry a couple diapers, some wipes & misc toddler necessities. This bag has the space, the camera protection & even a place for sippy cups but it was huge on my 5'3" average sized frame and I felt and looked really awkward. It was also pretty stiff. This would be a great purchase for a medium to large sized man. I am thinking about getting the next size down.

The size is perfect for a day trip it handles my camera gear and my many different types of clothing I need to have on hand depending on the natural area I am photographing. I compared this to a smaller size that was twice the price.

Comments about Photo Hatchback 22L AW Backpack (Galaxy Blue):

I bought this bad to take on family vacations, as my large backpack is too much to handle for traveling. Here are my thoughts...

I like to carry a lot of gear. This bag let me carry everything I needed to not only capture family moments, but also to capture some high-quality travel pics as well. It held a 7D with a 17-50 2.8 zoom attached, a 580exII flash, charger, extra battery, card wallet, and gopro in the camera section. In the top compartment I had a mefoto travel tripod, cable release, gopro accessories, a poncho, long sleeve shirt, and snacks. The side pockets held waterbottles.

The only thing I would like to see on this pack is a set o rings on the back to string bungee cord on to hold a jacket or sweater.

Other than that, I love this bag....alot. Very comfortable in the heat. It's size prevents it from getting too heavy. And the fact that the camera part comes out is a nice feature.

Purchased for hiking with camera gear and personal items (water, food and extra clothes).

The camera section is tight. I carry Canon 50D w/18-200 (very tight), extra lens, filters, batteries, etc. There are side pockets for two water bottle and plenty of room for a light jacket and food for the day.

It is comfortable and carries the weight well. It works well for scrambling over rough terrain. Serious short coming is poor air circulation against back. Nots so nice in the 80s and 90s.

I have been looking for a relatively small bag to use as a carry on in airplane, but also when being out on a casual photo hike. This bag is just great. You can fit a professional DSLR body (I have a D800 with a battery pack which is bigger than a D4 and it fits) and several lenses, a tablet, your books and what you need for the plane. The top compartment fits a rain jacket, a sandwich, etc if you're hiking. Plus it comes with a rain cover.
                  Really love that backpack.

problem. I have way too many bags but never seem to have the right one. Took this on a family trip for a week and loaded up my Fuji XE-1 gear with three lenses, cables, chargers and ipad. PERFECT!

Bag was light and intelligently laid out. Access was great to camera despite being on the inside. I had originally purchased the 16L and found that too small.

All in all, a great, light and usable travel bag. If you have loads of gear however, likely not a great choice.

I love how the camera gear is stored in the part of the bag that is against my back. I also have enough room to store my iPad, notebooks, and other gadgets I want to carry that aren't camera related. This bag is also extremely comfortable and I love the color!

It's not the most spacious backpack I've ever used, but it has enough space for everything I need. I typically only use two lens per shoot, so it gets the job done for me. It's not completely water-proof, but knowing that my gear is well insulated makes me feel a little bit better. Overall, a great pack if you use just a little gear.

Comments about Photo Hatchback 22L AW Backpack (Slate Gray):

This was my first real camera backpack and it is great. I use it all the time with everything from day trips to trips to another continent. The size is perfect, not too big, not too small. It fits my D3100 and four lenses (kit, 70-300mm, 50mm, and 35mm). There are two reasons that the rear compartment works great for me: 1. There are a lot of pick-pockets in big cities, especially internationally, so I never have to worry about my gear. 2. I can easily access all of the equipment because there's nothing under anything else. The rear compartment, though it may not seem like it, is very easy to get to. All I do is leave the waist straps on, slip off the shoulder straps, and spin the backpack around to the front of me. The waist straps keep it on and it's very easy to access everything. Another great feature of this backpack is that the camera compartment can be removed. I use this backpack all the time, but don't always bring my camera, so this feature has come in very helpful. It's built with great materials, has a great design, and overall I couldn't find anything disappointing about the backpack. It's a great purchase!

                                  Pro.
Good size camera bag for traveling with DSLR (with full frame body D 800 size and 24-70 plus a flash) or daily use without camera compartment.
                                  Light weight.
Nice look. (Just a bit alike college students style )

                                  Cons.
The padding holds the body temperature(hot). I think its just like regular foam. Can't do any hiking or travel with it in summer time.
Not able to carry 70-200 in camera compartment.
No tripod holder or strap. (Really don't know why they have two water bottle holders)

                                  Conclusion
Worth for this price at B&H. Fits for anyone who need a backpack to carry DSLR with a bit personal items.

I ordered this and well it says it doesn't fit a laptop correct but my gear really didn't fit in there either. I had a 70-300 lens and it can't just be put in straight up has to be lying down in the bag and that takes up more room making it a tight fit for a camera with a 18-55mm lens attached and the rest of cords and battery and such. Great bag if you have a small amount of gear not if you have a good amount of gear.
