The slate gray Photo Hatchback 22L AW Backpack from Lowepro is an excellent choice for a day out in the field, walk along the boardwalk with the family or even a quick down and dirty gig. It's designed to hold your DSLR with an 18-105mm lens attached and two or three additional moderately sized lenses, flash, accessories as well as your iPad or tablet held safely within its own dedicated compartment.

The "wow" feature of this bag is that it comes with a removable camera box which, when removed, turns the pack into a full-fledged, empty pack that can be used as a daypack. The camera box comes with a storm flap for protection and two handles for easy removal. Load it beforehand, place it in the pack, and you're off. And, on days when you don't need it, just lift it out and the pack is ready for clothes, books, food, jacket or groceries.

Access is via a top loading zippered opening or its very handy side "hatch" for rapid retrieval of your camera when the shot appears. All the zippers are YKK for added durability. The 2.1 lb pack is comfortable with its adjustable backpack straps. This is an outdoor pack that is prepared for all weather eventualities since it contains Lowepro's All-Weather cover that can be rapidly deployed when the weather turns against you. The Photo Hatchback is made from strong 600D polyester and 210D nylon ripstop polyurethane-a combination made for the outdoor enthusiast. It is backed by Lowepro's lifetime warranty.

First off, its a very nice looking backpack, and has a slim profile.

Its great for security since the only way to access the camera/lenses is through the hidden back compartment, and if you need to switch lenses constantly like me, you can snap on the waist strap and swing the backpack over to the front, open it up and switch lenses without having to put the bag down.

It works very well as your day-to-day bag also, just remove the camera department that's held in place by velcro, and now you have a full sized backpack that now can fit your 15.6" laptop, not just your tablet.

Lastly I'd like to point out the build quality, its great, doesn't feel cheap and is very weather resistant material, and in a worst case scenario you can pull out the rain cover from the bottom (which I've had to use all the time in rainy South Florida) or if I'm at the beach the cover makes it easier to clean the bag.

The only con I can really think of is that the material that rests on your back gets pretty warm, especially when you hike, other than that its great, I highly recommend it.

I am a mom w/ 2 little ones and I purchased this bag b/c I need protection for my camera while being able to carry a couple diapers, some wipes & misc toddler necessities. This bag has the space, the camera protection & even a place for sippy cups but it was huge on my 5'3" average sized frame and I felt and looked really awkward. It was also pretty stiff. This would be a great purchase for a medium to large sized man. I am thinking about getting the next size down.

Comments about Photo Hatchback 22L AW Backpack (Galaxy Blue):

When I decided that I needed a photo backpack for day hiking with a portion of my photo setup, I had a lot of trouble deciding on a backpack. I have had good success with Lowepro and ended up deciding on their backpacks. Most important criterion: As a must, the backpack needed to have a decent amount of room for non photo/computer gear, room for my D5M3 with 24-105 f/4L and a second lens (17-40 f/4L or the new Tamron 28-300), my 270EX flash, be able to store my 11.5" laptop with CF reader & mouse, an extra camera battery, a couple of extra CF cards, a couple of filters, a lens cloth, and a lens brush. Chargers for computer and camera battery could stay in the car or back at the hotel. Also, the backpack needed to be comfortable.Stretch Goals: -- Add a third lens about the size of 24-105 f/4L-- Store all three lenses vertically so I don't need to swap lenses back to put camera away.Decision:The choice was between the lighter & more versatile Photo Hatchback 22L, the Video Fastback 150, the Video Fastback 250, and the Fastback 250. Later 3 seemed to be geared more to protecting the photo gear while having a computer. I determined that the FB150 was probably too small; however the two FB250s would definitely have worked for me. I chose the Photo Hatchback 22L figuring that I could find a way to stash the laptop inside if necessary and I already knew that the camera with the 24-105 fit (since this system is in the pictures on B&H).Evaluation: The Photo Hatchback 22L worked out much better than I expected. -- The 11.5" laptop fits in the front pocket.-- After a while fiddling around with the dividers, I was able to get the 5DM3 with a 135 f/2L mounted, the 24-105 stored vertically, the 17-40 stored vertically, the flash, the mouse, and the two filters in the camera bay.-- The brush, two extra CF cards, and an extra battery were in one of the mesh pockets inside the top section. -- Other than the stuff mentioned above, the top pocket was empty. There was plenty of room for normal day hiking supplies.Other: A few other comments-- The usefulness of the front pocket was a major suprise. Although my laptop fits in the pocket, it is also decently well protected.-- My camera and most of my lenses are all pretty chunky. Getting what I wanted into the bag was very nice.-- As far as vertical storage of lenses, the 24-105 is 5.1" long with the two lens covers installed. It is slightly too long for the camera bay and protrudes a little. However, it is still well padded and not uncomfortable. The 135 f/2L is 5.3" long with lens covers. It sticks out enough that it is noticable when wearing the backpack. It can be done, but it is a little uncomfortable. Note that the 24-70 f/2.8L and the new 16-35 f/4L are about the same size as the 135. They'll be okay stored mounted or horizontal, but may be a bit uncomfortable if stored vertically.-- Oh, I didn't think to put the lens hoods in the bag. I think that two would fit in the camera bay but the third would have to go inside the top section.-- One thing that was a little suprising in a negative way. I assumed based on compartment size information from Lowepro that I would be able to fit my laptop in the top section. I could, but it was tighter than in the front compartment. A laptop any larger than mine (8.5x11.5x1) probably wouldn't fit.-- Should be fine for planes under the seat.-- I like the two side places for water bottles. The elastic keeps things snug. I wouldn't have problems putting filters, mouse, batteries, etc in them. They are pretty secure.-- Although I haven't tried yet, I am probably in the camp that thinks accessing the rear camera bay on the fly would be a pain. Fortunately, I this isn't an issue for me because of my usage habits.Overall:-- I really like the pack and am looking forward to using it for day hiking.-- Definitely does more than I expected.

I just came back from a one month trip to Alaska and British Columbia. I transported my camera gear around in this backpack everywhere, including hiking and touring. It is an outstanding pack, fits beautifully under the seat when flying, and is user friendly. I have lots of camera equipment and have traveled extensively and this is the best backpack I have ever owned. It is outstanding and comfortable.

I am taking the Photo Hatchback to Peru and it is the perfect bag to hold the gear i need (DSLR + 2 additional lenses + tripod) along with enough room for overnight essentials, Also love the color instead of the usual great or black. Definitely recommend this bag for other outdoor photographes who need to hike to that perfect spot!

Just a great backpack. If you don't travel with too much gear, it's perfect. Even so, we just went on a trip with 2 Nikon bodies(one with grip), a 18-140, a 12-24 and a 70-300... is was squeeze a little bit, but it fit! And the top loading compartment is great for caring extra stuff. Another great comment I have to make is how great the Lowepro customer service is. I have lost one of the waist strap. A week later, Purolator delivers an extra 2 straps, free of charge!! That's just a GREAT service!!

I use this for a Leica M9-P with 5 lenses and for the first time in a very long photographic career I'm pretty happy with a "bag" although I do wish to were larger since I tend to carry so many lenses and a second camera body. Two water bottle holders on the side and a pockets and sleeves up top hold the jacket, flashlight and a few other accessories for my rather long hikes. The chest strap is adjustable up and down so that you can position it for the pest position for comfort - a real plus! The one other minor aspect I don;t like is the rather large but blended LowePro logo on the back. I like anonymity!

I use this backpack for carrying my D610, multiple lenses including a 50mm and a 105mm. It has enough room for a flash or additional DX body or small lens as well. The safety box can be removed, turning it into a regular every day backpack as well. There is a large storage compartment up top for memory cards, batteries, filters or just a layer of clothing. Plus, the front compartment, advertised as optimal for an iPad can also fit a 13" Macbook too! Great pack, and I highly recommend it.

I was looking for an option with camera bag/good storage. it just fits my 60D with 24-70 lens attached, tight but fits. my 70-300 lens fits in next to it. not a lot more room in the camera section. but plenty of room on top which is what i was going after. this will be a good bag for me for getting from point A to point B, but I tend to carry smaller when walking around. at least until i get another lens.......

The size is perfect for a day trip it handles my camera gear and my many different types of clothing I need to have on hand depending on the natural area I am photographing. I compared this to a smaller size that was twice the price.

Comments about Photo Hatchback 22L AW Backpack (Galaxy Blue):

I bought this bad to take on family vacations, as my large backpack is too much to handle for traveling. Here are my thoughts...

I like to carry a lot of gear. This bag let me carry everything I needed to not only capture family moments, but also to capture some high-quality travel pics as well. It held a 7D with a 17-50 2.8 zoom attached, a 580exII flash, charger, extra battery, card wallet, and gopro in the camera section. In the top compartment I had a mefoto travel tripod, cable release, gopro accessories, a poncho, long sleeve shirt, and snacks. The side pockets held waterbottles.

The only thing I would like to see on this pack is a set o rings on the back to string bungee cord on to hold a jacket or sweater.

Other than that, I love this bag....alot. Very comfortable in the heat. It's size prevents it from getting too heavy. And the fact that the camera part comes out is a nice feature.

Great for long hikes! Comfortable to wear and easy to use. The only complaint is that there is not very much room for a tripod. I have a Vanguard Alta Pro 254 and it barely fit.

Purchased for hiking with camera gear and personal items (water, food and extra clothes).

The camera section is tight. I carry Canon 50D w/18-200 (very tight), extra lens, filters, batteries, etc. There are side pockets for two water bottle and plenty of room for a light jacket and food for the day.

It is comfortable and carries the weight well. It works well for scrambling over rough terrain. Serious short coming is poor air circulation against back. Nots so nice in the 80s and 90s.
