The pepper red Photo Hatchback 22L AW Backpack from Lowepro is an excellent choice for a day out in the field, walk along the boardwalk with the family or even a quick down and dirty gig. It's designed to hold your DSLR with an 18-105mm lens attached and two or three additional moderately sized lenses, flash, accessories as well as your iPad or tablet held safely within its own dedicated compartment.

The "wow" feature of this bag is that it comes with a removable camera box which, when removed, turns the pack into a full-fledged, empty pack that can be used as a daypack. The camera box comes with a storm flap for protection and two handles for easy removal. Load it beforehand, place it in the pack, and you're off. And, on days when you don't need it, just lift it out and the pack is ready for clothes, books, food, jacket or groceries.

Access is via a top loading zippered opening or its very handy side "hatch" for rapid retrieval of your camera when the shot appears. All the zippers are YKK for added durability. The 2.1 lb pack is comfortable with its adjustable backpack straps. This is an outdoor pack that is prepared for all weather eventualities since it contains Lowepro's All-Weather cover that can be rapidly deployed when the weather turns against you. The Photo Hatchback is made from strong 600D polyester and 210D nylon ripstop polyurethane-a combination made for the outdoor enthusiast. It is backed by Lowepro's lifetime warranty.

First off, its a very nice looking backpack, and has a slim profile.

Its great for security since the only way to access the camera/lenses is through the hidden back compartment, and if you need to switch lenses constantly like me, you can snap on the waist strap and swing the backpack over to the front, open it up and switch lenses without having to put the bag down.

It works very well as your day-to-day bag also, just remove the camera department that's held in place by velcro, and now you have a full sized backpack that now can fit your 15.6" laptop, not just your tablet.

Lastly I'd like to point out the build quality, its great, doesn't feel cheap and is very weather resistant material, and in a worst case scenario you can pull out the rain cover from the bottom (which I've had to use all the time in rainy South Florida) or if I'm at the beach the cover makes it easier to clean the bag.

The only con I can really think of is that the material that rests on your back gets pretty warm, especially when you hike, other than that its great, I highly recommend it.

I am a mom w/ 2 little ones and I purchased this bag b/c I need protection for my camera while being able to carry a couple diapers, some wipes & misc toddler necessities. This bag has the space, the camera protection & even a place for sippy cups but it was huge on my 5'3" average sized frame and I felt and looked really awkward. It was also pretty stiff. This would be a great purchase for a medium to large sized man. I am thinking about getting the next size down.

Survived extreme cold and being dropped

    By Spoons

    from Perth, Western Australia

Comments about Photo Hatchback 22L AW Backpack (Slate Gray):

We bought two of these bags for our gear for a trip to Lapland in January. The temperature dropped to about -40C on some days and the fabric of the front of the pack sounded very brittle and crunchy when touched but it didn't fail or break. Unlike some plastic bags we had which froze and then cracked and split in the cold!
We had a canon 60d with 10-22mm lens in one of the bags and it fitted nicely. A 400d with 70-210mm fitted in the other pack. Along with other bits and pieces.
The cameras are accessed from the inside so if you were in a crowded place, they would be quite secure. The ipad in its cover fitted in the front pocket. The top storage compartment held a surprising amount of stuff for when travelling on the plane including ticket wallet, kindle, wallet, phone, amenity kit, etc etc.
one pack was dropped in a slip disembarking from a train and fell to the track but the camera was fine, nicely padded.
At times the packs weighed 8-9kg but were still comfortable to wear as the weight is well balanced.

Great bag for camera since it keeps it safe and can carry all the equipment I need in it. Only downside is you can never have enough extra space for all those other things you'll want to carry around in your day bag.

Nice Travel Backpack with camera space. Able to hold my 6D+24-105, a lens similar size with 24-105, a pancake lens, a compact flash (EX-90) and accessories while leaving the top part space for clothes and food. Wish it could have access to the camera through side pocket like those slings. But it seems that backpack usually doesn't have that type of design. Over all, looks great!

Good Pack. B&H is Five Star!

        By HandDoc

        from Phoenix, AZ

Comments about Photo Hatchback 22L AW Backpack (Slate Gray):

Holds a small DSLR and two kit lenses (18-55 and 70-300 in my case) plus a few small accessories. It would probably hold a full frame DSLR with some reconfiguring of the camera compartment. There is plenty of room in the top compartment for other stuff. Being able to remove the photo compartment is a very nice option. Side pockets can hold liquids or even a concealable PDW. The straps are very comfortable and the LowePro logo is very discreet so you don't become a camera thief target.I am very happy with the pack.B&H's price was excellent. I chose expedited shipping and received the pack exactly day days after I ordered it.B&H has always been a reliable and cost effective source of quality imaging products and this latest transaction is no exception. I wish other on-line retailers were as competent and customer friendly.

          Great pack

          By Paul

          from New York City

Comments about Photo Hatchback 22L AW Backpack (Slate Gray):

I bought this spur of the moment to replace my old travel day pack which had served me well for many years, but was falling apart because I'm a bit tough on my equipment. I'm happy to say that this bag's 2 week maiden voyage went very well. The camera and supplies were well protected and easily accessed through the hatchback, although it can be a little awkward to unzip the hatch if you don't have something to lean on. I don't use the waist strap, but it looks like it might make it easier to flip the bag over if you do. The outer pouch in the front was perfect for slipping my iPad in and out quickly. The outer pouch is actually two pouches, so I used one to store papers. The soft divider also provided a bit of extra of cushioned protection for the iPad. Lastly, the shoulder straps are well padded for comfort and to alleviate sweat.

Comments about Photo Hatchback 22L AW Backpack (Slate Gray):

The backpack is much roomier than it seems. There's enough for my nikon d5200 with a 18-55mm kit lens attached and plenty of room for 3-4 more lens. I think a 200 or 300 mm lens would fit its already attached to your dslr. The top compartment has enough for all my cables, spare batteries, glasses case, a spare compact camera, and still lots of room to spare. The front compartment snugly fits my lg gpad 8.3 and the two side pockets hold my water bottle and travel manfrotto tripod easily. I've walked around with it all day and feel no discomfort.

Only thing I would say is that the top handle strap seems a little flimsy, but not the actual shoulder/back straps.

Fits my IPad no problem. Great day trip bag.

My favorite part about this bag is that is usable for more than carrying camera gear. Security is a big deal to me and this bag was well thought out with that in mind. The camera section is only accessible from the rear of the pack, the main compartment doesn't unzip the whole pack so gear can't fall out and the laptop compartment is tight-fitting making it harder to pull gear without someone not noticing. That being said this isn't a bag for someone who needs great organization or easy access to equipment. The Pepper Red Color is closer to orange incase you wanted a red bag.

I was looking for a bag that would adequately protect a Nikon DSLR, a second lens, GoPro, and tablet while still leaving room for accessories and daily necessities like a windbreaker lunch and water bottle. This bag is perfect. Camera protections and security are great although note that you have to take it off to access the padded compartments. To me that's an added plus since it increases security in crowds and I plan what I need in advance.

I purchased the smaller version of this backpack, the 16L, and have used it on the trail countless times. It is very functional, and has held up extremely well, which I'm not surprised considering it's made by Lowepro. In fact, I liked the smaller version so much that I decided to upgrade to the larger version for those times when I need a little extra space for extra gear. While there are a couple of things I would add or change, overall, I love my Lowepro Photo Hatchback!

Also top portion is large enough for book and travel items and my 11.6 inch laptop fits securely in front pocket. And when you take out the camera bag it really is a full service backpack. I looked all over and this one is perfect plus comfortable.

Comments about Photo Hatchback 22L AW Backpack (Galaxy Blue):

When I decided that I needed a photo backpack for day hiking with a portion of my photo setup, I had a lot of trouble deciding on a backpack. I have had good success with Lowepro and ended up deciding on their backpacks. Most important criterion: As a must, the backpack needed to have a decent amount of room for non photo/computer gear, room for my D5M3 with 24-105 f/4L and a second lens (17-40 f/4L or the new Tamron 28-300), my 270EX flash, be able to store my 11.5" laptop with CF reader & mouse, an extra camera battery, a couple of extra CF cards, a couple of filters, a lens cloth, and a lens brush. Chargers for computer and camera battery could stay in the car or back at the hotel. Also, the backpack needed to be comfortable.Stretch Goals: -- Add a third lens about the size of 24-105 f/4L-- Store all three lenses vertically so I don't need to swap lenses back to put camera away.Decision:The choice was between the lighter & more versatile Photo Hatchback 22L, the Video Fastback 150, the Video Fastback 250, and the Fastback 250. Later 3 seemed to be geared more to protecting the photo gear while having a computer. I determined that the FB150 was probably too small; however the two FB250s would definitely have worked for me. I chose the Photo Hatchback 22L figuring that I could find a way to stash the laptop inside if necessary and I already knew that the camera with the 24-105 fit (since this system is in the pictures on B&H).Evaluation: The Photo Hatchback 22L worked out much better than I expected. -- The 11.5" laptop fits in the front pocket.-- After a while fiddling around with the dividers, I was able to get the 5DM3 with a 135 f/2L mounted, the 24-105 stored vertically, the 17-40 stored vertically, the flash, the mouse, and the two filters in the camera bay.-- The brush, two extra CF cards, and an extra battery were in one of the mesh pockets inside the top section. -- Other than the stuff mentioned above, the top pocket was empty. There was plenty of room for normal day hiking supplies.Other: A few other comments-- The usefulness of the front pocket was a major suprise. Although my laptop fits in the pocket, it is also decently well protected.-- My camera and most of my lenses are all pretty chunky. Getting what I wanted into the bag was very nice.-- As far as vertical storage of lenses, the 24-105 is 5.1" long with the two lens covers installed. It is slightly too long for the camera bay and protrudes a little. However, it is still well padded and not uncomfortable. The 135 f/2L is 5.3" long with lens covers. It sticks out enough that it is noticable when wearing the backpack. It can be done, but it is a little uncomfortable. Note that the 24-70 f/2.8L and the new 16-35 f/4L are about the same size as the 135. They'll be okay stored mounted or horizontal, but may be a bit uncomfortable if stored vertically.-- Oh, I didn't think to put the lens hoods in the bag. I think that two would fit in the camera bay but the third would have to go inside the top section.-- One thing that was a little suprising in a negative way. I assumed based on compartment size information from Lowepro that I would be able to fit my laptop in the top section. I could, but it was tighter than in the front compartment. A laptop any larger than mine (8.5x11.5x1) probably wouldn't fit.-- Should be fine for planes under the seat.-- I like the two side places for water bottles. The elastic keeps things snug. I wouldn't have problems putting filters, mouse, batteries, etc in them. They are pretty secure.-- Although I haven't tried yet, I am probably in the camp that thinks accessing the rear camera bay on the fly would be a pain. Fortunately, I this isn't an issue for me because of my usage habits.Overall:-- I really like the pack and am looking forward to using it for day hiking.-- Definitely does more than I expected.

I like the fact that the bag can fit one big lens, the camera body and lens, and a flash. It is really helpful. Plus, you can put other things in thr upper section such as ipads and clothes maybe.
