Product Highlights
  • Zoom Wide Angle - Telephoto

The Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS EF USM Lens is a compact and lightweight standard zoom lens that offers superior optical performance, plus a built-in Image Stabilizer. The IS system reduces the possibility of blurred photographs caused by camera shake, which allows for handheld photography in comparatively dim light without a flash or tripod. At the wideangle end of the zoom range, the equivalent shutter speed gain is approximately 1.5 stops while at the telephoto end, it is approximately 2 stops.

In addition, the lens has a USM drive mechanism for faster and quieter AF operation, and the pulse control diaphragm (EMD) ensures precise aperture control.

Note! White Box merchandise comes supplied in a plain white box, instead of the manufacturer's colorful packaging. It is not a returned or refurbished item. It still includes all the manufacturer's accessories.

The IS system is composed of a pair of gyro sensors to detect vertical and horizontal motion and a microprocessor that compensates for it by shifting special lens elements in parallel with the perceived movement.
The internal focusing mechanism allows the front of the lens to remain stationary and to easily accommodate specialty filters, such as polarizing filters.

On a Canon T2i I had been using just the 50mm f/1.8 with reasonably good results, but was limited by the lack of a zoom. I am just the average dad taking pictures of my kids running around in daylight or at various activites in-doors at school events. They don't pose or stay still. I was looking for a light-weight all-purpose "inexpensive" lens useful both indoors and outdoors and for action.

As the pros will tell you such a lens does not exist or is unaffordable.

This Canon 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 lens has many of the features on my list and works pretty well as a walk-around lens. While it is a hefty 500g lens, with the T2i body it does not feel heavy when carried around walking all day. Zoom creep did not occur if I left the lens at 28mm when walking.

The lens appears well-constructed with a smooth movement of the zoom and quiet auto-focus. I purchased the refurbished lens from B&H for a price lower than that on Canon's website. It arrived in a Canon box with a 90-day warranty from Canon.

I previously had a Canon 18-55 mm lens on an Xti and had not taken many pictures at angles less then 30mm. The range of this lens is ideal for my needs. The image stabilization-IS while probably of a previous generation is a new and welcome addition for me. More shots at slower shutter speeds are usable. I can get decent pictures in good light outdoors and indoors and by using a flash with low light indoors. At low light however, I still prefer the 50 mm f/1.8 as I am not fond of using the flash.

I would recommend this lens for anyone looking for a general purpose lens.

i use this as a general purpose lens
in fact i own 2 of these
the range for this lens as an everyday work horse is near perfect but there are some caveats
compared to some other lenses this doesn't seem as sharp, the lens creep becomes an issue after a few weeks esp if you carry the rig by a neck strap (lens down).
the autofocus seems very fast and accurate not to mention quiet
the IS performs without a flaw as near as i can tell
    i haven't seen a chromatic issues either

1 last minor hiccup you will want a hood for this lens i have caught some nifty (nasty) flares

please canon do something about the lens wobble though i hate that i've sent it in twice for repairs.
the lens wobble is caused by the end element's internal seal wearing out, this may also introduce dust elements or other debris into the lens

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

This is a pretty nice lens. It's reasonable sharp, and resonably small and light. It didn't come with a hood, but it's no an "L" lens, so that's to be expected.

The deal breaker for me is the lens creep. My copy is unusable at any angle below 45 degrees. I'm looking to replace it.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

There's no comparable lens in Canon's lens arsenal, or any other Canon-compatible lens manufacturer, that has this focal range, so in that respect this lens is ideal and well priced. It's not an L-series lens, however, and suffers from some chromatic abberation and isn't all that sharp across the field. But it's focal range suits our needs for studio and on-location portrait work, so this is the third copy we've bought for our studio.

This lens is used as my every day lens.

BUT, it's starting to be a pain with the lens creeping. My 7d is carried on a harness with the EF 28-135 and extra battery grip. I just wish it would stay in a more compact position until I use it.

I recently purchased 6D DSLR and later realized that my existing lens won't work as it is for crop images. Immediately i order 28-135 Lens from BH Photo as i they committed i received Lens just in 12 Hours before my trip start to Smoky. I took picture using this lens it sharp as expected. Even i taken picture from Helicopter images are still same sharp as took from tripod. Image stabilizer helps lot. I would suggest this lens should be part of your group of lens. The only thing is missing is Lock on lens.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I like this lens. I don't really really like it, or love it, or dislike it, or hate it. I just sort of like it. It's nice and sturdy feeling, and has a great zoom range on my crop sensor which serves as a sweet mid-range telephoto (with the 1.6 crop factor I get a nice 45-205mm range).

It doesn't do great in low light but hey, how many zooms in this price range actually do? If you buy a lens that specifies it can't open up past 5.6 on the long end then you are made fully aware that it won't shine when the sun sets. I knew this going in, but I accepted it for the combination of price, zoom range, and the fact that I can use it on a full frame if need be. Lens creep is terrible, but for less than two bucks I got a pack of latex elastic hair bands and I slip one in the barrel crack and that takes care of that.

The really bad thing on this lens is how much dirt and dust it lets into the deep internals; you can look through the front of the lens and see the sandbox sitting there under the glass that you cannot access to clean.

It does its job ok, and image quality is an upgrade from the kit lenses but not by a huge longshot. I don't regret buying it but in retrospect wish I'd saved up another couple of hundreds for something a little better.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

This lens is pretty sharp, and give me some good results, sometimes even great results. Overall it's contrasty enough, and it's at least as bright as I would expect it to be for the maximum aperture.

It has terrible zoom creep. As a matter of fact, "creep" doesn't even begin to describe it. If you tilt the camera past about 55 to 60 degrees, the lens just falls immediately to maximum zoom. And with a very loud "thunk." I don't use the camera in the studio, so I'm not walking away from it and expecting it to hold the zoom, and when I pick it up I can immediately zoom it back to where I want, but it's at best mildly annoying.

On close ups my 17m lens does great shots but this lens is a good over all lens with the exception that if you want to photograph family, you need to stand away at least 10ft. Not realy an issue. I have L lenses that have way better photo results, but when it comes to in general photos (general landscape, gatherings, enclosed auditoriums) this lens does a very good job.

This came in the kit with my most recent camera purchase and is a great walkabout lens. It's a versatile lens with quick auto focus and the IS makes it worth while. Has some cropping issue at 28, but to be expected. Overall, a good value for the price point.
