The Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS EF USM Lens is a compact and lightweight standard zoom lens that offers superior optical performance, plus a built-in Image Stabilizer. The IS system reduces the possibility of blurred photographs caused by camera shake, which allows for handheld photography in comparatively dim light without a flash or tripod. At the wideangle end of the zoom range, the equivalent shutter speed gain is approximately 1.5 stops while at the telephoto end, it is approximately 2 stops.

In addition, the lens has a USM drive mechanism for faster and quieter AF operation, and the pulse control diaphragm (EMD) ensures precise aperture control.

Note: White Box merchandise comes supplied in a plain white box, instead of the manufacturer's colorful packaging. It is not a returned or refurbished item. It still includes all the manufacturer's accessories.

The IS system is composed of a pair of gyro sensors to detect vertical and horizontal motion and a microprocessor that compensates for it by shifting special lens elements in parallel with the perceived movement.
The internal focusing mechanism allows the front of the lens to remain stationary and to easily accommodate specialty filters, such as polarizing filters.

On a Canon T2i I had been using just the 50mm f/1.8 with reasonably good results, but was limited by the lack of a zoom. I am just the average dad taking pictures of my kids running around in daylight or at various activites in-doors at school events. They don't pose or stay still. I was looking for a light-weight all-purpose "inexpensive" lens useful both indoors and outdoors and for action.

As the pros will tell you such a lens does not exist or is unaffordable.

This Canon 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 lens has many of the features on my list and works pretty well as a walk-around lens. While it is a hefty 500g lens, with the T2i body it does not feel heavy when carried around walking all day. Zoom creep did not occur if I left the lens at 28mm when walking.

The lens appears well-constructed with a smooth movement of the zoom and quiet auto-focus. I purchased the refurbished lens from B&H for a price lower than that on Canon's website. It arrived in a Canon box with a 90-day warranty from Canon.

I previously had a Canon 18-55 mm lens on an Xti and had not taken many pictures at angles less then 30mm. The range of this lens is ideal for my needs. The image stabilization-IS while probably of a previous generation is a new and welcome addition for me. More shots at slower shutter speeds are usable. I can get decent pictures in good light outdoors and indoors and by using a flash with low light indoors. At low light however, I still prefer the 50 mm f/1.8 as I am not fond of using the flash.

I would recommend this lens for anyone looking for a general purpose lens.

I like this lens. I don't really really like it, or love it, or dislike it, or hate it. I just sort of like it. It's nice and sturdy feeling, and has a great zoom range on my crop sensor which serves as a sweet mid-range telephoto (with the 1.6 crop factor I get a nice 45-205mm range).

It doesn't do great in low light but hey, how many zooms in this price range actually do? If you buy a lens that specifies it can't open up past 5.6 on the long end then you are made fully aware that it won't shine when the sun sets. I knew this going in, but I accepted it for the combination of price, zoom range, and the fact that I can use it on a full frame if need be. Lens creep is terrible, but for less than two bucks I got a pack of latex elastic hair bands and I slip one in the barrel crack and that takes care of that.

The really bad thing on this lens is how much dirt and dust it lets into the deep internals; you can look through the front of the lens and see the sandbox sitting there under the glass that you cannot access to clean.

It does its job ok, and image quality is an upgrade from the kit lenses but not by a huge longshot. I don't regret buying it but in retrospect wish I'd saved up another couple of hundreds for something a little better.

I knew it from the reviews but... pretty significant lens creep out of the box. Reasonable sharpness for the price. Just needed an inexpensive walk around lens and a lens I can take on the river without the worry of ruining the "L" lens. It will work but come on Canon, get the creep out!

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I just purchased this lense a month ago. Took it on a photo shoot and the pics turned out great but cause I like to keep my camera on a tri pod while walking the lense would creep all the way out while pointed downwards. I've exchanged this lense 3 times now with the same problem. If it wasn't for the lense creep I would love this lens for every day use.

If you are in budget and looking for daily use lens, this is the best EF lens you can find.

Very good affordable lens.No need to buy expensive 24-105 f4L if you use it on a full frame sensor for daily use.
This lens gives good contrast, saturation. The sharpness is also higly satisfaying.
Its focusing speed is fast even with crop sensor machine.
Only 2 problems i have found;the zoom side creeps when the camera's face down.
2nd problem is when recording the video you should switch off IS mode in order to prevent lens focusing noises.

The reviews on this lens were not good 2 years ago as was the case with the 18 -135 also.It think it is asking to much of a lens to expect much in performance with such a wide range of barrel lengths. ( Nikon does better in this area ) I finally bought the Canon 7D pro-series crop & this lens was available as a kit for an additional $.The 7D is an outstanding camera & Canon should be ashamed of themselves for incl. this general purpose lens as part of the pkg.The lens creep, right out of the box is a manufacturing flaw & it never should have left the assy. line. ( I fixed it with a rubber band... )After 180 files & 7 months of use I have come to the conclusion that the lens has a serious case of chromatic distortion in over 60% of the files I have kept. I shoot only in RAW & do all my own post work. I have a camera bag full of lenses that have never given me these troubles. In my opinion this might be a " general purpose " lens for the individual that perhaps shoots only in JPEG & isn't looking for absolute clarity of detail in their work. Luckily, I only wasted a $ bucks & an additional $ bucks on a lens hood, CP lens cap, soft case & a UV filter... I knew better based on the numerous neg. reviews on this lens & only have myself to blame... :~( Bill Farr

I do mainly sports with long Canon zooms. I needed an inexpensive walk around lens that was smaller, lighter and would't knock things down in tight places.

It's not quite a good as the more expensive Canon mid zooms, but does a great job for the price.

I use this lens, as an amateur (if even that), instead of the 18-55 kit lens that came with my beginner Rebel T3. The lens creep is a given due to its weight, but the problem is easily solved with a thin rubber band. It is typical Canon quality. There are plenty of informative reviews online by professionals who aren't impressed with this lens, but I am proud to own it. The B&H price at the time is what led to me making the purchase. It was significantly lower in price at B&H.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I really like this lens. I use it almost daily for a huge variety of shoots. From close up nature photography to portraits I do it all with this lens. I would love to 'love' this lens. However, it is quite heavy and through use the lens creep is atrocious. I would not even call it lens creep, more like lens drop. If you point the camera down the lens literally drops and zooms all the way. This can be quite annoying and the only way I found to fix this was to keep a small piece of tape on the outside to use in case it is needed. Other than that, it's a great everyday lens that I use all the time.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

The lens doesn't seem to do well in low light. When the lens is pointed down, it has insuffient friction to maintain the zoom. So if you point it down, it zooms out fully. I find this highly irritating. In good light, it performs well throughout its length. I've had limited experience with the macro function, but it seems to do well.

I remember using this lens back in the film days. It worked well, but now with digital I like the images more. I am using it on a Canon 6D and since it is full frame, it is very particular about the quality of the lens. Edges and vignetting are not too bad depending on how you use it. I also looked at the 24-70mm f4L and the quality compared is close in the center. I don't think it would be worth spending an extra $ - for my situation.
