I bought this adapter when I purchased my new MacBookPro Retina from B&H. It is essential for attaching older, non-Thunderbolt drives to the computer. My only complaint is that I did not buy two. The computer has two Thunderbolt ports, and it is always wise to have a spare when travelling.

IF like me you travel and bought a Thunderbolt drive on the road and have thousands of images you'd like to download off the Thunderbolt drive this will not work. This device is a oneway only cable to go from a firewire device to the thunderbolt not vice versa. The real name of this cable should be Firewire to Thunderbolt.

I am using my Thnderbolt adapator to connect an audio interface to my computer via a firewire 800-to-firewire 400 cable. I didn't specifically need Thunderbolt, just another port. It works with no problems. I also tried connecting an external drive with the adaptor and same cable, but this setup will not provide bus power to the drive. So, I cannot use this adaptor to power any firewire drive. Overall, it does what it's supposed to do.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have a mobile studio using Mac computers. The new Mac's have eliminated FireWire and almost made me abandon the brand, but found a blog site that gave me a solution. This adapter will still allow me to use my go to firewire equipment. Thunderbolt is awesome on paper but a lot of users new need to use equipment now and can't wait for manufacturers to catch up with thunderbolt connections.

Ok I needed to transfer video from my old Hi8 Camcorder to my Mac. I had no idea how to do it. But the B&H tech did. The Apple Thunderbolt Adaptor and Pearson Firewire cord. was recommended. Zap. My problem solved. Worked like a charm.
