    Solid keyboard with Nice Features

Comments about M-Audio Axiom A.I.R. 61 - Keyboard and Pad Controller:

Where to begin? This keyboard is being used for two purposes, so I will review from each perspective.

The first perspective is from my wife with her purpose of playing classical music. This keyboard allows responsive play with good resistance. The semi-weighted keys are not nearly as good as hammer action, but it allows for fast play without the keys feeling too light or cheap. The Ignite software is easy to use if you want to jump right in and play.
Her only complaint is that there is no sheet music holder built in to the keyboard.

The second perspective is from myself with the purpose of creating music through this MIDI controller. The keyboard was easy to set up with just a device driver install followed by a firmware update. Ableton Live (not included) was able to recognize the device, and I was ready to create music. I enjoy the plethera of sliders, knobs, trigger pads, and assignable buttons. Each is illuminated to show which are active with your current setup.
My complaint is that the pads feel too stiff. Maybe they will become easier with enough use. For now, I use the corners which are easier to press.

Overall, this is a solid keyboard with many nice features. I am very happy with this purchase.

Comments about M-Audio Axiom A.I.R. 61 - Keyboard and Pad Controller:

I bought the A.I.R 61 to replace an older Yamaha 61key keyboard for my DAW (Propellerhead Reason)

            Having a smaller M-Audio Oxygen8V2 I thought I couldn't go wrong with M-Audio's new Top range keyboard.
It's not that it is a bad keyboard, but it has some extremely bad features that should not have made it on to this keyboard (Rotary's). (There is hope that firmware upgrades could improve this, but M-Audio is dragging its feet on this).

I haven't used it with Ignite (included DAW), but from what I've heard everything works fine.

However, most people already have there own DAW & this is where the problems begin.

The biggest issue is the lack of Hypercontrol support of different DAWs meaning you might be using the keyboard in a simple GM Midi mode until M-Audio add futher support (if & when?).

The second major issue with this keyboard is the 'Rotary encoders'.
They are completely useless in almost all DAW's other than there own.

To explain, say to set one of your rotary's to volume (0-127), when you turn the 'rotary' slowly the volume may change from 0-16, if you turn it faster the rotary will suddenly jump to 127. There is simply no consistency to its behaviour.
I can only hope that this can be fixed with firmware?

Apart from those two major problems, the rest of the keyboard functions as your would expect.
The pads are ok, nothing special but function ok.

I was having some issues with the Pads(no releasing)& also a bug with the keyboard randomly freezing.
However, M-Audio did just release V1.2 firmware which addresses those issues.

So far the freezing has gone (but I haven't tested extensively).
The Pads also seem somewhat better in that they no longer hang on a sample (as much).

The only really good thing I can say about the Axiom A.I.R 61 is that the feeling of the keys are very nice.
Certainly one of the best feeling keys I've ever felt.
It is enjoyable to play & really helps capture your playing style.
