The Velbon UT 43D II 6-Section Aluminum Travel Tripod with Ball Head features a remarkable ratio of maximum height (5.1') to folded length (11.3"), making it an excellent choice for backpackers and other travelers who need a lightweight & compact yet highly functional camera support.

That ratio is a result of several factors: the two-section center column, the six sections of the aluminum legs, the fact that each leg section disappears completely inside the one above, and the 180° folding of the legs, by which the feet line up perfectly with the top of the included QHD-43D ball head. Together the head and the UT 43D II tripod weigh just 2.53 lb.

Own it for 3 months, one rubber where you twist to extend the leg keep spinning. That leg is dead, you can not extend/open it.Also specs said it can handle 6.6 Lbs. Its a lie. My camera is 3 Lbs and I can not use the ball head vertically.Manfrotto rated at 4 Lbs hold stronger than that.

Comments about Velbon UT 43D II 6-Section Aluminum Travel Tripod with Ball Head:

Purchased to use with a Lumix P&S, but strong enough to hold DSLR with all purpose zoom (18~250). A little complex to open & tolerances on leg sections very tight, so take time & care. Supplied quick release plate too big for P&S (see first photo), so replaced supplied head with a smaller ball (2nd photo) which shortened stored length about 1/2 inch. The QR is excellent on a DSLR. 4 stars because no tripod is perfect.

Comments about Velbon UT 43D II 6-Section Aluminum Travel Tripod with Ball Head:

Riding on my motorcycle I see a lot of beautiful scenery that has to photographed. This tripod is the BEST for my travels with my DSLR. Its compact size makes it easy to store in my sidebags. Its so lightweight and extends so high, its incredible. I laugh everytime I grab it before my five other (famous name brand) tripods, knowing this one takes up so little room. Its very easy to open/close. I wonder why the bigger name brands didn't think of this concept before. On the semi-down side: This is a great first tripod/ball head for beginners. I would liked to have saved some $$$ if it was offered w/out the ball head since I am devoted to another brand's Quick Release system for all my gear. No problem though, I just took off the ballhead that came with this tripod and replaced it. And in case you're wondering, "No", that wouldn't stop me from buying this tripod again.

Comments about Velbon UT 43D II 6-Section Aluminum Travel Tripod with Ball Head:

Have yet to take it on a photo shoot, but have opened it up and checked it out, shown it to other photographers. The entire thing with the head weighs only 2.6 lbs, which is great for a tripod that reaches 61" in height. It is a little tricky to extend and then retract the legs - I need to practice that. The head seems to operate very smoothly and easily. One of the photographers that I showed this to is buying one for himself! Great for traveling, lightweight and even the BAG is simple nylon, very light and not bulky. One other slight negative - I had to add a couple D rings to the bag handle so I could add a shoulder strap to it for easy carry-along when traveling around with just my camera in a sling.

Comments about Velbon UT 43D II 6-Section Aluminum Travel Tripod with Ball Head:

I used to be a pro photographer. For travelling, I need the most compact, light and decent height. Product seems sturdier than Oben AC-1410. Oben leg lock mechanism broke off within one week.
This Velbon is pretty easy and fast to open and close. I was skeptical about twist lock, but this one I feel comfortable using it with D800, SB910 and 70-200/F2.8.
I just use it once so far. I do not know how reliable it is. FYI, I have other Velbon for more than 20 years still doing great, it is just too big to travel.

Comments about Velbon UT 43D II 6-Section Aluminum Travel Tripod with Ball Head:

I wanted a light weight small tripod I could easily fit in my backback that would support my D7100 and a 16-85. This tripod is very light and packs very small. It is lighter than some carbon tripods that are smaller and more expensive. I was worried that it won't be stable because it is only rated for a load of 6.6lb, however I found this tripod to be pretty stable. Really it checks all the boxes for me, packs very small, light weight, stable, the legs can quickly be extended/collapsed, true quick release plate on head.
I was warned that the leg locking system relies on plastic pieces that are prone to breaking so I'll have to be a little careful with this. It does have a 5 year warranty so that is a little reassuring.
Another complaint I have is the quick release plate extends past the camera body. This may not seem important but it means that it will be digging into my stomach while it hangs around my neck. So I won't be leaving the plate on the camera at all times. Not a big deal just a minor annoyance. Also I feel they could have designed the head a little better and lighter.
Overall I'm really happy I found this and would recommend it as top in the light weight tripod category.

Comments about Velbon UT 43D II 6-Section Aluminum Travel Tripod with Ball Head:

I haven't gotten heavy use out of it yet, but after a road trip with a few sessions involving quick setup and tear down, and this dropped into the top pocket of a Kata 3N1-35 PL, I was sold on it.

As was another photographer there, who bought one on the spot after seeing it work.

I wanted something that I could carry in my photo backpack. This tripod is very compact, and it's quick to set up. The only drawback is that it's a bit heavy, I expect to feel the difference after walking around all day with it.
