The BC-166 Ball Head from Oben is a durable aluminum ball head that features an Arca-type compatible quick-release system. It has a large locking knob with a tension control screw to give you maximum control of the ball, and a separate knob for the 360° panning movement.

The BC-166's multiple knobs enable higher-precision adjustments to the head than are possible with single-lever heads. Taking panoramic photos is simple, for instance, because you can pan a specific number of degrees while keeping the head's tilt position locked. In fact, the BC-166 features degree markings around its circumference to aid in that task. A notch in the ball head allows you to quickly change between portrait and landscape orientation.

The included quick-release plate attaches to your camera via its standard 1/4"-20 screw, and is secured in place with an Arca-type clamp. A locking knob controls the opening and closing of the aluminum clamp simply and reliably. Two safety screws on the bottom of the plate help prevent your camera from accidentally being released when adjusting the plate fore and aft. One bubble level on the clamp, and another on the locking knob, both ensure that your camera will be level with the horizon.

I Dont know much about Ballheads. I bought this one as it was the best looking deal. I use it with a 500 f/4 and smaller and it functions great. I plan to add a wimberley sidekick to it soon. All in all its great.

Comments about Oben BC-166 Ball Head:

I got this ball head as part of a kit. Unlike the legs, this ball head did not disappoint me. My only complaint is it is a bit on the heavy side. Mike P. complained that the tension knob teeth would hurt his hand after 15-30 minutes. I can see why he felt that way. I started to get this feeling too until I realised that I did not have to tighten the knob to the extreme to get my camera in a still position. After than, it was all good. That said, I have not used this ball head extensively yet.

Comments about Oben BC-166 Ball Head:

This product is overall great, except for the tension knob. It is really solid. Everything moves really smoothly and the knobs turn fine. The only problem is that the tension knob is all metal with teeth. After just about 15-30 minutes of using it, my hand was so raw and sore that I didn't want to touch it anymore. If Oben updates this model with a rubber tension knob or some other way that my skin isn't being rub down to bone, it would be great.

Comments about Oben BC-166 Ball Head:

I bought this to replace the original pan & tilt head on my Slid tripod. It's very easy to adjust the camera now with only one knob. I can also swap it between my tripod and monopod depending on my needs. The only downside is the Allen screw that connects the mounting plate to the camera. I would prefer something that doesn't need a tool.

Comments about Oben BC-166 Ball Head:

The capacity of this head is greater that I currently need. I figured that purchasing this head is like a man purchasing a new pair of pants as he enters middle age. You get 1 size bigger because you will grow into them shortly. The manufacture of the head is flawless. I am very particular about fit and finish and was unable to find any flaws in this example. Surprise / Surprise it actually came with instructions and they made sense. The operation of the knobs is smooth and require the right amount of effort to turn them. The ball moves smoothly and does not hang up in any position. The quick release operates smoothly. I definitely give it 5 stars and would purchase another Oben product based on my experience. Yes I would recommend it to a friend.  I also want to compliment  the B&H team. I have purchased several items from B&H and they arrived with in 2 days time. The description on the web site is very good and have been exactly as described. The logistical team does a fantastic job of getting the orders packed and out the door. I will continue purchasing product from B&H.

Comments about Oben BC-166 Ball Head:

This ball head is rated for 66 lbs. I may not have equipment that weighs 66 lbs yet, but in the years to come with the traveling I plan on, I will in the future. With the weight range it covers it is surprisingly light at 1.9 lbs. The Oben-166 is sturdy! And it is a breeze to use. I highly recommend this ball head.
