Literally plug it in and go. I did install the TrendNet Powerline utility and upgraded one of the units firmware to the latest version. They have been used by my kids to stream Netflix, Hulu Plus etc for the last couple weeks and no issues noted. I am getting consistently between 135-160Mbps transfer. I do know that nothing stutters when streaming and so far we have 3 rooms using these devices (I bought 2 sets), even when we are all streaming at the same time. We also use them for our security camera's and they work well for that also.

I've used powerline ethernet adapters before (ie Airlink's), with which I've had NO problems. In their simplest, default usage, you should be able to plug them in, connect an ethernet on both sides, and voila - connectivity.

I can't count the number of reset/retry cycles I've tried on these two units to get them to connect to each other and communicate successfully! To make matters even more confusing, All the lights (3) on each adapter were always constantly in green or blinking green mode - which according to the manual indicated success in ethernet and powerline connections.

Additionally, the included utility never consistently showed both devices, even in the presence of both device's idiot lights being green. This just added to the debugging dilemma.

So when I finally reduced everything back to a simple scenario (1 cheapie 6-plug power connector - all plugs in simple wired series, with both adapters plugged in), I was able to get the units to see and communicate with each other. (25 second reset on both.)

Great I thought. Everything is at least "set". Unplugged them, moved them into the desired position, reconnected ethernet cables, and ... no connectivity. Back to the 25-second reset on both units. They'll work for a day or two, then revert to failure requiring another reset cycle. Seriously?

Ah you think; this is just some newbie or consumeridiot. Perhaps, but I am also a networking professional of 30 years, and this product is an exercise in frustration.

      Good luck!

Comments about Trendnet TPL-406E2K 500Mbps Compact Powerline AV Adapter Kit:

I have used the TRENDNet TPL-406E-2K Powerline Adapters for several different scenarios and they have worked flawlessly in each case.In the first case, a lady I know wanted to be able to stream Netflix to her television in the living room and the DSL Internet connection with the router was on the second floor, the construction of the house made it difficult to run a Cat 5 cable from the router to the room with the television. The TPL-406E Powerline adapters have worked flawlessly to enable the Netflix streaming now for over a year and there have been no difficulties with them.In the second case, I upgraded the DSL connection I had been using to be a Fiber link and the ONT (Optical Network Terminator) installed by the phone company was located far from where the router is located, running Cat 5 would be difficult, but not impossible, again the TPL-406E adapters have worked flawlessly between the Cat 5 connection of the ONT and the WAN (Wide Area Network) port on the router. For both of these applications the TRENDNet Powerline Utility software was used to change the names and passwords used by the TPL-406E adapters to be strong and unique to help ensure their security. In the case of my fiber setup, the two TPL406E adapters are each located on different phases (legs) of the 240 volt power drop to the building and they work without any difficulty, I have tested and have gotten upwards of 400 mbps between them which is well in excess of the fiber speed, so there is no problem. The only thing I did was to purchase a spare set of TPL-406E adapters for a backup to ensure that if something happened I will be protected.Naturally every scenario is different but in my case they have worked as hoped for and I do not hesitate to recommend the TRENDNet TPL-406E-2K Powerline adapters.

Hige improvement over my wireless network in the house. Worked great to wire up my office and living room from the router. But when I tried it in the bedroom, at night I noticed a little high pitched noise coming from the device. It's not loud, but I found it annoying, so I unplugged it in the bedroom at night.

Comments about Trendnet TPL-406E2K 500Mbps Compact Powerline AV Adapter Kit:

I am using this adapter to connect a network media streamer that lacks Wi-Fi. It works very well once it is set up correctly, with no throughput issues or dropped connections.

I had not realized how finicky the setup is. You cannot plug anything into the other open outlet on either side of the connection. A multiple outlet adapter or surge protector is also out of the question. As a result, the short Ethernet cables that come in the box may not be enough. I had to get a 15-ft cable from a local hardware store.

I am deducting a point for the skimpy manual. It only has a few basic diagrams and does not make it clear how to avoid the initial problems that I had to deal with.

75 feet pushes WiFi to an extreme and greatly degrades performance, and I'm too lazy to pull 75 feet of Ethernet cable. Also, this Trendnet kit costs less than that much cable or a WiFi extender. Truly plug and play, the software just gives a little extra control over configuration options and isn't necessary for normal use. I'm completely satisfied with quality, installtion, and performance. Great value for the price.

My desktop computer is at the far end of the house and even after attempting to move the router, it didn't help with the signal and would get slow 1-2MBPS speeds.

The setup of this product is simple. Tested the speed and now I get about 30+MBPS speeds for download. This is a major improvement and worth every penny.

Great product that works right out of the box. Simple plug and play.

Speed is noticeably faster than Wiki connection.

I gave only 4 stars as the units stopped working once and required the adapters to be removed and plugged back into the outlets.

I tried the powerline approach after a wireless bridge just wouldn't work. I needed to get the 'net to my Samsung Smart TV and was getting a constant "network interference" error. (I'm sure this was the tv's fault and not the bridge.) So I tried this adaptor, and everything works great. It's super-fast with no dropouts. It was so easy to set up, I thought for sure something was wrong--just plug it in and go!!

Comments about Trendnet TPL-406E2K 500Mbps Compact Powerline AV Adapter Kit:

As other reviewers noted about this and other Powerline Ethernet adaptors, the type and location of the outlet is critical to success. That written, after connecting this it performed well. My computer's info showed it was sending data at the rate advertised. The only slowdown was of the Internet connection itself, but other than that it's a good alternative to hardwiring Cat5/6 cable to various points. Just make sure to read and understand the instructions--especially about creating a new password should this be in an area with multiple parties on the same electrical circuit or feed.

                              - It must be on the same circuit breaker for the best performance.

Of course, time will tell, which is all too true when it comes to powerline networking: I've found the technology is more vulnerable than most. (Don't freak out. Firewire is more prone to burn outs than USB but it still rocks.)
However, the new generation of fast powerline networking is the fastest yet, and this model is the most compact, and has feature-parity with the competition. Be careful timing that button push when pairing the units!
