The X-E1 Digital Camera with XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS Lens Kit (Silver) from Fujifilm is the latest Fujifilm mirrorless camera and comes bundled with Fuji's first X-mount zoom lens. With a classic design, magnesium alloy build and completely state-of-the-art digital technology, the XE-1 will soon be a favorite among all levels of photographers.
The sensor on the X-E1 is Fujiflm's 16.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS sensor and the image processor is the EXR Processor Pro. The DSLR-sized X-Trans utilizes a unique color filter pixel array that eliminates a low pass filter and reduces moiré and false colors, resulting in exceptionally true-to-life color images, low noise and high resolution that other sensors with optical low-pass filters cannot approach. The EXR processor delivers high-performance, especially in terms of auto-focus speeds.
Fuji has created a unique lens mount for the X-series cameras. With a 10-pin data bus the lens instantly sends information to the camera body through the lens mount, meaning fewer adjustments to be made by the photographer and more time spent shooting. The reinforced mount is only 2.5mm thick, which contributes to the slim profile of the X-E1. The short flange and wide opening of the X-mount means that the lens elements are as close as possible to the sensor and will achieve high resolution even at the edges and corners of the sensor.
An incredibly high resolution 2.36 million dot OLED electronic viewfinder with a built-in diopter is provided for eye-level composition and a 2.8" 460K dot rear LCD monitor for composition and playback is available as well. The EVF has a double aspheric lens element that offers faithful reproduction of focus, exposure, white balance and film simulation effects and has a high contrast ratio of 1:5000. The LCD monitor has a special anti-reflective coating which reduces glare when viewing in bright sunlight and is water and stain resistant.
Thanks to improved contrast detection, the X-E1, coupled with an XF lens, can autofocus in as fast as 0.1 seconds and continuous high-speed shooting of up to 6 frames per second will allow you to capture fast-moving subjects whether they be newsworthy or simply to send to grandma. To guarantee that you never miss the action, QuickStart Mode provides a camera start-up time as short as 0.5 seconds.
Speaking of grandma, she will love the movies you can create with the X-E1's video capability. Shoot with Full HD 1080p and record in stereo sound for videos that can be screened on HDTV or right on the LCD monitor. A jack for an external microphone is also provided to record professional grade sound.
As always, image quality is at the heart of Fujifilm's mission and to that, the X-E1 provides both JPG and RAW file shooting with in-camera RAW processing, TTL 256 Zones exposure control and ISO capabilities that range from 100-25,600. And Fujifilm, respecting their own legacy, offers something no other digital camera maker does -- Film Simulation Modes. You can set your X-E1 to produce images that simulate the tone and color qualities of the great Fuji films, like Velvia or PROVIA. If for example, you want rich saturated colors, choose Velvia and if you want silky textures and beautiful skin tones, set your camera to ASTIA.
The classic design of the X-E1 is not just a matter of nostalgia. The manual aperture ring, the exposure and shutter speed dials and electronic viewfinder prioritize photography, provide for quick operation and return us to an era when the camera was king.
This X-E1 kit comes with an XF-18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS lens which is Fuji's first zoom lens made specifically for their X-series cameras. The 35mm equivalency of this lens is 27.4-83.8mm, which provides a great zoom range from true wide-angle to standard telephoto and will cover all your day-to-day shooting needs. The lens is fast with a maximum aperture range of f/2.8-4 and provides 4-step optical image stabilization to reduce the effect of camera shake. Three aspherical elements reduce aberrations and provide for true light transmission and sharp imaging across the entire sensor. The linear motor in the new XF 18-55mm lens coupled with the high-speed read out of the X-Trans CMOS sensor and EXR Processor bring with it a huge improvement in auto-focus speed and precision. Focus can be achieved in as little as 0.1 seconds!

From a film-era published photographer. Now shooting travel, family and street photography as hobby.
Simply put, is capable of outstanding images in a small, quiet package. Full control over in-camera JPEG, and comes with excellent, if different, (Silkypics) RAW software perfectly matched to the camera characteristics.
ISO 1600 is completely usable, hardly different from ISO 200. Well though out dynamic range and exposure control implementation. 3200 and 6400 for smaller images, good noise control, but it is grainy by 6400.
Excellent build quality for its price with great ease of handing. Favorably reviewed Q-menu makes on the fly setup changes easy.
Warning to the unprepared, as this seems to be the principle complaint about the camera: Those who expect the camera to just point, and shoot in- focus without learning how to use the focus options are going to be very disappointed - and give the camera a low rating because of their un-met expectations.
APS-C sensor has a shallow depth of field compared to small sensor, point and shot cameras, so what seemed never fail focus before was just a lot of depth of field that made focus seem instant and "automatic". On the other hand, some other camera do focus a bit faster, especially any camera having phase detect type focus. This is contrast detect - accurate to the very eye lash in comparison.
I will leave it at that. If you know how to shoot, it will shoot. It is not a camera for the inexperienced photographer. In the right hands it is a stunning instrument. I am very pleased with this purchase as my only camera.

I love the styling of the X-E1, but the unit that I got would only focus about 60% of the time. It had nothing to do with "learning the camera", it just would not focus, whether on a tripod or hand-held, with the 35mm or the 18-55mm. When it did focus, especially with the 35mm f/1.4, the images were tack sharp and gorgeous. The JPEG quality is superb, which is great since there seems to be issues with the RAF format and LR. I know several people who have them and they all love them. I think I just got a lemon, so back it went. I'm not sure if I'll get another or go up to the XPro1 and hope it doesn't suffer from the same AF issues.

Comments about X-E1 Digital Camera Kit with XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS Lens (Black):
I am encouraged with this little camera. It feels so comfortable having normal controls right on the lens and camera body again. The Exposure compensation dial is so very useful. I use it in conjunction with the nice bright EVF. I see my adjustments in real time. It has taken me about 30 minutes to get into the groove with this camera. I stopped shooting film in 1999 and have been feeling my way blindly through menus and manuals and never feeling that I was getting very far. This thing is simple and very familiar. The 18-55mm lens is quite a little beauty. I shoot wide open if it is not too bright out and I love the light that it puts down on the sensor. Film Simulation bracketing gets you in tune with the possibilities of the mood you can create. I have upgraded my firmware for the body and the lens and seen a big increase in the auto focus speed and accuracy. This is an all around decent little machine for real photographers.

Compared to my other SLRs the controls are much easier to avoid accidental changes. That is a great thing. This is not a sports camera, this is a camera for the composed shot and it beats everything else I have. Fuji simple gets the color, that is what they do. There is a minimum of thrills and extra freatures that I would never use anyway. I feel this adds more quality to the equipment as you are getting better gear for the dollar that something loaded with featers like Color Swap and other useless chioces. The camera handles manual modes like the real deal and the viewfinder is comfortable to work with.

Comments about X-E1 Digital Camera Kit with XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS Lens (Black):
Surely is a great looking camera and light. I was excited to get it based on all the reviews. I was a photographer back in the day and had loved my film camera Canon F-1 with all the lenses and attachments which still sits in my closet waiting for me to use again.
I purchased the XE-1 in all black and got the included 18-55 lens in the kit. Thought about getting the 35 mm instead since it received great reviews but the kit discounted the zoom lens and would not discount the 35mm.
So my first few outings were not easy which was surprising given my background in photography. At this point I really did not read through all the features and options in the manual so going it alone pretty much which I thought i could handle. The ability to adjust ISO adds a new component to taking a picture. As the reviews have stated I found the AF a bit slow, but not really a problem. The biggest complaint I have is the exposure dial which sits on the upper right just behind the on off switch. After taking pictures I would then realize that I had moved the exposure dial inadvertently. I kept doing it. I guess I have to learn to hold the camera differently which is a pain. Also the dioptric dial that adjusts for different eye settings also changed as I guess i inadvertently moved that dial. I have tried getting out of Auto exposure and tried using the aperture priority while adjusting the iSO. My results so far have not been good, many out of focus shots and under and over exposed results which at this point I am assuming is just me getting used to using the manual settings. Hopefully I will have some more positive things to say as I get used to using the camera more. Bottom line, if you are a novice this is not the camera for you. Excited to receive the leather half case I ordered that looks great and gives access to battery and SD card without removing the case. Stay tuned.

I use this camera for landscape, nature and portrait photography. The minimalist size and functions carry me back to my days of rangefinder cameras and I love the ease of use of this camera.
The only thing I've had any trouble with is getting used to the EVF and how it shows my subjects. Once I got over my initial confusion, it is awesome to use.

I have owned DSLRs most of my life (since 1978), and all of them Nikons, startring with the Nikkormat FTn, then the D100, D300, D300s, & D700, and all Nikon lenses (55mm Micro, 24-100mm, 18-35mm, 14-24mm, 70-200 AF-S VR, 200-400 f/4 AF-S VR) and a sputtering of Vivita lenses in the early days. As I have gotten older, the expense and the weight have exhausted me. There were no mirrorless systems (and I include in this the Leica) that fared well in price performance to the Nikons, IMHO. From a pure photography point of view, there is now no reason why there should still be reflex-lens cameras as the Fuji X-E1 (and its predecessor, the X-Pro) ably demonstrates. The electronic eye-level eye-level viewfinder will only improve with time and be perfected in its performance. Admittedly, I have bought the one of the 1st generation electronic ELVs but it works great. The optics of the 18-55mm is sharp. All I am waiting for now is a full-frame 24x36 sendor from Fuji and complementary lenses and I will be set, as I have been with my Nikons. I forsee a replacement of all my Nikon lenses in the next three years. The new 55-200mm Fujinon lense is already looking to take over my 70-200mm. In terms of weight, what a delight to cary the Fuji camera in all my travels.

I bought this as a travel camera in lieu of my heavy DSLR and lenses (Nikon D700/D700, 17-35mm, 14-24mm, 70-200mm, etc). It is sharp and performing beyond my expectations. Of course, I've only had it for two days and will therefore update this review in about a month. Forget the reviews that can't tolerate variable aperture. It's not important if most of the shooting you do is in 'Auto' mode.

I picked this camera as an alternative for my DLSR system where I can't carry my pro bodies/lenses. this small camera easily beats any APS-C DSLR in terms of image quality. The JPEG files are are crisp without halo artifacts, they look like RAW output from a DSLR. It is the best compact camera system if you don't need fast AF or plan to shoot moving subjects which is not possible with any mirror-less system anyway.
The kit lens is sharp, fast and has great build quality. no cheap plastic parts.

The X-E1 is a lot of fun to use. It reminds me a lot of my old Contax G2 film camera. It's definitely not an SLR, and I won't be selling my SLRs any time soon. The "kit" zoom is a very nice lens, it feels very solid and precise. The OIS works well. As with most of the mirrorless cameras, the battery life is short. I can get about 300 shots from a full charge. Compared to a Pentax K-5 or Nikon D-7000 that is less than half, but then the camera weighs a lot less. It's a trade-off.

I use this camera to take elevated shots of residential and commercial exteriors. It lives on the end of a painters pole, suspended in the air 8 - 10 ft above my head.
For me, one of the big advantages of this camera aside from it's size and weight is the ability to remotely trigger a series of bracketed exposures using a third party RF wireless shutter release. This feature alone is enough to justify my purchase.
I had been using a Sony NEX-7 for this application but it only supports an IR remote which is not practical in this application. With the NEX-7 I had to use the timed release and even then it wouldn't trigger a series of bracketed exposures.
Aside from this primary application I am very happy with this camera. The image quality is quite good. The controls are intuitive and easy to use. I find the viewfinder to be much better than the NEX-7 ( I wear glasses and the NEX-7 is just not glasses friendly, nor are the dipoter settings.)
The build quality is excellent and the kit lens (18-55) is sharp and bright. I just got the 14mm f2.8 but can't comment on it at this time.
I had read a lot about the X-1 Pro and was headed in that direction, mostly because of the optical viewfinder but decided to try the X-E1 since the specs are very similar. I have not ben disappointed.
If you have experience with a DSLR ( I shoot with a D-800) and are comfortable with the controls available with those cameras you should find the X-E1 controls to be intuitive and familiar.

Purchased the Fuji XE1 with 18-55 f2.8 and 35 f1.4 to complement my Nex-6. I was looking for a camera that took great photos and had plenty of manual controls. The x-trans sensor produces amazing clean images up to iso3200. In fact I would not hesitate going up to iso6400. Couple with my f2.8 zoom and f1.4 prime lens this camera is fantastic in low light. Lots of manual controls all quick setting changes, ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed and quickly changeable with dials or function button. I never had an issue with focusing speed as reported on earlier Fuji models with old firmware. It isn't the fastest focus but it isn't slow either. Wouldn't use this camera for sports or kids running around. Now for the negatives....I don't like the Fuji colors. The default images are very flat. I shoot with more color saturation to try to get more pop out of my shots. Olympus EM5 and Sony Nex6 have far better color. The color and saturation can be adjusted to your liking in-camera or in post production. Also, the video quality is pretty bad, but since I use my Sony for video it's not really an issue for me. I plan ion keeping my Fuji lenses because they are very good and eventually upgrade the body and newer models come out. Sorry for some bad grammar but my iPad isn't allowing me to correct my sentences. I guess I'll type my next review on a PC.

I read all the reviews, so I knew the quirks/shortcomings of the camera before I bought it, and there are a few. However...the files are very nice, the camera is small and easy to carry with me and the 18-55 zoom lens is nice quality and very handy.
Some of the reviews talk about more plastic than the X-Pro 1. Who cares? If you want all metal and extreme ruggedness, get a D3X or something like that. This is not a camera that you are likely to be banging around like a pro dslr.
When the 27mm pancake and 56mm f1.4 Fuji X's come out this year, my D700/24-70/80-200 "boat anchor" may be gone.
The low light capability of the X-E1 is great. Fast auto focus is NOT it's forte. In "S" mode. it's fine. In "C" mode, not so much. If that is an issue, then you need something else.
The image files are what sell this thing though. They are VERY nice.
