The Impact SF-ABRL160 Stand Mount Flash with LED Modeling Light is a lightweight monolight with straightforward features that make it ideal for most applications. The 160 watt second strobe features a bright LED modeling lamp that, unlike its quartz counterparts, is virtually maintenance-free. And instead of lasting 100 hours, the LED typically lasts approximately 25,000 hours.

The SF-ABRL160 has a built-in optical slave for wireless triggering, a sync cord for direct firing from your camera, a built-in umbrella receptacle, and a 5/8" standard stand mount. It accepts Impact's 50 x 50 cm (FF-SB50) and 50 x 70 cm (FF-SB70) Softboxes without a speed ring thanks to the head's built-in flex rod holes. An easy-to-mount barndoor set with filters, filter frame, and a honeycomb grid (SF-BDK) are available as optional accessories, as is a snoot (SF-SNT) with its own removable grid. Selectable flash output is full and 1/2 power.

I just bought three of these Impact SF-ABRL-160 strobe heads along with three lightboxes (extra). I must say I am very satisfied with the quality, and I'm impressed with the light's performance verses value.

The LED modeling lights are a soft white dream. There is practically no heat except for the brief moment when the strobe fires (just like any standard camera flash). So there is no need for heat shielded electronics, cooling fans, heavy over-sized ventilated housings nor is there a need for expensive high-heat resistant lightbox fabrics.

Yes, these lights are kind of small at 160 watt seconds(ws), but I use three of these strobes for my table-top macro studio. So combined they produce 480ws of light potential and this is pretty much major overkill for my 2ft x 2ft macro shooting stage.

Though the flash heads are not variable beyond ½ and full power, I can combine my three neutral density filters on my lens to shoot at different f-stops. My ND1, ND2 & ND3 filters can be combined to produce up to a six f-stop variance per power setting. I shot Color Chart samples for each ND filter combination and created Lightroom User Presets to correct for any color or contrast variance.

I wish the light head came with a standard reflector, but heck I'd just toss it aside anyway for lightboxes or umbrellas. So that isn't too much of a concern for me.

I also wish the built in speed ring rotated freely. However, using an articulated umbrella bracket for my lightstand makes for a good workaround by rotating the whole light head left or right as needed.

I also wish the power cord was a bit more robust, but it functions perfectly fine and it is long enough for boom arm use.

I think it is a perfect little popper. The SF-ABRL160 is inexpensive, generates little to no heat, pretty study, light weight, very portable and delivers plenty of oomph for my applications.

I am so impressed, I'm thinking about buying one more flash head along with both the Snoot and Barndoor attachments.

A great little light that fits a specific need for me- small & lite, more powerfull than a speedlight with led modeling light that won't run down battery power ( I use a vagabond2). The fail with this unit is that it has no available reflectors, so the 160ws is spread out over 160 degrees. If they made an efficient reflector it would be much more valuable to me. But for the price it is a great little light.

Comments about Impact SF-ABRL160 Stand Mount Flash with LED Modeling Light:

I bought these for a product photography setup. The studio was intended for a small office with white walls & ceilings and to photograph products (shirts, etc.) so it didn't need to be powerful.

As another reviewer mentioned, there are no reflectors available for this unit, which is a shame as you can't focus the power. A parabolic umbrella would help with this, but those would be more expensive than the light itself.

I set it up on two light stands about 6 feet off the ground aimed up into two white umbrellas on either side of the small studio. These bounce light off of the white ceilings/walls etc. to provide a nice soft light on the subject (a shirt lying on a white piece of plastic on the floor).

With this setup, I'm getting f/5.0 at ISO 80 with them both on the lower power setting (it only has two power settings, I and II). Which is pretty good, considering light is bouncing everywhere. Switching to the higher power setting probably adds a stop or so of light - around f/8 but I haven't tested it.

The modeling light is so weak as to be fairly useless, except if the room is pitch dark. They run cool and they go off consistently upon detecting a flash - when the larger studio lights 40 feet away went off, these also went off (and these lights could trigger those as well).

I'd say it's probably about as powerful as a hotshoe flash, but without the zoom fresnel lens to focus the power in any given direction (so the same as a hotshoe flash with a stofen). The main advantage to this over getting a couple of 285HVs is that you don't have to worry about batteries & they recharge quickly, so if you only do product photography indoors, they're just about perfect.

You can probably stretch these into doing model shots as well - on power level II you should be able to get approx f/5 with a couple of these through softboxes or bright silver reflective umbrellas.

These would not be able to replace the more powerful lights in my main studio, but they're perfect for product photography and could be stretched to shoot models in a pinch if used close up, but not to light up a whole scene (or maybe they could with a bright silver umbrella to aim the light).

Someone mentioned this not being powerful enough to use as a hairlight - I bet if you got the grid snoot and painted the inside silver you'd get plenty of power out of this for a hairlight.

These are small and lightweight. Unfortunately they come with no sort of cover to protect the bulb, so there's no way to travel with them apart from keeping the original box. The light is recessed so you could probably figure out a way to travel safely with them, but I really think these are intended for a small product photography studio (which is why there isn't even a reflector available for it).

Wintry weather forcing me indoors motivated me to play with macro photography. Ordered the flash with stand and softbox. First flash was defective but could not have been more pleased with B&H exchange procedure which was efficient in spite of the holidays and terrible weather. Replacement unit is working well and providing me with lots of photo options on a budget. Especially like that the unit does not get hot.

Comments about Impact SF-ABRL160 Stand Mount Flash with LED Modeling Light:

I brought this with the intention of using it as a hair light and backdrop light. It just doesn't fire hard enough to do that job. I contemplated sending it back but found a specific use that I wouldn't send back for anything else. I learned this is the perfect fit for bodyscape photography. The models loved the fact that it doesn't get hot. The light output is very crisp and clean, being led. It will give a blue hue unless you color/white balance correctly. Since I'm using it for b/w, I couldn't care less about that.

          from Arizona

Comments about Impact SF-ABRL160 Stand Mount Flash with LED Modeling Light:

With a Guide number of 35 and an f/stop flash variability of only 1 stop, this is a good beginner light. It's best used as either a softbox light or a rim light. It can also be used to illuminate backgrounds. I have bought 4 of them and they're nice to have because they're extremely portable for transport, but beware that the flash tube is not changeable. Given that, once your flash tube goes out, you will probably throw this away.

Even with all those disadvantages, I would buy this again because it's nice to have for a price that is below one hundred dollars.
