Ivory II American Concert D from Synthology is a virtual instrument that features samples of a vintage 1951 New York Steinway Concert Grand Piano. The instrument features a greatly expanded sound set and is fully integrated with the Ivory II piano DSP engine that delivers Harmonic Resonance Modeling for true Sympathetic String Vibration.

The piano was originally chosen by the Steinway & Sons concert department for use in Steinway artist promotion. Throughout the years, the instrument has been lauded by some of the world's greatest concert artists with the plate of the piano signed by Glenn Gould, Rudolf Serkin, and many others.

With a 49 GB library, Ivory II American Concert D possesses a naturally long sustain, which is captured in its entirety to the final decay, some of the notes ringing longer than two minutes. Also included are up to twenty velocity levels, with soft pedal and release samples capturing the full detail of the instrument.

Harmonic Resonance Modeling realizes true Sympathetic String Resonance, a technology that does not rely upon triggering additional samples or use ordinary sine waves. Rather, notes struck that are harmonically related excite the actual complex overtones of the notes that are being held, in the same manner that un-damped strings resonate in a real acoustic piano.

Ivory II American Concert D is a free-standing virtual instrument. No previous version of Ivory is required. Existing Ivory II owners will find that it installs easily into their current library.

Note! iLok is required if one is not already on the user's system.

Comments about Synthogy Ivory II American Concert D - Virtual Instrument:

I have the Ivory II American Concert D installed as a plugin on Pro Tools at home. The expressiveness is unbelievable - hard notes ring out with all the high frequencies, soft notes sound more muted - when listening to my recorded notes it is hard to believe this is not a real grand piano. The sustain pedal works great without the whole thing getting muddy. There are enough settings to get any style sound I need. The only disappointment would be the sympathetic resonance effect - I'm not really hearing this when I have the sustain pedal down - but it's still a phenomenal purchase.

Comments about Synthogy Ivory II American Concert D - Virtual Instrument:

This is my first Ivory instrument, and I am very impressed with the architecture and execution of the application. Lots of careful detail, and lots of control over subtle tonal parameters, making it possible to adapt the sampled instrument to the requirements of the music and your playing technique. Having said that, it really has taken a lot of time to get the "piano" sounding good and responding well. Expect to spend some time working the parameters and experimenting with velocity curves-- it isn't just wow out of the box. Also worth mentioning: You need a strong, modern computer with lots of RAM and a fast hard drive. I added a solid state drive on the Thunderbolt buss exclusively for this instrument, and my iMac is i7 with 16 GB RAM. It totally rocks, no glitches or stuttering, beautifully responsive, at least with the stand-alone application. We'll see what happens in Logic, when the computer has lots more to keep track of.

Comments about Synthogy Ivory II American Concert D - Virtual Instrument:

Pros: This virtual piano is best I've every played. The sound is warm, deep, and rich. The subtlety of the instrument is wonderful to play.Cons: The iLok authorization is the worst. Besides having to lay down [$] for a piece of useless hardware - to protect the company's product - it doesn't work. Besides that, make sure you have a hefty system with lots of speed and RAM to handle it.I didn't mind spending half the afternoon installing the piano, that's understandable as its huge - 49 GB of piano samples on 7 DVDs.But when I carefully followed the instructions to authorize the iLok, I got an error concerning Active X. I called the dealer for help, the rep said that he had the same problem with iLok and could only get it to work by RE-INSTALLING WINDOWS!I spent a good deal of time Googling this issue and trying various fixes - no help. Finally I found a user who said he had a fix: he installed an old version of Firefox - version 3.6 ( 10 years old?) and connected to the company through that browser. I found and installed the version, connected through the browser and sure enough, it worked. It's unacceptable that users should be put through these hoops so Synthogy can protect their software. It's no wonder people get pirated versions.Five stars for the great work Synthogy has done recording and sampling this beautiful piano. Minus five stars for the iLok.
