The Sekonic Litemaster Pro L-478D Light Meter is an incident and flash meter featuring a color touch screen interface. The touch screen-based navigation lends itself to a highly intuitive and efficient workflow, allowing you to quickly modify exposure settings and navigate menus. This meter is also highly versatile and capable of measuring flash, incident and reflected light for still, HD video, or cine applications.

The L-478D can be customized or adapted to your own specifications; depending on the metering modes you use most often, you can hide certain modes to create a more streamlined menu system. Exposure constants include shutter speed, f/-number, ISO, shutter angle, and frame rate; and the exposure variable can be decided upon depending on the situation you are working in. Illuminance and luminance values can also be taken, which are measured in footcandles/lux or candela per square meter/foot-lamberts, respectively. For more fine-tuned results, you can create and input personal profiles, allowing the meter to display exposure settings in accordance with your specific camera's dynamic range and clipping points.

Other settings available include the ability to memorize up to 10 different exposure readings in order to refer back for comparative overall measurements. The AVE/EV setting allows you to make one master exposure reading and have subsequent readings displayed as differential values based on the master exposure value. When working with flash metering, the flash exposure values can be expressed as a percentage of the flash-to-ambient light, giving you the ability to more easily alter and previsualize lighting ratios. Filter compensation and exposure compensation settings can also be applied in order to remove the necessity to apply different filter factors after a meter reading has been taken.

Color Touch Screen Interface and Design
  • The touch screen provides a more intuitive style of navigation and allows you to simply touch the settings you wish to adjust. Menu navigation is intuitive and the handling of various configurations becomes an expedited process.
  • Simple visual layout provides a clear view of your exposure setting and permits customization in regard to the information you wish to be displayed (including a choice of analog exposure scales (EV or f/-stops); 1, 1/2, or 1/3 step increments; the inclusion of 1/10 stops; and the option to hide metering modes you do not use frequently).
  • One physical menu button provides access to a more in-depth menu system that is then navigated through the touch screen. This menu allows for you to program exposure profiles and modify custom settings for your meter.
  • Measure and memory buttons are located on the side of the device for recording and initiating exposure readings. A PC sync terminal is located on the bottom of the device for direct, corded flash metering. A USB terminal is located on the side and provides a connection point to your computer for firmware updates and for loading exposure profiles to your meter. The attached light receptor features a retractable Lumisphere that can be rotated 90° clockwise or 180° counter-clockwise. It is also removable in order to facilitate the use of optional attachments.
  • Versatility Between Metering Methods
  • Ability to measure incident or flash light and display exposure readings as f/-numbers, shutter speeds, or ISO settings for use with still imaging, HD video, and cine uses. Exposure constants also include frame rate and shutter angle for a variety of motion uses.
  • Also capable of measuring illuminance as footcandles/lux or luminance as candela per square meter/foot-lamberts.
  • Flash metering can display the percentage of flash-to-ambient light within the scene for precise lighting ratios.
  • Comparative metering can be accomplished by using the AVE/EV function; allowing you to set a standard reading and have subsequent readings shown as the difference in exposure value.
  • Cinematic modes offer creative options for setting frame rates between 1 to 1000fps or shutter angles from 1° to 358°.
  • Filter compensation mode enables you to directly apply the effects of filters to your exposure reading. Up to four different filter factors can be applied at once, and up to 30 different filter factors can be stored for use (24 common filters are pre-programmed, including CTB, CTO, ND, +/- green, and 85 amber filters).
  • Custom Profiling
  • You can enable and disable different metering modes from showing up in menus, allowing you to configure the meter to your own personal workflow.
  • Calibration and custom profiling can be accomplished in accordance to your own personal camera by executing a series of exposure tests, processing the tests through Sekonic's Data Transfer Software (included), and outputting the results as a personal profile for use with your meter. These personal profiles confine your meter to work within your specific camera's dynamic range (up to 10 distinct profiles can be saved). Profiles can also be modified or created directly through the meter.

I purchased the L-478D for a movie I was shooting to replace my older Minolta meter. I was shooting digitally with two cameras and wanted a meter that was designed to read specifically for HD. The meter worked better than I could have expected. I don't trust monitors as my sole tool for lighting and relied on my meter to give me exact light readings and levels. Even when the image looked right on the monitors I trusted my meter and set my stop according to my readings. Now that the footage has been seen, I am so happy that I trusted my meter and that I chose the L-478D. The menus are pretty easy to navigate and after a couple of hours of playing with it I was very comfortable using it on set. The display isn't quite as nice as it looks in all of the pictures, which is my only real complaint, but that aside I am extremely happy with it's performance and capabilities.

Comments about Sekonic Litemaster Pro L-478D Light Meter:

This is the goods. The touch screen is a bit different than that you find on a tablet but certainly works well. This has the DTS software that allows you to set up individual cameras with the color checker passport. I do wish there was not such a premium on the spot meter attachment, seems way overpriced to me.

I just started using this on my shoots and it's everything I wanted. It's easy to use and read, I love the touch screen! It's just a bit too large for my liking since I have smaller hands, but it doesn't bother me that much.
Another pro is that another photographer I know also go one dropped it on cement the other day and the fall didn't hurt it at all.

I preferr to have complete control of my photo and this meter is prefect. I bought the spot attachment which is a must for complete control of all ligthing conditions. Most of my work is with portraits but I also do pets and group shots. This gives me maximiun flexibility with total control. I love it.

Comments about Sekonic Litemaster Pro L-478D Light Meter:

This is a very good product. It's relatively easy to use, and appears to be completely accurate.

Something to note if you are considering the purchase: all of the shots of the screen that I saw before the purchase (on the product page) were "simulated." Meaning, the actual clean, cool look that you see in the product shots are NOT the same as in real life. If you are expecting the smoothness of a retina display (that you see in the product shots) you will be disappointed.

Also, I'm trained to expect quick touchscreen responsiveness with a light touch. This doesn't work on this screen. At first I thought my screen was malfunctioning, but it wasn't - you just need to use a deliberate, strong touch with the touchscreen and it works fine.

Finally, be careful when working with the lumisphere - push the wrong button and the whole thing will pop off and drop. This is easy to avoid if you are aware of it and just use it right. :)

I'm pleased with it, however and it is a great, needed addition to both my photographic and videographic needs.

Comments about Sekonic Litemaster Pro L-478D Light Meter:

I will start out by saying I am far from an expert on light meters and the reason I chose this one was the manufacture seemed to be well regarded in the photography community and it was "middle of the road" as far as price is concerned. I am very happy with this purchase as this meter was very easy for me to learn and even though I am only using a small portion of its functionality it is the portion I care about :-) I wanted to be able to set my lighting up quickly using manual flash heads and be able to get all my settings as close as possible before the model appeared. Once the model showed up (my one year old granddaughter) I was able to get exceptional portraits in a very short time and thats a good thing given the my models attention span. The touch screen is a little wonky with my medium size fingers so I use an iPad stylus.

Comments about Sekonic Litemaster Pro L-478D Light Meter:

Small, lightweight, and accurate. Everything you could want in a light meter. My only complaint is that I wish the spot meter was built in, but I guess they made it a separate accessory to keep the price down (so no big deal there). Also, it was a little weird that they don't have the option of switching the shutter speed to 1/48, it only rounds up to 1/50. This can be fixed in the software though, so hopefully Sekonic will release new firmware with this feature.

If you need a light meter, grab this guy. You won't find a better one with this price.

I found that the ambient metering did not match the flash. I had to set the comp to +.2 to get a proper reading for my camera. In flash mode the meter reading made it 1/3 stop over exposed. when you compared the readings given for the color picker chart. Minor but it would be nice to set correct comp for ambient then go to flash and set a comp. for it separately

I agree with earlier reviews that the spot metering attachment should be included for the price. I also need to figure out how to calibrate it to my camera, because all the meter readings are over exposed for my 6D. At the current moment I'm really on the fence as to the need for this purchase.

The meter this one replaced was very old, maybe 25 years old so this new technology is very impressive. Having a business for 31 years gives you quite a bit of knowledge of things that are helpful to your business as this new meter is one of them. Easy to read and operate.
