Comments about OWC / Other World Computing Mercury On-The-Go Pro Triple Interface Portable Case:

I have purchased several of these cases as I've upgraded internal drives in laptops. Purchased this case at the same time as Crucial M550 1 TB SSD from B&H. Case is excellent, and easy to install drives. Case is bus powered, either with Firewire or USB. Excellent quality product, comes with USB and Firewire cables as well as soft case. Nice compact design.

While there are less expensive cases that are USB only, it was worth it to me to pay more to use Firewire since I cloned the internal HD to the SSD before swapping the drives and Firewire makes it faster. Having a good quality external case for my old HD allows me to maintain this as an external bootable drive "just in case".

Comments about OWC / Other World Computing Mercury On-The-Go Pro Triple Interface Portable Case:

Using the enclosure for external drive on MacBook Pro 13" unibody. Wanted the Firewire 800 speed for an external bootable drive.
Found it best to follow instructions of NOT screwing the hard drive down to the heat sink(even though there were enough screws in the package to do so). As it turned out two of the drives I was using were bad so it was easy to just open the end-cap and slide the I/O board with hard drive out to replace then slide it back in. The two end-caps (one permanent the other has screws to hold it in place) hold parts inside fairly well with a 2.5" 5400 rpm SATA hard drive.
This case is not intended to be water-proof, shock-proof or dust-proof etc. Just an enclosure for an external hard drive best used laying flat and still.
Happy with the fact that package includes USB 2 to USB 3 cable as well as Firewire 800 cable. device is capable of daisy-chaining Fireire 800 devices since it has two ports.
Included is a "pleather" carrying case.
Has a tiny on-off switch. Case is see-through clear plastic with reasonably thick construction. The blue LED when turned on is a good visual cue not to shake or move the enclosure as the hard-drive is on and spinning.
Careful not to tighten side screws to hold the end-cap in place is they may strip or crack the plastic piece.

Comments about OWC / Other World Computing Mercury On-The-Go Pro Triple Interface Portable Case:

Good product, does its job as advertised. Slightly pricey in my opinion. Then again it is a pretty versatile enclosure and this interface layout isn't very popular (but responds best to my needs).
Firewire 800 is the fastest port on my old Macbook and 2 ports on the enclosure allow me to daisychain multiple drives. USB 3.0 for universal connectivity and keeping up with higher transfer rates.

I'm satisfied with the interface board: Good transfer speeds and nothing fried as of yet after 6 months of frequent use (scratch disks for video editing and data dump disks on film sets). I purchased a SquareTrade Protection Plan for each enclosure just in case though.

The enclosure accepts both slim (9.5mm high) or tall (12.5mm) 2.5" drives. It'll seem quite large in relation to regular slim drives, which I use. The thick plastic casing and the heatsink add in some weight as well. Not an issue for me.

Good ruggedness for transport and outdoor use, however not entirely sealed and not dust-proof.

I purchased the optional power supplies in case the bus power is insufficient for Firewire daisychaining. Turned out the computer handled 3 chained drives flawlessly by itself (All 9.5mm drives on Macbook Pro 17").

Odd note: The printed installation manual specifies NOT to screw the drive directly to the heatsink but only the controller board, even though the heatsink has mounting points intended for the drive's side screwing threads (the extra screws are even supplied). It may be an old manual print since the online installation guides instruct differently. Probably to avoid ESD from the heatsink to the disk drive (they aren't in contact if not screwed together, there's a microgap).
I followed this instruction on the first installed drive. There was a small amount of "play", since the controller board holding the drive is loose on the heatsink and relies on the port cover pushing the drive against the opposite end of the enclosure to secure it, which it didn't.
I attached my other drives on all mounting points including the heatsink's. No problems so far and no ESD incident.

The port cover is pushed tight into the enclosure and secured further with side screws. However it isn't easy to remove as there's no grip. Expect to use some micro tweezers or so if you intend to frequently swap drives.

The OWC HD enclosure is a fantastic product, great construction, also works from your computer's bus, and no drivers needed.. Great for an alternate boot device for repairs or maintenance. Only real complaint is that the device can get a bit hot after hours of use.
