The Canon PowerShot G15 Digital Camera is a point-and-shoot with expansive creative possibilities. Going beyond the genre's name, the G15 provides you with any number of options for capturing your vision - from 1080p HD video recording to 10 fps continuous burst shooting to numerous shooting modes. In addition, the G15's compact form-factor makes it well-suited for being your go-to image maker.

The PowerShot G15 also features a 5x optical zoom 28-140mm (35mm equivalent) f/1.8-2.8 lens. The lens gives you a good overall range for shooting in most any situation, from group shoots to macro close-ups. The aperture range lends itself to capturing successful images in low-light conditions as well as the ability to render shallow depth-of-field.

The camera's 12.1MP CMOS sensor works together with the DIGIC 5 image processor, comprising Canon's HS SYSTEM. The aforementioned low-light performance is a hallmark of this duo; enabling the ISO to be set up to 12800, if need be. The processor also enables fast transfer of data while powering the copious features and functions of the camera.

Two examples of these functions are High-Speed AF and High-Speed Burst HQ. These two provide the G15 with a continuous capture rate of 10 fps while maintaining image quality. Of course, Intelligent IS image stabilization, a vast range of shooting and recording modes - including 12-bit multi aspect RAW + JPEG capture, and many other features ensure that the G15 is more than the name 'point-and-shoot' would suggest.

Other ways the G15 gives you an edge for your photographic endeavors include the optical viewfinder, a 3.0" LCD, a hot shoe, and a tripod mount. An HDMI connection also provides you with a one-cable connection to your HDTV for instant sharing of recorded videos. In addition, the PowerShot G15 can be used with multiple Canon accessories to expand the camera's creative power. Optional compatible accessories include Speedlites, an underwater housing, and a tele-converter lens, to name a few.

12.1MP High-Sensitivity CMOS Sensor
The PowerShot G15 employs a Canon 12.1MP CMOS sensor which delivers high-quality imaging performance and is optimized for use in compact cameras. Utilizing a sophisticated light-capturing design, it provides high-sensitivity for improved high ISO capture with reduced noise. The sensor also lends itself to high-speed image capture, fast transfer of image data to the processor, as well as enabling rapid continuous shooting (10fps) and quick autofocus
Fast 5X Zoom Lens
Engineered specifically for the PowerShot G15, the camera's 28mm wide-angle 5x optical zoom lens is the right tool for capturing sweeping images from landscapes to cityscapes to group shots. Shallow depth-of-field is possible thanks to the f/1.8-2.8 maximum aperture, and allows for soft background blur for striking images even in low-light settings
Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor
The Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor works with the PowerShot G15's image sensor to enable faster processing speeds, delivering detailed images in many low-light situations without the need for artificial light sources. Noise reduction produces clear images when shooting in low-light at high ISO speeds up to ISO 12800. The fast processing speeds result in fast continuous shooting while maintaining a high level of image quality. With the power of the DIGIC 5 Image processor, the PowerShot G15 can also perform advanced functions like lens correction, special scene modes, and much more
Canon's HS SYSTEM Enables Exceptional Low-Light Performance to ISO 12800
The PowerShot G15 gives you the power to create images with depth, detail, and impact. The 12.1MP high-sensitivity CMOS sensor works in concert with Canon's own DIGIC 5 Image Processor to create the Canon HS SYSTEM. With this proprietary system you'll experience quality tracking performance, even in low-light, and achieve solid image quality even at high ISO speeds, all the way up to ISO 12800
1080p HD Video Capture
Simply touch the dedicated movie button, embedded in the PowerShot G15's thumb pad, to start recording video in 1080p full HD. Video capture in 1080p is vivid and realistic, and Canon's Fine Detail Movie Processing achieves videos with high resolution processing that records approximately 4x the amount of information during video shooting for clarity and sharpness. You're free to use the full range of the zoom in movie mode, and the sound is recorded in stereo. An HDMI output allows you to view and share your videos on an HDTV immediately, simply by connecting the camera to the TV with an optional HDMI cable
Faster Focus and High-Speed Shooting
The PowerShot G15 is equipped with Canon's High Speed AF. The result of several technologies, High Speed AF delivers significantly faster focus speeds for a responsive shooting experience that lets you capture every shot as it happens. Thanks to High Speed AF, the PowerShot G15's shooting time lag is only 0.22 seconds. This technology also powers the camera's High-Speed Burst HQ, with continuous capture at a maximum speed of approximately 10 fps. Moreover, images captured in High-Speed Burst HQ maintain the camera's native image quality
Intelligent IS Automatically Chooses from Six Modes of Image Stabilization
Capture clear, steady images with the PowerShot G15, even in low-light without using a tripod. That's because the camera is equipped with Canon's innovative Intelligent IS. This system analyzes camera movement and applies the best shake correction method for the shooting situation - allowing you to focus on framing and capturing your shot. For stills, the system automatically selects from Normal, Panning, Macro (Hybrid), and Tripod IS modes. When shooting video, the system automatically selects from Dynamic, Powered, Macro, and Tripod IS modes
Creative Possibilities
The PowerShot G15 uses a 12-bit converter to process the output of the CMOS sensor, resulting in true color, smooth tonal transitions and natural gradations. The PowerShot G15 lets you shoot in RAW mode, which records all the information capture by the sensor, giving you flexibility and creative control when editing your images. The camera allows you to record in RAW and JPEG formats simultaneously as well. In RAW mode, you can even select from several aspect ratios, including 16:9, 3:2, 4:3, 1:1, and 4:5
Optional System Accessories
A host of optional accessories including Speedlite flashes, an underwater housing, and a tele-converter lens expand the camera's imaging possibilities. The G15 works with e-TTL EX-series Speedlites, as well as the Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX and the Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX
Bright, High-Resolution LCD
The G15's big, bright 3.0" LCD screen makes framing, shooting, and camera adjustments easy with a wide viewing angle, high contrast, and notable color reproduction. The screen has 922,000 dots of resolution, which enables detailed views of your shots upon playback. For added shooting versatility, the camera is also equipped with a real-image type optical viewfinder for a familiar alternative to composing shots with an LCD screen. You can ensure a perfectly clear view by making dioptric adjustments within a range of approximately +/-2m
Dual Axis Electronic Level
The PowerShot G15 has a Dual Axis Electronic Level that features an artificial horizon over the image on the rear LCD screen or in the viewfinder for easy leveling while shooting. The dual axis electronic level shows both horizontal roll and vertical pitch, making it easy to identify when the camera is in a fixed level shooting position and ready to take the shot
EOS-Like Dial Setting
Like EOS DSLR cameras, the PowerShot G15 employs a convenient front dial. The front dial can be set to control shooting parameters including focus, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, step zoom, exposure compensation, white balance, i-Contrast, and aspect ratio
Appending Copyright Information
The in-camera copyright information feature helps professionals secure control over images by setting copyright data directly into the camera and appending that information to each file in the EXIF metadata
Shooting Modes
PowerShot cameras offer shooting modes that make it easy to take photos in a wide range of shooting situations by providing intelligent presets with optimized settings. Shooting modes include: Custom, Manual, Aperture-Priority, Shutter-Priority, Program, Smart AUTO, Movie Digest, Portrait, Smooth Skin, Smart Shutter, High-Speed Burst HQ, Handheld Night Scene, Underwater, Snow, Fireworks, Stitch Assist, Creative Filters, High Dynamic Range, Nostalgic, Fisheye Effect, Miniature Effect for Movies & Stills, Toy Camera Effect, Soft Focus, Monochrome, Super Vivid, Poster Effect, Color Accent, Color Swap, Movie, iFrame Movie, and Super Slow Motion Movie

I have owned G cameras since G-1 and this is the best of all. I use it as my "always with me" camera. Quality build, quality pictures and video, and ease of portability. I do not miss the swiveling screen, and have always found it more of a hinderance than a help. I can think of little improvements. The optical viewfinder could be better, but I think that is not possible without increasing the size of the camera.

I use the G15 when i don't want to carry around the Canon 7D. The G15 easily fits my pocket and i find it handy to have a quality compact with me but not be in the way when i don't need it. I've used other G series camera and i don't find this significantly different. The lens is faster although i rarely shoot wide open ... the sharpness seems to same as other G cameras and the closeness that the macro can shoot is amazing. The viewfinder is there for convenience, not accuracy as it offers no information on what you are about to shoot and in tele-shooting is off center quite a bit. However, for the price, it works well for what i want and as long as i work in the parameters of its abilities - its a good camera.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G15 Digital Camera:

I was looking for a smaller, lighter, camera and that is exactly what the Canon G15 gave me. I normally use one of my Canon DSLR's but for many situations they are overkill. The G15 is smaller, lighter, yet has many of the same features (such as shooting both JPEG, Raw and a viewfinder for bright sunlight) and plenty of choices for controlling just about everything or for going automatic just for snapshots.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G15 Digital Camera:

Purchased the G15 to replace my older G11. Glad I did. Love the narrower body & the centered LCD. The body finish makes it easier to grip too. And it still has all the great G series features in a compact, professional camera.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G15 Digital Camera:

It takes great pictures with just the auto settings. The main reason I chose this one is the size. Any smaller and it would not have been as powerful, any bigger and it would have been too much to drag around. I was tempted by the S110, which has similar features and smaller, but this one had a better price at the time.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G15 Digital Camera:

I owned 3 other Canon's before I purchased this one and the G15 is by far my favorite. Excellent at capturing photos in low-light situations, fun camera effects mode such as fish eye or color accent, and it has great bokeh!

                              Olympus E-p1

G15 Pros (* indicates the ones that are very important to me):

*Maximum Aperture – I shoot a lot in dim lighting without flash and therefore need a fast maximum aperture. The fast maximum aperture in my G15 (f/1.8) and my G5 (f/2) give me what I need. The slower maximum aperture in my G11 (f/2.8) was very disappointing.

*Quiet Operation – the Canon G series cameras are so quiet that they are my first choice when I am shooting in theatres and recording studios.

*Image Quality – Since I make prints larger than 14X16 inches, image quality is very important to me. The G15 and G11 provide me with the image quality I need.

Menu – very similar to G11

External Controls – similar to G11

Black Body – this small, black, inconspicuous body is my first choice when I must shoot clandestinely.

Small size and Light Weight – when I need to travel with one lens and one body, this fixed lens camera is my first choice.

Focal Length Range – the 28-140mm equivalent focal length (same as the G11) covers 80% of the shots I take.

Fast Aperture – the f/1.8 aperture at the 28mm focal length and the f/2.8 aperture at the 140mm focal length are fast enough for most of the shots I take.

Thumb Rest – too often, on my G5 and G11, my right thumb would accidentally press a button on the back of the camera. Having a safe place to park my right thumb reduces this occurrence.

Texture/Feel – love the feel of the rough texture on the surface on the camera body.

Electronic Level – this feature puts an electronic spirit level in the LCD display. This feature is very useful when shooting landscapes to determine if the camera is level. This feature is not present in the G11 or G5.

G15 Cons (* indicates the ones that are very important to me):

*No articulated LCD – being able to easily take ground level, waist level, and over-the-head shots with the articulated LCD is one of the main reasons I have loved my G5 and G11. The loss of this feature is the main reason I cannot give the G15 a 5-star rating.

*Lens is not interchangeable. Even though this lens covers 80% of my shooting needs, it would be nice to be able to change the lens to cover the missing 20%.

*Variable Maximum Aperture – I would much rather have a constant f/1.8 aperture lens instead of the variable aperture f/1.8 to f/2.8 lens.

*Manual Focus – it is very difficult to manual focus my G15, G11, and G5. I wish I could find a digital compact with an easy to use rangefinder focusing system.

*Microphone Jack – I have a shotgun mike that fits in the hotshoe but the G15 (like the G5 and G11) does not have a microphone jack.

*Image Numbering – wish I had more control over the image numbering sequence so I could differentiate images taken by similar cameras. I run into problems when my two G15 cameras and my G11 create images with the same file name. I would love to be able to place the letter "A" in front of the file name of the G15 images, the letter "B" in front of the file names of the G11 images, and the letter "C" in front of the file names of the second G15 so I could differentiate image A12345 from image B12345 from image C12345.

ISO Control – on my G11, there was an ISO control dial on the top of the camera body. I could change the ISO without turning the camera on. On the G15, the dial was removed. The only way to change ISO on the G15 is through the menu when the camera is turned on.

Battery and Battery Charger – the G15, G11, and G5 all use different batteries and battery chargers. I wish they could share batteries and chargers.

Battery/Memory Card Door - the door is not located in a good position. When I have to change the battery and/or memory card, I must remove the camera from the tripod to open the door. This con is the same for my G11 but not for my G5. In the G5, the tripod blocks the battery door but not the memory card door.

Tripod Socket – is not located in line with the optical center of the lens. This is important when I mount the camera on tripod to shoot panoramic shots that I will stitch.

Interval Timer – the G15 has a limit of 1 to 10 shots with a 1 to 30 second interval between shots. My G11 has a limit of 1 to 10 shots with a 0 to 30 second interval between shots. My G5 has a limit of 2 to 100 shots with a 1 to 60 minute interval. I wish my G15 (and G11) had an interval timer like my G5.

Built-In Flash – the built-in flash and flash switch on the G15 are located where the exposure compensation dial was located on my G11. I need the compensation dial in that location more than I need the flash and flash switch.

3:2 Guide – this feature, which provides crop lines on the LCD display for composing a scene using a 3:2 aspect ratio instead of the default 4:3 ratio, is found in the G11 but is missing in the G15.

Movie Shutter Release – there is a button for the movie shutter release and another button for the still image shutter release. This is different from my other compacts where the same button functions as the shutter release for both stills and movies. Too many times I have mistakenly pressed the still shutter release and thought I was filming a movie.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G15 Digital Camera:

I bought the Canon G15 compact camera as a replacement for my trusty G11, which was stolen by a pickpocket in Paris last month. I like the G-Series because they have a fast wide-angle lens and many of the camera controls and features included with DSLRs in a small package. Plus, the G15 just feels like a real camera in my hands – solid as a rock, and well balanced considering its size. While the G16 is available, the G15 was on sale here at B&H Photo for $[$]. I skipped the G16's wireless and slightly better processor and took the discount. The lens on any camera is what ultimately sells me, and with a f1.8 wide-angle zoom lens, the G15 excels for a point-and-shoot unit. I've shot cameras with slow and fast lenses, and I'll take the fast ones for IQ every time - regardless of how high the camera's ISO may go. Also, call me old-fashioned, but I still prefer a camera with a view-finder. Yes, I do compose mostly with the LCD, but on those bright sunny days when I can barely see my phone or a camera LCD, even a viewfinder with less than 100% coverage is a blessing. Two items that Canon removed are the physical ISO dial on top and the articulated LCD screen. I sometimes do miss the swivel screen. For example, recently in crowded tourist spots, I used the G11's flexible LCD several times to shoot over people. However, I'm already quickly changing the ISO using the back function key and dial, and the bigger LCD is very nice. I do notice the trim new size of the G15, and one could squeeze it into a large shirt pocket, but I continue to holster it in my little belt case.Regarding the hot shoe, some folks note that hanging a big external flash on top of this small camera may look funny. However, I've already taken some good flash photos using my old Canon 580EX and 430EX Speedlites as master and slave on light stands (connecting 580EX with a hot shoe cable). Bottom line: I trust Canon quality and the old-school features on the G15. It's proving itself each time I pick it up.

I really like the camera. I'm a point-and-shoot guy and this camera is very simple and easy to use. Pictures look great. Very solid camera, of good quality at a very good bargain price. I'm very satisfied having gotten this camera and I look forward to using it on a trip this summer.
