Comments about Razer Nostromo Expert Gaming Keypad:

I originally purchased the Nostromo to in the hopes of making it a little easier to switch elemental atunements with playing my elementalist in Guild Wars 2. I had farmed as many functions over to my Mamba as I could and was suffering finger strain trying to quickly and accurately hit F1-F4 on my aging Logitech keyboard.

        So what did I learn?

Well first things first, Razer tends to make a pretty solid product. Love them or hate them, their stuff tends to hit all the right marks for me. And that's the key here, what works for me might not work for you. Is the Nostromo the secret sauce that will take your experience to the next level? You're not going to find out by reading a review. I really wish I could help you, just like I wish the reviews I read could have helped me dollars ago.

This is not to say the device is substandard, far from it. For the right person and the right game with the right this thing would rock. For me and my hand I was left longing for my aging Logitech keyboard. While this has brought us closer than ever, I can't help but look in shame now at the Nostromo sitting idle under my monitor. It's not you, it's me.

On the upside the software was pretty good at getting the thing to do what I potentially wanted it to. The inability to make any gains from those settings was mine.

I have what I would call big hands, I'm a big guy so it makes sense. But I'm never going to be a famous guitar player, I've come to grips with that. What I can't seem to grip is the Nostromo, no matter how great the rubberized finish feels. Traction is not an issue, it's the distance from palm rest to keys and the reminder that I always wished my fingers were about a quarter inch longer across the board. The palm rest does have two settings, which for me are tantalizingly out of reach or child sized. That palm rest and it's lack of customization is my one real beef with the device, which is a shame considering amount of pure plastic space that could have been given over to a simple adjustment mechanism. Bad form.

The Nostromo is an update of an older Belkin product which I had a chance to use long ago and I can tell that some work went into the new version. It's not a radical change, more fit and finish, but it shows. The Razer model is superior.

A word to anyone planing on using this device for Guild Wars 2: Don't plan on using that D-pad for much.

I tried to get it working for movement, but apparently that's a no go currently as you can't map diagonal movement? I'm not too clear on that and there's nearly as much fear about being banned for using the thing as there are people online to help. In the end I tried to get some commands bound to the directionals and ended up over spamming skills because of the orientation of the D-Pad in relation to how I had to hold the controller because of my hand. Again, your mileage may be different. Some adjustment of the physical placement of the D-Pad and hand rests would make the product way more ergonomic and friendly.

This review is getting long so I'll warp it up:

        tl:dr
Great if it works for your hand. If at all possible try it before you buy it

I use this as a more natural way of playing my PC games and as well for windows shortcuts for when i am working. I find the feel and buttons are very responsive and well done. The Nostromo software is amazing after having to go through razer's support website to find the software to allow me to change the settings of the Nostromo key mappings.

Comments about Razer Nostromo Expert Gaming Keypad:

I owned earlier function-specific game controllers and found them to be sort of fiddly, plus, the bloatware that came with them often conflicted with the PC or the games I was playing. Not this one. It is totally configurable -- in fact, you HAVE to configure it fully to use it with your game(s) -- but the configuration editor is easy to use and causes no conflicts with my Windows 8 system. My only quibble is, it seems to assume you have mitts instead of hands: a little awkward at first but I got used to it. A great addition if you like to have long gaming sessions.

Comments about Razer Nostromo Expert Gaming Keypad:

Nostromo is made for gaming but can be used for a wider variety of computer tasks. I use the different keymaps for games and applications (Adobe suite, Sonar, Max/Msp). I also use it as a potential controller for music through Max for Live. It has a solid construction and the blue lighting makes it look cool. I expected a joystick on the side instead of a joystick mounted on a directional pad. The buttons on the bottom row are angled to facilitate acces, but are harder to press from angle (since the button underneath is vertical like the others). Quick switch between side buttons (15, 16 and directional pad) is slightly awkward. Scroll button is just plain awkward without sacrificing the side buttons.

In brief, a very good product that could have a v.2

Pros: Versatile keymap options, precise and easy to program macros, intuitive manager application that runs in the tray, cross platform (windows, MacOsx), comfortable palm rest (I had to get used to it though), looks cool.

Cons: Buttons on the bottom row (11 - 14) angled but hard to push sideways, directional pad instead of joystick, switch between buttons on the side is slightly awkward, scroll button is misplaced on the device
