It also features the ability to hot swap drives for ease and flexibility in case of data loss or corruption.

The transfer speed of data on and off the server is handled with USB 3.0 ports for up to 5Gbps speed. It has a 110.36 MBps read and 84.31 MBps write speed rating, and also includes a Gigabit Ethernet port, USB 2.0 ports and an SD card slot for even faster and more flexible transfer options. The DS213+ also includes a hardware-based Floating Point Unit that speeds up the processing computations.

Like the DS213-S, the DS213+ features backup options that include network and local backup, desktop backup, shared folder syncing, and Apple Time Machine compatibility. It is also capable of backing up from and to USB flash drives and SD memory cards.

The DS213+ can be used as a multimedia server, streaming music and movies over your Internet connection using DLNA and uPnP standards, or as a mail server with POP3, SMTP and IMAP support. You can also use it as an FTP server with bandwidth control, custom FTP passive port range, anonymous FTP and transfer log support. If you need a dedicated print server, the DS213+ can also handle LPR, CIFS, IPP, Apple AirPrint and Google Cloud Print for up to 2 separate printers.

The server also has file sharing capability for individual and group user accounts, along with protocol for managing those accounts, which adds a layer of security to prevent unauthorized access to the server. It also supports RAID 0, 1, JBOD and hybrid RAID configurations, along with support for RAID migration so that you can move data from one RAID array to another.

Dual Core Performance
With Dual Core processing power, Synology DS213+ delivers an average 84.31 MB/sec writing speed under RAID 1 configuration in a Windows environment, and 110.36 MB/sec reading1. The built-in Floating-Point Unit makes for faster thumbnail processing to enhance photo viewing at different resolutions. Coming with USB 3.0 support which offers transmission speeds of up to 5 Gbps, namely 10 times faster than USB 2.0, DS213+ takes less time for data transfer for external hard drives and consumes less power.
Energy Efficient
Synology DS213+ delivers high performance when needed, but during low activity level it also uses a very small amount of power. During System Hibernation mode, DS213+ consumes only 2.6 watts of power to listen for network activities, and resumes back to operation in a very short amount of time upon demand. Compared to shutting off the whole system, System Hibernation brings a closer balance between smart energy management and system responsiveness.
Security
Comprehensive network protocol support assures smooth file sharing across Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. Windows ADS and LDAP integration allows the Synology DS213+ to quickly and easily fit in an existing business network environment with no need to recreate user accounts. Windows ACL support provides access control and privilege settings, allowing users to enjoy a native Windows experience. Internet file access is simplified by the encrypted FTP server and the web-based File Station. HTTPS, the built-in firewall, and IP auto-block support ensure file sharing over the Internet is protected at a high security level.
Software Management
Synology DiskStation DS213+ runs on renowned multitasking operating system, the Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM). Offering a comprehensive list of business applications, the DS213+ can be customized to run multiple applications of your choice to fulfill the requirement of your business environment. The DS213+ replaces several pieces of traditional network hardware with rich features designed specifically for workgroups and offices such as antivirus, video surveillance, webmail, VPN, and LDAP directory services.
The Package Center
Applications are managed in the Package Center, an application portal that hosts applications as ready-to-use packages; to ensure high software integration as well as one-click-installation to eliminate guess work during installation. Additional approved 3rd party PHP web application such as content management, customer relationship management & e-commerce system can be hosted on DS213+ by using Web Station with support for PHP/MySQL web content.
Backup Solutions
Synology DS213+ offers a centralized backup target to consolidate fragmented and unstructured data across a network. PC users can back up their data to Synology DS213+ using Synology Data Replicator software, and Mac OS X users enjoy native Apple Time Machine integration.

A backup wizard is provided for backing up data from DS213+ to another Synology DiskStation or any rsync server via an encrypted connection, or to an external hard drive via USB 3.0 or eSATA connection. The wizard also makes it easy to back up DiskStation data to the cloud via Amazon S3 or STRATO HiDrive. In addition, users can back up and restore DiskStation shared folders in multiple versions using Synology Time Backup package.
Shared Folder Sync
Shared Folder Sync allows users to synchronize a specific folder from Synology DS213+ to another DiskStation- a server-to-client backup mechanism that takes place whenever something is changed on the server side. Users will be able to share documents within their local office seamlessly and safely with encrypted connection. When your DiskStation is down, you will be able to have an immediate backup running in no time.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS213+ 2-Bay All-in-One NAS Server:

I've been using this device mainly as a backup system for my macbook. I got it so I could put most of my files on it and free up space on my computer. I also needed a place to securely store files and encrypt them, so it's been excellent for that.

Overall, I find the Synology to be more than adequate for backups, but too slow for practical use as a media server. Even just using it to serve up my itunes is too slow over wifi in most places, and you can forget serving up video.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS213+ 2-Bay All-in-One NAS Server:

Best home NAS server. Can install many useful applications. It takes sometime to set-up. Documents are hard to find or not very clear.
I wish the processor could be more powerful. Feel a little bit pricy for the product.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS213+ 2-Bay All-in-One NAS Server:

Bought the DiskStation DS213+ to use as a "cloud" for the family. Also as the mail server and a miniature database for my own business.

The product is of good quality and feels solid.

The initial setup is easy. The DSM software is quite self explanatory. Setting up the system and account is a breeze.

I set up with the RAID 0 and it took a couple hours formatting and preparing the hard drive.

The performance is satisfactory. Storing and retrieving files are no issues. Mail server is responsive and reliable. With 2 to 3 devices streaming audio or video simultaneously has post no issue and all smooth. I would recommend this to all in need of a general use NAS.

Purchased due to other reviewer's recommendations on B&H site... For use with twin WD 3TB Red drives also purchased from B&H. Great deal! Very Happy so far... Setup was easy. Web interface software seems pretty solid also. Lots of physical port options on this 2 bay box also. I Also like that it has the OS on the box.

I got the DS213+ to use as a web, video and file server. It is everything I wanted and more. The device performs around 100mb/s and streams video flawlessly. Lots of Apps available in the App store and I can't wait until I can setup the surveillance portion.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS213+ 2-Bay All-in-One NAS Server:

I run a small office and we needed a simple backup solution. After hours of research I located the Synology DS213+. We run 3 workstations a on a Windows 7 Gigabit Network and needed a reliable backup that was simple to manage.

Purchased the DS213+ and installed 2 Western Digital Red Drives, (3 Terabyte ea.) and plugged in the drive on the network. It started working and has worked flawlessly ever since. We installed the Synology management software s on the 3 workstations and preformed backups without any issue. The Synology system is nearly silent as compared to the workstations. The software provided by Synoogy preforms flawlessly and appears perfect for the needs of a small office.

I've contacted Synology technical support to answer some basic questions and they responded within a few hours with answers to the questions. The questions were more of the nature on how to best set up the backups and not so much as a problem. I appreciate the willingness of the technical staff to at least offer an opinion.

Synology cost a little more than the other backups out on the market and is one of the best technology purchases the company had made. I looked at a lot of other backup systems and they appeared to fallen short of what we needed. I tried one from one of the other manufacturer and it quickly became a nightmare and was returned for a refund.

Synology has this product dialed in for the small office market. Great Job!

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS213+ 2-Bay All-in-One NAS Server:

I was going back and forth between a five bay Drobo and a Synology box. After examining what I thought I'd really need, I decided an 8tb dual - drive NAS would serve my needs. I use this both as a media and document server for three macs (one macbook, one imac and one mac pro tower) and as a backup drive for client photos. While the learning curve is a little higher for Synology boxes over Drobo, this serves not only as a secure backup (and a Time Machine Disk for all of my macs) it works well as a media server. They have very good free apps available in the iTunes store; I use the video app to run movies from my iTunes library (also stored on the synology server, freeing up much needed space on my local computers) and use Air Play to stream to my TV (via Apple TV). You can also back up the server with a portable drive as an extra layer of safety. All in all, a well - built, reliable, economic server for home and small business.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS213+ 2-Bay All-in-One NAS Server:

I have wanted a Synology NAS for about 2-3 years now but finally bought the DS213+ after my Lacie died. No comparison. The Synology is an amazing product, although it does take some time to learn all the options and settings. I do find the write speeds going into the NAS are not impressive at all, (much worse from my Mac vs. PC, both over gigabit). The iTunes server works well and doesn't require the drives to spin all the time, (like my now deceased Lacie). The fan is quiet enough that I don't have to turn it off when I'm recording piano across the room.

I love when I get free shipping from B&H cause I almost always get products the next day in Pennsylvania.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS213+ 2-Bay All-in-One NAS Server:

I use my Synology as a bittorrent seedbox, secure picture backup, ftp server, and as an NFS server that serves up video to a popcornhour c200 connected to my TV.

My only complaint is that it runs a qoriq processor architecture which doesn't have a compatible version of Plex available yet. There is a build of Transmission available on the Community Repository.

Setup was extremely easy and the web interface is very slick. Highly recommend this device.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS213+ 2-Bay All-in-One NAS Server:

The supplied apps for showing music, photos and videos together with the cloud app makes this the most useful NAS that I ever have owned.
It also has apps for downloading torrents, email server, iTunes server, antivirus scanner, IP camera server, DHCP server and much more.
It has good security against hackers and it has good power management.
It is also possible to make it wireless by using a WiFi dongle in on the the USB ports.
The SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID) configures itself in less than 10 minutes for 2X2TB.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS213+ 2-Bay All-in-One NAS Server:

I needed a reliable backup for all of my photos and documents. I have owned other less expensive NAS backup drives and they all died within 2-3 years of purchase and provided less than stellar performance. I ordered this unit from Synology after reading all of the excellent reviews. I also purchased (2) WD 2TB drives to setup a simple mirrored array. Setup was simple, the provided software is excellent and backup speed is great. I don't know if this unit will last longer than previously purchased units from Buffalo and Seagate, but I'm betting it does. Solid look and feel make this an excellent choice for anybody serious about protecting their data!

I got this device to save all my photos (800GB) and provide a central place to save and backup files between my laptop, desktop and my wifes laptop. While getting all of the data transferred over, I had the device sitting right next to me. I could not even tell it was there unless I looked at it. No sound, right out of the box. I tossed in two WD Red 3TB drives and it's been doing it's thing ever since. I did look into setting up Crashplan on here and there is a very helpful tutorial available from PCLoadLetter... Just search for it... it couldn't be easier!

Whether you wish to access your office files online, backup your entire database or host your own Website, this small and easy-to-use diskstation handles it all. The raid feature minimizes the risk of data loss due to hard drive failure. An intiutive wizard takes you through the setup process and works great! Highly recommended!

Very reasonable price. Sophisticated but relatively easy to set up. The unit is expandable (but I have not used this feature). It took about 15 hours to set up a 3tb RAID. My only complaint is setting up permissions (where different users have access to limited folders) is not straightforward. As a former user of SnapOS, Synology is more challenging. I am still working with customer support. They do respond via email but not immediately. Overall, this looks like a good purchase. We are very pleased that we can access AFP via the Internet (simple port forward to static IP address on LAN).

I'm using this server to host my large music collection and to backup my and my wife's computers. It works beautifully, but if you're not a "geek" you should expect to do some homework -- read the Users Guide pdf, the customer reviews on [@], and the in-depth online reviews on techPowerUp and HardwareInfo. You'll then feel much more comfortable unpacking and setting up the unit. It's small, quiet as a mouse (even with fan speed at max), and I appreciate its ability to turn itself off and on at scheduled times (off in the dead of night). I look forward to exploring its other abilities over time.
