The 2TB My Passport for Mac USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive from Western Digital is an external portable hard drive that features a 2TB capacity and USB 3.0 connectivity.
It also features password protection and hardware encryption. It is USB powered, so no external adapter or unsightly wires are needed. Although it is formatted for use with Mac computers right from the box, it can be reformatted to work with PCs.
The fast 5.0 Gbps transfer speed of USB 3.0 is attractive, but the unit is also compatible with older 2.0 protocols, so you can use the drive immediately and move up to USB 3.0 when ready. The drive includes WD Drive Utilities which lets you set drive timers, run diagnostics and more.

First off, I'll start by saying that I am extremely brand dependent when it comes to backing up my digital files. I currently own multiple external drives from companies like HP, LaCie, WD, and iOmega. So far I must say that this drive is my favorite. The next best is the LaCie because i've dropped it a bunch of times and it absorbs the shock perfectly without damage.
This drive arrived in no time at all, well packaged. First thing I noticed when I plugged it in was the response time which is about twice faster than any of the other drives I have used (all using the same firewire cable). The transfer rate of data was incredibly fast as well. The drive doesn't get hot compared to the other drives I use(d). The size makes it fit in most men's jeans pockets and definitely any purses. Overall I love this drive and will most definitely be buying more of them for my family and for myself as well.

Comments about Western Digital 2TB My Passport for Mac USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive:
I haven't usb 3.0 on my computer so I didn't test it in high speed condition but I transfered a lot of data in one time and the transfert time wasn't so bad.
I appreciate the compact form, It's really small for a 2TB! And it light too.
I just regret that the wire isn't integrate in the case like on some LaCie HDD (but the description on the product page is clear on this point :) ).

This is a nice portable drive that I use for remote storage of my iTunes library and my photo library. Slow using USB 2 but with a new computer that supports USB 3, I'm sure that the drive will be fine. A good bargain for so much storage.

Comments about Western Digital 2TB My Passport for Mac USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive:
It's faster than the built-in drive of my old MacBook (A1342, 2009) with USB 2.0. I haven't tried it with USB 3.0, and I haven't tried hardware encryption; software for encryption is on the drive. Transferred dozens of GB of data without any problem. Prompt response with directory listings and infos and Adobe Camera Raw and such. Does warm up a bit, but has not gotten hot.I got it with the Nomad case, and the model number of this drive is not listed in the Nomad's manual. It seems to fit better if you replace the rubber "fingers", and that's what's recommended for the non-Mac My Passport, but it works well enough with the original rubber fingers.

Comments about Western Digital 2TB My Passport for Mac USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive:
My iMacs have developed into the most critical tools I have in helping to preserve my memory as I approach old age. A minor technical fluke recently made me aware of how totally dependent I am on having my computers available at all times. I am using these Portable Hard Drives to provide total backups in the event of computer failure. When I first installed them, it took 9-10 days for them to become fully loaded, but there was no interruption in computer use. They are so small, I forget that they are even in place. The cost of the units is minuscule compared to the peace of mind they provide. It is very comforting to know that years of labor is safely stored.

I have been using the Lacie rugged drives for years, but when I updated to the new MacBook Pro Retina, I wanted a big USB 3 drive. These are great. They are reasonable quick, small physically, but big in capacity. They are quiet and run cool. After trying one, I bought two more. A great backup/clone solution.
