The Sound Devices PIX 220i Video Recorder with IPS Display is a file-based video recorder and player with focus and exposure assist monitoring functions. It records in Apple's ProRes or Avid's DNxHD codecs at multiple data rates up to 220 Mbps, in 8- and 10-bit color, and it plays these recordings back as QuickTime files on a 5-inch display that has IPS technology back of it. IPS -- In Plane Switching -- enhances color accuracy and viewing angle. PIX also records and plays back up to 4 channels of audio simultaneously with video.

A powerful feature PIX has is a hardware-based scaler/converter that's menu-operable. It can, in real-time, convert the resolution and frame rate of an input camera signal, and record and output the signal in the new resolution and rate. You can convert up, down, and cross, from 480i through 1080p.

All recording is done onto either 2.5" SSDs or CompactFlash drives, both sold separately. PIX formats both CompactFlash and SSD drives as UDF volumes that are directly mountable, readable, and writable in Mac OS and Windows.

Hardware-Based Conversion
Up/down/cross conversion between 480i, 525i, 720p, 1080i, 1080p
3:2 Pulldown Removal
Actively views video fields looking for duplicates. When these duplicates are sensed, then this cadence is locked in and the appropriate extra fields are removed. The process depends on motion in the incoming video.
Aspect Ratio Conversion
PIX allows for selectable Aspect Ratio picture styles. When converting HD to SD, styles include Letterbox, Crop, and Anamorphic. When converting SD to HD, styles include Anamorphic, Pillar Box, Zoom Letterbox Zoom 14:9, and Zoom Wide.
Audio Delay
PIX enables you to select audio delay to synchronize sound with picture. You can defeat audio delay at audio output while maintaining the delayed audio to the recorded file. This feature is for use when connecting the PIX audio output to the camera's audio input.
Superb Audio Performance
The low-noise (-128 dBu equivalent input noise), high-bandwidth inputs are mic/line switchable and include limiters, high-pass filters, and 48V phantom power.

  • Microphone preamps, on balanced XLR, mic/line selectable with 48V phantom, limiters, high-pass
  • -128 dBu input noise, 115 dB dynamic range A/D
  • Two-channel, line level balanced output on 5-pin XLR

Comments about Sound Devices PIX 220i Video Recorder with IPS Display:

I can't comment on how the PIX works for ProRes or for cameras other than the 1DC. I can only report that I sent mine back because neither Sound Devices nor Canon tech support could determine why my PIX 220i performed so poorly for the 1DC to DNxHD. When recording from a Canon 1DC via Canon's 6' v1.4 HDMI cable to DNxHD 220 on the PIX 220i, the PIX recording turned out much noisier than the Canon's internal h.264 recording at high ISOs. The noise was ugly, very noticeable, including big magenta splotches in some shadows, like 5Dmk2 footage graded past its latitude. Also, the PIX recordings all had a severe green cast, creating extra hassle in post grading.

Even if the recording quality were better, I would've sent this back because it's just too loud. I can hear the fans humming - faintly, but unmistakably - from 10 feet away. Imo, that negates the value of SD-quality sound recording on this device. The PIX 220i will create an annoying background hum in quiet scenes.

For my purposes, this device is unusable. Others have had better luck, so maybe I had a defective model, but right now I can't afford the hassle of testing out another PIX in a variety of situations, just to confirm that it holds up in all of them. I would strongly caution future users to TEST this device thoroughly right after purchase, across a wide range of ISOs and lighting conditions. If it works for your purposes, great, but I still wouldn't feel comfortable relying on this for an entire shoot. Not worth the trouble, testing, tinkering for me.
