Since I one of the main reasons I bought this laptop is for gaming, I will center my review around that but will also review other aspects. For reference, I had a pretty bad laptop before this so your upgrade experience may not be as significant.
This laptop has a Nvidia 635M which is ok for gaming if you are looking for a gaming laptop. It would have been nice to have a 650m. I can run many new (2012-2013) games such as Far Cry 3 on at least medium settings. However, the laptop does get pretty hot (around 70 C GPU and CPU temps).
Speaking of temperatures, the fan is really quiet, even when gaming
Graphics look AMAZING on the HD screen. Also, so far, it seems that the screen doesn't smudge a lot.
Apart from what many say, Windows 8 is actually pretty nice, although you may want to get a program to restore the start button.
This computer boots fast by my standards, however it does take a bit for all the "boot on startup" programs to finish opening.
The 2-second startup is from sleep which activates once you open the lid. Hibernating takes a bit longer to startup but is still quite fast.
The trackpad is nice and big with multitouch gestures, however it seems less sensitive than a macbook's and is sometimes difficult to click and scroll, although that isn't really a problem if you use a mouse. One problem I found is that the program used to enable multitouch sometimes closes and disables it.
The keyboard feels great and it looks pretty cool when backlit in a dark room.
What is a bit annoying that I so far haven't figured out how to change is that whenever you restart the computer, the numlock key gets automatically disabled. On my previous computer, it would remember the setting even if I restarted.
The battery life seems a bit worrying since on low brightness I only have around 3 hours.
The power brick is HUGE though. However it's relatively flat which helps with fitting into bags.
As far as I can tell, the button opposite the power button is kind of a shortcut key. I just use it to turn off the trackpad when I am gaming.
The ripple pattern is not all speakers. The speakers are hidden in them and are about the size of a half-dollar coin.
The laptop is actually pretty light and feeling the front of the laptop gives an illusion of thinness
There are a bunch of stickers that you will probably want to take off as soon as you get it and I had to remove the graphics card sticker since it was crooked and I have OCD.
Overall it is a great laptop for casual gaming (for hardcore you should probably just get a desktop). Although I found a better laptop at the same price, this one is not bad at all.

Bought this for office use. Screen is wonderful and it's the nicest keyboard on a laptop I've ever used. This machine shouts high build quality.

There's a bit of a learning curve with Windows 8, but OS is very fast and responsive.

Three small negatives: I found the touchpad surface to be a bit sticky for my fingers; it's kinda heavy; top of the lid is a finger print magnet.

I'm thinking about purchasing a second one.

I use this laptop for my photography buisiness and for some personal functions.
I WOULD not recommend this machine for photography. For some reason it will not hold any color calibration. It always reverts to a very blue profile. I have been in touch with ASUS and they have been very unresponsive.
i have been using computers in my business for 15 years, so I do know a little.

Also, the touch pad is one of the worst I have used.

The machine also chokes on nikon D800 files in Lightroom. Brings the program to a virtual standstill. Maybe 16GB of Ram would help.

I absolutely love this machine. I had purchased it for the purpose of photo editing, and it has far exceeded my expectations.

The computer is wonderfully fast, easy to use, has a bright and beautiful display, the back-lit keyboard makes typing in a dark environment easy as pie, the sound is absolutely incredible for a laptop, The dedicated graphics card makes photo editing go by at a much faster pace, and perhaps one of my favorite features on this machine is the one-touch assignable button in the upper left corner of the keyboard.

Seeing as I do a lot of photo editing and I use a wireless mouse, the touch-pad can be a major pain in the neck if I'm typing and I accidentally bump it. This is why I love the fact that you can disable the touch-pad, and that's the function I currently have assigned to my one-touch button. I can disable the touch-pad with one push, which has made my life that much easier when using this machine.

As for the durability, this machine is well built. I stupidly was unplugging the power supply while simultaneously holding it over the laptop which was closed. I lost my grip and dropped the power supply on top of the computer. It only left a very small dent. No damage to the contents inside and the screen works perfectly. A dumb mistake on my part that could have been very costly, but thanks to the durable construction and the aluminum casing on the cover, It cost me nothing more than a tiny dent.

Overall, I can't really say anything negative. I love this machine and would purchase it again in a heartbeat.

The speed, screen, sound all seem great so far. Getting used to Windows 8 is an issue. I had someone configure 8 to be like 7 if I wanted, and that seems to be working alright.

This is a beautifully designed affordable laptop for the moderate gamer. Lots of great features that are included as standard (like backlit keyboard). It doesn't get as hot as my previous HP envy when gaming.

After ordering, started to have buyers remorse thinking about Windows 8.... to my surprise, after playing around with 8, I actually think I'll like it. To those that give a low rating for the hardware because of the software, rethink your position. Win 8 is really running on top of 7 and all the features of 7 are available. Take an hour you'll start to see the capability of having both on one machine. Speaking of machine, I ordered the memory upgrade with the notebook and brought it up to 16GB before I even power it up. The more the better. This N56VJ-DH71 has a lot of power! Can easily be a desktop replacement. Audio is better than any other notebook I've ever owned and is actually very pleasing. Keyboard is also very good. To the poster that asked about backlighting... it is try f3 & f4 to control the intensity.

Very nice laptop, build quality is amazing...specs are top notch, everything about the laptop is great. The full hd display is crisp, backlit keyboard is awesome and has levels u can adjust, and sound quality is nice and clear. Just not a big fan of windows 8 and battery life is okay. Also comes with a nice little subwoofer.

I'm an experienced IT Professional and I run multitude of heavy applications (in terms of cpu cycles and ram consumption). I was looking for a laptop with relatively high-end specs,high resolution display,backlit keyboard at a reasonable weight. I'm extremely happy that i bought this laptop and it exactly met my requirements.Pros:- High Res Display, Backlit Keyboard, reasonable weight and price, Good performance, Excellent Audio powered by Bang and Olufsen.Cons:- NoneI'm pretty sure that we have more value for our bucks with this buy.

It has one imperfection - the pad feels flimsy, and I would prefer separate buttons over integrated.

First of all, I have ordered several items from B&H - I have never had a bad experience - and I challenge you to find an 'overall' lower price. Secondly, if you are new to Windows 8, prepare to practice patience. It definitely takes time, and I have only scratched the surface, but I'll get there. Thirdly, this laptop is AWESOME! It is ultra fast, the HD video is top notch, the audio is so sweet, especially with headphones, the backlit keyboard cannot be beat, the number pad rocks, the keys are comfortable and easy to type on, the finish is executive quality, HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY with the purchase. And we bought two of them! My first experience with ASUS. They have a 24 hour CS line, although I haven't had to use it yet. Something tells me that I won't have to! I'm in love with this laptop!

I bought this laptop overseas after reviewing a long list of other laptops with similar specifications. For me this Asus laptop combines a very powerful workstation with a clean design which i can be seen with in front of future clients.
The matte screen makes a big difference if you're working a lot with images. The backlit keyboard works very nicely in dim video-edit conditions.
the only negative points i can name are a rather large adapter which comes with it, and the keyboard sometimes seems to require a little more pressure than with my previous laptop.
In all i am very pleased with the purchase and it performs exactly how i expect it to.

I bought this laptop to replace my 6 core / RAID / GTX 460 Desktop, and now that I have added a SSD to this laptop, I cant go back. The laptop is incredible.This was the perfect purchase. I have 2 things that I would change about the laptop:Touchpad is near Useless - Hard to describe, it would be my least favorite touchpad of all time. I cant imagine working with it. The touchpad I dont care about so much, as I use a mouse anyway.Audio is fantastic - but even with the tiny sub, it has no relation to the FULL GLORY their promo video would have you believe. That said, still best laptop speakers ever by far.Whats GreatThe keyboard is absolutely fantastic to type on. Perhaps my favorite keyboard of all time. Everything else is great. I am writing this review from my N56VJ-DH71 laptop and I have to say, this laptop could not be better. I looked over hundreds of laptops before deciding on this one, and I'm glad I did! This laptop has amazing specs for the price, which I found to be cheapest on cyber monday here - bhphotovideo.com - really nice quick delivery too in a well protected box.
The hardrive has plenty of room and the computer itself is very fast. The screen has a great matte antiglare display and the resolution is incredible.
The computer looks and feels very solid and well put together, but it is still one of the most stylish laptops I've seen. The front cover looks very professional, but collects fingerprints fairly easily so if that bugs you, you'll need to keep a cleaning device around.
The sound quality on the laptop is very good and looks great with the large speakers that even double as a cooling vent! The multi-touch pad looks very fancy and has a good feel to it with the spun aluminum face. I read a lot of reviews on this laptop, and a few people were reporting having trouble clicking the bottom left corner with the touchpad, but I have had no problems with it, and I can even go to the very edge with my finger and it still works great.
One thing I would like to add is that in the product description it describes the keyboard as a standard notebook keyboard, so I had questions about if it was backlit or not, as I had heard both. To my pleasant surprise it did come with one, and it works very nicely!
Battery life varies with what you're doing, but for my normal use of web browsing, video streaming, editing, and a few online games, I am usually getting around 2 hours for online gaming and editing, and about 3.5 for web and video surfing, which is nice. The fan operates quietly and easily keeps the computer cool during intense multitasking.
I would definitely recommend this laptop to anyone who needs a powerful multitasking machine for a good price, and that they can be seen proudly with to show off. If you are into gaming, video/photo editing, video surfing, and other needy tasks, then this laptop is for you. You will be happy you bought it. I know I am!
