Ratings Summary: 4-Stars for the technically capable. 1-Star for the novice. The ASUS X201E is like an Ultra-Chromebook. It is in the price range of a Google Chromebook notebook computer. I bought mine with free shipping. There are indeed some serious issues with the stock product that required an easy solution by a technically capable person. However, this product is a poor release with abysmal product testing with regard to WIFI connectivity. ASUS should have caught and resolved some serious software problems prior to being available for sale. The big problem: WIFII struggled with WIFI on this computer with the stock Ubuntu 10.04 release. The WIFI took a long time to connect, and then it would 'hang' periodically. The remedy that worked: A stock install of Ubuntu 12.10. So, the WIFI issue has been resolved with a fresh install of the latest Ubuntu OS.It has now been a week, and I still am working well with the WIFI solution that worked for me.Performance: "Great!" (for it's intended purpose)This computer is like a Chromebook or the class of computers formally known as a Netbook. That means you can use it to perform nicely for you for office work, web developer work, travel, communications, music, and watching videos. If you want to play any 3D FPS games, don't even go there. It is not meant for 3D FPS games or video editing. But that is not why I want a highly portable notebook computer. My real-world (well, kinda) performance tests:I played 4 videos simultaneously with a dozen open browser windows and tabs. I had a couple of games (Sodoku and Mahjongg) opened, and I had one browser window playing a YouTube video. I also had one Virtualbox open with windows XP in it with a browser opened (I am a web developer so, I do need to test on IE browsers). Overall, that's way more going on than I will typically be doing at any given moment by far. With all of that my CPUs were maxiing out at 90% of capacity, and my memory was about 2GB of the 4GB available. The computer still performed satisfactorily, and I could move about with almost no noticeable issues (the YouTube (flash) video did have a few problems competing for it's time-share slot). In a more realistic tests of the somewhat troublesome YouTube playback in the "stress test", I closed everything except a couple of browser windows. One played a YouTube video, and it did so without flaw.Battery Life: pretty goodI get about 4.5 hours of real world usage on the battery. Overall, that meets my requirements. My typical use without plugged in power is a meeting at a coffee shop or something for an hour. So, it the less-than stellar battery life is well withing my operational needs. When I am on a plane, I really only use my Nexus 7 tablet for reading, audio books, videos, and games. The tablet is much better for a plane than even a small computer like this, IMHO.Ports and Connectors: Two USB 2.0 ports; One USB 3.0 (sweet!); One HDMI (full sized); One VGA; Multi-card reader; Ethernet! Combo headphone / mic Other very good qualities:* The case is very nice, with a textured feel that is nice* The keyboard and track-pad work very nicely, and the large track-pad worked perfectly*The sound system is very loud. This is far superior to many notebook computers I have owned. It is a bit wanting in the base, but there is no problem with the volume .. I think it goes to 11.*The screen is excellent for viewing straight on, or on there lateral periphery. It gets washed out in the tilt quite a bit, but I wouldn't use it that way any way. This Computer is Good For:*General office work: word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, browsing, etc* Developer: web-development, edit source code, browsing, browsing in virtual box (like Vista, Win7, XP, ...)* Server: apache server with PHP, etc; local storage server, music server, video server, etc.* Travel: lightweight enough at 3 pounds; power adapter is multi-voltage/freq, SD slot for camera photos, USB-3.0 for fast external storage; wifi a/b/g/n + ethernet. And with a "Chromebook" cost of under $300 not too painful if it were lost or stolen.* Simple non-3D FPS games: Solitaire, Mahjongg, Sudoko, etc.Simple to moderate image processing. Excellent for casual user for editing travel photos* Nice for listening to music with the speakers. No need for an external set like many laptops* Videos play flawlessly from the hard drive, and streaming video worked without any hiccups or problems* Google-Earth - no graphics problems - the rendering of the 3D images worked wellNot Good For:* Gaming of any type where 3D and FPS is important at all * Video editing * Serious/Professional Photoshop workRatings for the market this notebook serves (5-Star scale):Design: 5 Stars: nice size, nice feel to coverPortability: 4 Stars: under 3 pounds is great (2.5 would be better!)Build quality: 5 Stars: it feels pretty solidKeyboard & Trackpad: 4 Stars: keys feel good, trackpad works nicely. It would have been nice to have a back-lit keyboardOS and Software: 5 Stars: I augment my Ubuntu experience with the Cinnamon desktop, but that's the beauty of Linux: "to each their own".Overall:FAIL: 1 Star Overall Rating for a Novice computer user because of the out of the box WIFI issue. This product meant to work out-of-the-box and it didn't. All you will do with this abysmal failure is turn people off to Ubuntu. Shame on you ASUS!For me, and any technically capable person, it is a solid 4-Star device. But I thought since it came stock with Ubuntu, this would be the first time I wouldn't need to tweak a computer to get it working for me. This was a disappointment. In the end, I am satisfied. Frankly, I wish it would have come installed with a minimal crippled version of Windows-8. That way, I would have simply installed Ubuntu 12.10 from the start, and I wouldn't have had any WIFI problems. However, with the savings of the "Windows Tax", I can use that money to buy my lift ticket at Mt. Bachelor today.

      Problem with Ubuntu and wi-fi

I would not recommend this laptop to anybody because of the big problem from the wi-fi connection and unstable navigation. Ubuntu shut down many time every day!

      Great!
Searusly this is was a great find and deal. Large large touch pad. The function keys don't work well but that is unbuntu's fault. The screen looks great. It also feels very solid. I just resently broke mine I belive by steping on it. But that is beside the poitn. Light solid runs quiet and smooth with everything i have thrown at it which is really just light office work. The battery life is good and it never ever gets hot as far as I can tell.

Amazing computer, especially for $. I use it for some development work at home.// Really solid keyboard// Overall a really solid body -- doesn't feel like a cheap computer.// Doesn't ship with an SSD, instead has a large HDD. Not a huge deal given the price, and apparently easy enough to replace. Coming from SSDs though it is slow.

Comments about ASUS X201E 11.6" Notebook Computer with Ubuntu OS (Black):

This is a very nice, cheap laptop, running a secure operating system with a good selection of software. The machine travels well, it does Internet activities with the best of them. It's also surprisingly strong running virtual machines via Virtualbox (netbooks are weak here). You may encounter issues with WiFi dropping out, but newer kernels and updates will fix that.

The keyboard is laid out in typical Asus fashion (i.e. not good, especially the way they handle the funtion keys), but the touch is good, and there is no flex, or bounce.

The screen is your typical 1366x768 used in cheap laptops. Given the 11.6" screen, such a resolution is fine, however. Viewing angles, while not stellar, are better than what I have seen with other machines.

In short, I can especially recommend the machine if you like the Ubuntu Unity interface, and you don't want to run XFCE (which is what I did). XFCE's power management does not cooperate if Unity is installed first. Attempts to remove Unity to fix XFCE will likely hose the system.

Also strange, the presence of a 100G NTFS partition that just sits there, doing nothing. I suppose you could mount it and copy stuff there, or install Windows (and likely lose the ability to boot Linux). It's all rather strange.

I can report that other Linux distributions work, too. The good news is that you can also reclaim that unused 100G when installing a different distribution. That's part of what Linux is about, after all. It lets you experiment, and play.

Or you could leave your machine as is and have a perfectly serviceable machine with less disk space than it should have.

I don't remember when last felt a product I purchased was such a great value! As far as the hardware specs are concerned, its nothing to write home about. But it is more than serviceable for general office apps, email, and browsing. It feels very solidly built. All of this for $ is a GREAT GREAT deal. Only issue I have is with the trackpad picking up errant touches from my palm. But otherwise I am very happy with this laptop.

The good:Light, small, nice screen (bright and a reasonable size and resolution), good fast turn on, Nice typing experience. Typing was the one main thing I was really worried about. I haven't played any games on it so I don't know about speed. It works as far as the internet and word processing are concerned. The bad: Most of it isn't the laptop's fault. The one thing that is, the power and HDMI cable are to close together for the angled adapter I have.So Ubuntu isn't quite as polished as other operating systems. Seeing all of a window when it is open is often a problem. Also the "sticky" sides are a bit to sticky, perhaps so much more knowledgeable person knows how to deal with these issues. Also I leave it plugged in all the time so I don't know about battery life. But I would recommend one as a good little work computer for writing and doing Excel on.

With Ubuntu installed I can do everything a Chromebook can do, and more. It comes with an office suite. It has more ports. With the USB 3.0 I copied a 1GB movie to it in 10 seconds! It can also play all video formats.

This is my favorite noebook PC I have owned. It is not as powerful as some, but at 2.85 pounds and over 4 hours run time on the battery, I can use it throughout the day on a single charge.

Yes it has Bluetooth 4.0Don't let this little guy fool you. I can do everything I was able to do with my Windows 7 computer. This is like a plastic Vivo book. Asus has always made nice stuff. This one is too! Love the size. Has everything I need. Speed is good it's not i something. You don't need it for what most people will do with this computer, good amount of Ram 4GB, 320GB of storage. Integrated graphics that's good enough. Ubuntu's great! Anyone who used Windows 7 or a Mac will have no problems with it. Easy learning curve. I upgraded my HP to Windows 8, and not happy with it's cellphone like feel. Without a touch screen makes the experience feel awkward. I can't see myself going back to Windows. I can do everything I need with Ubuntu. Not bad for a $ laptop. Hope Asus will make more Ubuntu setup. Starting to want a nice i5 desktop running Ubuntu!

For travel and at home mainly my two boys use it for a little of everything. The slim design and small screen makes it ultra portable. The finish is design to take punishment and not show. PC comes with instant on technology and boots just as fast as an SSD drive (which I own). The only thing that isn't so great is that it comes with Ubuntu. Can't say anything bad about it but I prefer Windows 8 which I installed. The processor and all hardware work great with Windows 8.

Laptop was well packed, and shipped quickly. Thanks B&H!

Upon starting up, I had my doubts and thought something, and least 1 thing would go wrong. I was mistaken. It booted quickly and recognized my wireless network instantly. Then I was notified there were 11 updates. I ran the update and then was ready to use it as I would my workstation.

Just a note. This laptop sold by B&H comes with 4GB of ram. All the others came with only 2GB and cost more.

                            Very pleased.

The main purpose of possessing Asus X201e is to be my little helper at college. Truth be told, I waited for a Samsung Chromebook, but having got sick and tired of waiting I found this unit. Lots of pluses such as good battery life, pre-installed Libre Office, which is more than enough to substitute Microsoft Office, solid body, touchsoft plastic, great quality of sound, still cannot believe that 2 small speakers are able to generate such audio stream, but the screen could be better IMHO. 4Gb of RAM is enough for everything (take into account that you will not find heavy games for Ubuntu) and of course Ubuntu itself. This is a powerful OS with lots of ways to alter it, please take a look at COmpiz and customers themes on youtube. The laptop starts within 20 secs and shuts down in 4 secs. Oh, forgot to say, it is very light and stylish. Keyboard is the same and I dont have any issues with it so far, Despite Chromebook you can work offline and Skype is available for Ubuntu.

I have had this one week now. It is a great performing notebook. Screen is bright, crisp, and the colors are good. The thing feels like a $1000 ultrabook for a lot less. The sound is loud. Not much of bass though, but it is the best audio system I've had in a notebook.I cannot stand the Ubuntu Unity interface, so I installed Cinnamon. First, however, I installed Ubuntu 12.10 which works a lot better on the WIFI.

Truth be told, I waited for Samsung Chromebook for months, but having got tired I miraculously found Asus X201e at B&H. This laptop is sleek and despite Samsung Chromebook the body is very solid, plastic is very pleasant to touch. No scratches so far and I believe in the future. It has plastic or aluminium area around the keyboard (a review made in Italy says it is made of aluminium) which is silver so when you have your laptop on the table you cannot see a black bottom and it seems like ultrabook. Needless to say that Asus always makes good products. The second great feature is Ubuntu. It is very intuitive and user-friendly. Look up compiz and different themes for Ubuntu on YouTube. Believe me, you will be surprised. I installed a theme that makes windows burn down as you close the ones. A few desktops like in Android or iOS. The systems starts and shuts down in seconds. Really. My main laptop is Acer V3-731 (sure from B&H) which houses a very bright screen so comparing to Acer a display in Asus is not as bright, but the picture is sharp and contrast. I dont know why, but my unit has 4 GB Of RAM and built-in bluetooth. Quality of sound is outstanding. By the way, a microphone and a camera are very good. So Skype users will not be dissapointed. Battery life is quite long. But sometimes it is indicated a few hours left in a minute you have an hour left and in another minute time is back to a few hours. Office suite is preinstalled. Libreoffice is very powerful (Microsoft is better for sometimes and more expensive though). For those who are not familiar with Ubunty the fact that there are not viruses will be a good point as well. So with free shipping you get a nice built laptop with decent screen size and resolution, a sharp display and great speakers and slim body. Also you get a flexible operating system without viruses and lots of programs.
