The K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera from Pentax is a top-of-the-line APS-C DSLR camera.  It offers a 16.3MP CMOS sensor with integrated Analog/Digital conversion circuitry for high resolution photos and video. And the K-5 IIs brings with it a new, highly advanced and extremely accurate 11 point SAFOX X autofocus system. This new autofocus system offers a wide EV focus range which means faster autofocus with less hunting in low-light situations and improved AF accuracy when using fast, wide-aperture lenses. The AF sensor also includes the Select-Area Expansion feature which automatically tracks moving subjects as they proceed across the frame.

The K-5 IIs distinguishes itself from the K-5 II because the anti-aliasing filter has been eliminated from its sensor's design. The filter reduces digital distortion, in particular the moiré pattern found in certain shots, however it also decreases detail resolution. Removing the anti-alias properties means the K-5 IIs offers superior resolution and intense details and is ideal for photographers who shoot in RAW and can control better moiré and distortion without the in-camera filtering.

The ISO sensitivity range on the K-5 IIs is impressive, ranging from 100-12800 in normal setting and expandable from 80-51200. Combine this with the Pentax body-based Shake Reduction stabilization system and you have a camera that performs incredibly well in low light situations and when shooting telephoto.  Expect nothing but sharp, blur-free images in both photo and video. The K-5 IIs also allows for a shutter speed as fast as 1/8000 of a second which will stop fast motion subjects in their tracks and provide wonderfully detailed sports and wildlife shots. And, at 7 frames per second of continuous shooting, you will never miss that action shot! Accurate exposure metering is provided by the Pentax 77-segment metering system, so whether you prefer to shoot with auto exposure or with full manual control, the K-5 IIs is for you.

The K-5 IIs has Full HD 1080p video capture at 25 frames per second. Stereo sound recording is available via the built-in microphones or through external microphones connected at the camera's 3.5mm stereo microphone jack. An HDMI port connects your camera directly to HDTV and allows for immediate screening of your widescreen video in glorious HD.

For playback and composition, the K-5 IIs has an air-gap-free, scratch resistant 3.0" LCD with 921,000 dots of resolution that offers detailed and color-accurate images even in bright sunlight. A pentaprism viewfinder with 100% field of view and 0.92x magnification is available for classic SLR framing, and a built-in electronic level with tilt scale display will help keep images straight when shooting products or architecture.

For the photographers who shoot primarily in RAW, the Pentax K-5 IIs offers native support for both Pentax PEF and Adobe DNG 14-bit RAW files. A customizable RAW/Fx button allows for easy access to your most used shooting settings including immediate RAW access and the RAW Data Retrieve function saves the original RAW data of a just-recorded JPEG format image.

The Pentax K-5 IIs also has a wide range of in-camera image processing and filters available for creative touches and HDR capture to provide balanced exposures when shooting high contrast scenes.

While the Pentax K-5 IIs is a user-friendly camera accessible to all, it is particularly ideal for shooters who work in extreme conditions. A durable magnesium alloy cover surrounds a stainless steel chassis and the body is fully weather sealed with 77 protection seals throughout the body. It is cold proof to 14º F (-10°C) and has been tested to 100,000 shutter releases which means you can count on this camera, especially when the going gets tough.

Note: Please note - The K-5 IIs is optimized for photographers that want the maximum sharpness from RAW files. Those that shoot mostly JPEGs may want to choose the K-5 II model instead. To achieve maximum sharpness in RAW files, the low-pass filter in the K-5 IIs is not configured with anti-aliasing properties. While this may incur an increase in moiré patterns in some images, this presents less of a post-production concern when working exclusively with RAW files. JPEG formats that are affected by moiré could become more difficult to work in the post-production process.

Anti-aliasing Filterless Design
The K-5 IIs is offered without an anti-aliasing filter, which is commonly found in most DSLRs (including the K-5 II) in order to smooth computer generated imagery by decreasing high frequencies and distortion. However, the filter adversely reduces detail resolution. Without the filter, the K-5 IIs creates deeply rich, detailed imagery at supreme resolution levels. It is the perfect solution for photographers who practice commercial and studio photography where camera settings, lens selection, lighting, and other shooting conditions are controlled to prevent moiré.

I've been a pentax user for about 8 years now.I needed a camera body which was weather sealed, as I worked for Royal Caribbean as an onboard technician, and I knew I would be taking a lot of photos either on the deck of the ship or perhaps a sandy beach every once and a while.I started with a k10d and a single "modern" lens a tamron 18-250, then upgraded to a k20d body and kept that same lens for a few years. Rather than upgrade to the k7, k-r, k-x, k-5,or k-30 when they came out, instead I started investing in better lenses and some flashes. I obtained the DA* 16-50mm 2.8, a D-FA 100mm Macro 2.8 WR, and a 50mm 1.4 Pentax prime for lenses.I also got the AF160 ring flash for the 100mm macro, as well as the pentax 540 and 360 flashes. All of that gear is the reason why I never upgraded from my k20d body, It was good enough for my needs, and it was too expensive to think of upgrading after the money I spent on other pentax items. With that said, I thought the k20d was an excellent camera. It was my workhorse for many years and the only true complaint I had was low light performance was a little lacking, and sometimes auto focus would hunt with the macro lens, which is still screw driven, and has no "travel limiter" to keep it from extending in and out all the way. When the announcement came out for the k5ii and k5iis bodies, I thought, now may be the time to buy a used or even new k-5 classic, because of the price drop. But, after much thinking, i decided I would take the leap of faith and jump straight to the k5iis. I sold my k20d Body, battery grip, and my original tamron lens on [*], and put the money towards the k5iis.After I placed my order with B&H photo, It arrived from the next day with standard UPS shipping! (I'm located in northern NY state), which was a nice surprise! My first impression of it right out of the box and it was an incredible improvement over the k20d, which I had been using almost daily in the weeks before I sold it. (11,676 shutter count on my k20 by the way)The LCD screen was such a huge improvement on the k5iis over the k20d. Even though i didn't have the k20 to compare to the k5iis, there was no need. I had been looking at the k20d screen after taking shots for years, and I had gotten used to it being slightly low res, and knowing that my photos would look better once viewed on a laptop.the K5iis LCD screen, which is supposedly an improvement over the k5, (which i cannot speak for because I never saw in person)...well, it's so sharp i can practically go pixel peeping right on the screen and know for sure if the whole shot was in focus. For iphone owners like me, it was like the difference between an original iphone screen and the iphone with retina display screen... i mean seriously clear. After my amazement of that wore of, I noticed and appreciated the slightly smaller and different body design. I liked the changes made to the SD card slot, which opens easier than the k20d sd card slot did. I liked the dedicated ISO button, and the dedicated live view button, although I rarely use live view for shooting.I am very impressed with the menu system on the k5iis vs the k20d... it's a huge improvement and allows quick changes practically on the fly without having to dig through many menus and sub menus to switch options on and off.One thing I miss, however, is a dedicated "Shake reduction" on off switch. Perhaps there is a way to dedicate a button to that function but... it's something I leave on most of the time except when i tripod shoot, obviously.Picture quality? It goes without saying the k5iis blows the k20d out of the water. Low light performance and focusing is everything I want it to be. I can't imagine it being much better... ESPECIALLY for the money. I spent less than [$] with tax and shipping so, I am very pleased with the performance and Image quality for the money. Colors appear more vivid than the k20, edges sharper, and the over all level of detail is just incredible when viewed at 100% crop. When I shoot macro, I really feel like the k5iis does my macro equipment much better justice than the k20d could do as far as sheer level of detail.I'm not the best person for writing a detailed in depth image quality review, but [*] has test shots for the k5iis out now, and i suggest going there or another professional camera review site. One thing that I wish it had was support for the faster SDXC card speeds. UHS-1. I don't have a specific need for it nor do i feel like my write speed is to slow with a Sandisk extreme 3 30mb/s 4gb card... but... it would have been nice to add that capability to a camera of this cost when others in this range support that feature. Again, when taking videos or shots, it still seems faster than my k20d, and I have nothing else to compare it to, so... look to other review sites for specific details on read/write speeds. I have not had any real world shooting problems with the rumored "moire'" that it's supposed to be prone to, due to the removal of the AA filter....Again, there are other websites dedicated to that type of testing that you should check out if you're worried about it... But it's not been an issue for me.All in all, I'm very glad I spent the extra [$] on a new k5iis than on a new or used k5. Selling my old camera body and some other of my lesser used equipment helped offset the cost, but... I have no regrets about buying it.It's a tool that i'll be using every day for the next several years... and IF pentax comes out with a full frame, i'll consider selling this but... only if they have the glass to go with it.I'm a very happy customer. And I'll be sticking with pentax for a while, rather than "jumping ship" and going to canon or nikon just because pentax isn't full frame with their newest bodies.I'm not just saying that to make myself feel better about a near [$] purchase either... I truly love this camera as an upgrade over the k20d.Thanks for reading!

This is a pretty cool camera. It's a good value for the money, even though the new K-3 has been announced. The K-5 IIs is compact, but solidly built. It's not too small but more like a "baby Nikon."

I bought this because I wanted something a bit lighter and smaller than my Nikon D600, and it's all that.

But I was disappointed with the small selection of lenses offered by Pentax. I just couldn't find a wide, fast prime or zoom that I liked. I got some good shots outside, but none that I liked inside without a flash.

Perhaps I've been spoiled by the great images I get from the D600, but the Pentax photos didn't really come close.

I returned the camera and bought a Nikon D7100, with which I've been thrilled. It's more compact and lighter than the D600, but I get the same image quality I've come to like.

So, if you have Pentax lenses - this is a good value and a good buy. Otherwise, get a D7100!

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

I am a keen amateur photographer and use this camera several times a week, daily if I can. My main interests are landscape and nature, For me this camera is ideal , strong, light and water resistant. The backward compatibility with older Pentax lenses wihle retaining it's shake reduction is a real bonus. No real gripes apart from a rather fiddly card removal.

For weather-sealed durability, highest image quality, and lowest noise, there is no comparison anywhere near this price. Does require a little more research to find suitable high-quality, low cost lenses than Nikon or Cannon.

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

Avid amateur (30+ years) selling limited fine art prints through a small gallery in PA. Switching to Pentax from Canon was a leap of faith but I could not be happier. In terms of features and compact robust ability the bang for the buck with the excellent IQ blows competitors out of the water. Small form factor, in body IS....and just simple to learn and shoot. The lack of ISO auto setting documentation is an oversight easily corrected by a visit to Pentax forums.

I cannot comment on the video as I don't use that function.

I shoot everything. Landscapes, architecture, wildlife, long exposure, etc. I wanted a 2nd body as a backup, and thanks to B&H having some of these still available (I thought they were gone), at a great price, I'm all set. Pentax should have never discontinued this model in my opinion. It's so good, I've never been interested in a K3 but the full frame I will look into, just waiting to see specs and reviews. But regardless, I'll have a IIs body as well, and another to pass on to my son.

Great DLSR, takes awesome pictures. Moire has surfaced in some pictures, but they were clothes with patterns. Camera also likes to shoot in higher ISO in auto mode but it takes great high ISO shots with barely any noise, plus I bought this camera to shoot in manual mode most of the time. Lenses are bit noisy to focus automatically but if in manual quiet as a mouse.

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

So, I upgraded to this camera from a mirrorless camera that had no viewfinder. The biggest reason why I switched was to have a viewfinder and better battery life. I got a lot more out of this purchase than I thought. I was looking at Canons and Nikons, but then I randomly noticed that they had the k-5 iis for $ (body only). I looked elsewhere, including @, and it was $ + more expensive everywhere else. What struck me first from all the reviews I had read and watched was that it was weather resistant and that there are so many controls, buttons, switches etc. I like having two control dials for shutter and aperture and a status LCD. Try getting any of that with the other brands at $. The shutter is very quiet compared to a Canon, and the images look great. There's a switch for auto/manual focus, RAW button, and I love that there is image stabilization in camera, so you don't need OIS or vibration reduction on your lenses. The only "con" I have is that it is really heavy, at least compared to entry level DSLRs. But, it feels super solid and well built, just heavy; I'm not sure what an enthusiast level DSLR weighs, though. It is still very comfortable to hold and I would definitely recommend it to anyone I can, UNLESS you want a larger lens ecosystem.

            A giant killer

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

The reviewer right before me (Kraig) nailed it perfectly. I just wanted to add my personal findings. The K5-IIs rivals my D7000, 6D, and 5Dmk3 in daylight and moderately low light. It automatically detects if I use a tripod and turns off the SR feature. Moire? Even my D7000 exhibits moire, but Light Room gets rid of them automatically. I can't wait to see the release of a Pentax full frame body.

Never thought that I would see much difference since it's not like I was skipping series it generations but wow. Comfort level off the roof. IQ off the roof. One thing is letting the reviewers convince you to buy something and another is to realized how correct they were. ....

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

Bought the camera a little over a year ago. Chose it over the Nikon 7100 and Canon 70D, as I was not tied to a system due to previous lens stock. I am so happy I gave Pentax a chance. After reading the reviews and weighing the pros and cons, the value this system brought to the table was impossible to pass up.

I know it isn't full frame and yes the lens selections are a bit limited, but you have to have one of these in hand to appreciate it. The controls are very intuitive. The buttons are well organized and both logical and ergonomically perfect. I added the additional grip and it is just perfect for my large hands.

As a new person to the DSLR market, I would not have wanted to learn on another camera. It is so well built that when I have a Canon or Nikon in hand it feels like a plastic toy.

Now to the image quality...it blows you away! It may be only 16MP but the images this camera produces can only be described as STUNNING. The money I saved on the body, I invested in quality glass and you can't go wrong with a FA*77mm f1.8 for portraits, Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 for wide angle photography, and DA* 50-135 f2.8 for everything else. I have other lenses now, but I find myself using these the most. ISO is usable to 3200 and occasionally 6400, so very respectable in low light environments.

Many say the focus system lags and Pentax isn't great for video and I would probably agree with these statements although I have never had a problem locking in a quick auto focus point, just wish there were more than 11 points. As for video, that is what my camcorder is for, but in a jam, it is capable of shooting an event and capturing the moment.

They recently discontinued the k5IIs and if you are looking of an incredible value, spend $500 and get a $1400 camera system. You won't regret it.

I already own this camera and have been using it for nearly 2 years. I purchased a second one due to the discounted price. I cannot recommend a finer APS-C camera. Weather protected body, durable, great ergonomics. The best part about this camera is that it has shake reduction built into the body so you can utilize it on legacy lenses. This not only allows Pentax lenses to sell for much less than their counterparts, but allows you to use 30+ year old lenses with ease. There is nothing negative about this camera, and with the price, there was no way I could pass up buying a second one.

I bought this to replace a stolen K10D, all of whose complexities I still hadn't figured out. Good luck to its new owner in southern Africe! The K-5 IIs seems a little easier to use, and thus far the results are terrific. Had the non-"S" version been available, I would have taken it, but this one seems fine, and I've not had trouble with lighting issues. I've never had a better camera, and it's a bargain to boot.

There a several reasons I am very Happy with the K5 iis but the most overwhelming one was when I discovered that the finding by other reviewers that this baby focuses in almost total darkness is indeed true. All my old slow autofocus lens have now found new life.
Sharpness and color rendition are simply stunning. My old k5, which is still in repair will most likely never get used again.
