The Pentax smc Pentax-DA 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 ED SDM Lens is an all-encompassing zoom lens, featuring a 15x zoom range from a wide 18mm to a long 270mm (equivalent to 27.5-414mm in 35mm format). Benefitting the long reach of this lens, two extra-low dispersion elements have been incorporated into the lens construction to help reduce chromatic aberration and improve overall image clarity. A minimum focus distance of 1.6' across the entire zoom range also makes this lens an effective tool for macro and close-up work.

The SDM autofocus system has also been integrated into the design, which utilizes a supersonic motor for fast, quiet autofocus operation. The lens also features a rounded 7-blade diaphragm for smooth out of focus regions and less susceptibility to highlight streaking.

Wide-to-telephoto zoom lens is equivalent to 27.5-414mm in 35mm format.
Two extra-low dispersion (ED) elements help to reduce chromatic aberration and improve image quality and clarity throughout zoom range.
SDM autofocus system incorporates a supersonic focusing motor for fast, quiet action.
Specifically designed for use with Pentax K-mount DLSR cameras.

I used to lug half a dozen lenses with me, until I started using a Tamron 18-250, which I changed for a Pentax 18-250, and since last month, upgraded to the Pentax 18-270.

One very good move: I managed to change a very good lens for one even better!

I am an enthusiast, and love travelling, and decided that the best all-rounder is a 18-270 lens, where I am always prepared for whatever surprise I find - a bird far away, requiring the 270mm, or a sunset, demanding 18mm. A close-up, like a flower, or family and friends getting together: whatever your need, it is there for you, without wasting precious time to change a lens, risking to loose the moment or even getting dust on your sensor.

    The perfect traveler's companion!

The 18-135 mm lens let you move focus while on automatic focus and if you want the off center point of focus you just switch to manual. Its a quick operation that the 18-270mm lens does not have. And will not have because obviously the motor in the body is not suffient to move the 270 mm lens and thus the motor in the 270 mm lens.

I have used this product on my K3-II for about 2 weeks and have seen fine results. I plan to use it in traveling in the next six months and will know more then. Thus far, I find it very sharp at all stops, stiff focus (which I personally like because it will not drift) and focuses very quickly and quietly. Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase and would certainly recommend it to others.

I have only had this lens for a couple of weeks, but I am very pleased with it so far. I also have the Pentax DA 18-135, and the 18-270 is definitely an upgrade. It's quiet and seems sharp to me throughout the range that I have used most: I tend to back off from the 270 endpoint a bit. Not a lightweight lens, but you can't heav everything, and I think most people won't find it cumbersome to walk around with. If I ever get a vacation, this will be the lens I take.

Comments about smc Pentax-DA 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 ED SDM Lens:

This lens has outperformed both my expectations and many of the on-line reviews. Image quality, flexibility, amazingly quiet autofocus, all came together to satisfy my needs.

I firmly believe this great walking-around lens is the perfect complement to my primes that range from 15 to 35, 50, 77, 100 mm. The only downside, perhaps, is the speed that does limit working in subdued lighting. However, the price of a fast lens with such a focal length range would be prohibitive - I can learn to live with it. I love this piece of glass.

Comments about smc Pentax-DA 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 ED SDM Lens:

After a two-week trip to Alaska, in which I was hiking every day and encountering many (inconvenient) situations that required lens changing, I swore that next time, I'd have a superzoom lens on my K-3. This was the obvious choice, as the Pentax and Tamron 18 - 250 lenses are out of production. The lens focuses quickly and quietly, finds focus easily at all focal lengths, and the image quality is better than I was expecting. No, it's not very fast and it's not as sharp as a prime lens. If you need that for every shot, this lens isn't for you. But for if you're headed for a place where changing lenses constantly is going to be inconvenient, this is a good choice. If it was weather-resistant, I'd give it 5 stars.

Been using Sigma's 18-250 Macro until this little gem came down in price. In terms of center image quality my DA lens wows across the whole range, but compared to my Sigma, seems a bit softer fully extended. I understand this trade off, and love the extra reach to pull subjects in closer. Thanks to the great B and H deal, I'm extremely satisfied with my new 18-270. Only wished it was available as a WC series.

It is exactly what I was looking for, THE zoom! With it I am no more in the need to change lenses and can take only the camera with me in my excursions, very confortable ...and no risk to let the dust enter the camera. This is a perfect lens for traveling and everyday-useage. I love it, as it is versatile, ranging from wide to telephoto, which avoids me changing lenses all the time and getting my precious sensor dirty/dusty. I seriously recommend it to people who love to have their camera at the ready, but do not like to change lenses all the time. I have no issues with focus at all.

Wonderful zoom lens!! It has incedible zoom, and the focus ring is much better than others I've used (only matters for manual focusing). If you want to only carry one lens around I highly recommend this one for the gig! I use it for everything from landscapes to close up shots. Great glass for the price. You're very lucky if you get to learn photography on as versatile a lens as this one!

All in one nice lens especially when want to travel light only with one lens. It is slightly soft on wide aperture and from start getting sharp from f/6.3 then f/8 to f/11 is very sharp, very nice built in quality and good IQ when comparing with same range 3rd party lenses. I used this lens quite a lot and observed that it getting better and better day by day which means that need time to understand the specification of this lens in order to get the full positive result. I would have been 5 stars if focus was slightly fast in low light condition.

I must say I am pleasantly surprised with this lens. I was worried it might be heavy, but I can walk around the city or park all day! It has become my standard lens.

I love the quiet focus and range of this lens. I was using the 50-200 and would have to change lens for a wide angle shot. The 18-270 covers it all. I have been able to get some amazing macro shots too.

I would buy this lens again without hesitation.

Comments about smc Pentax-DA 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 ED SDM Lens:

I have used Tamron 18-200, Sigma 18-250 and then just came across to Pentax 18-270 and I must say that it was not bad to make up my mind and buy this lens.
This lens is amazing all in one lens, I used it on my vacation trip and was extremely happy with the performance.
Fast Auto focus though a bit struggle in low light but still much better than others,
I don't think its a negative point since we all know that we have to compromise somehow for all kinds of zoom lenses.
The sweet point of this lens start from 6.3 then 8 to 11 like a razor sharp.....

Got this lens to replace a Tamron 18-200mm zoom.
The Tamron lens was working well, but I liked the extende zoom to 270mm and the SDM focusing as I shoot a lot of action shots. Used it last weekend to cover multiple events at our community Independence Day activities for the local newspaper. Took photos of the model airplane show, boat parade, swimming pool events, sky divers, and fireworks, all with good results. Shot over 500 photos. Would recommend this highly.
