Questions? Ask our experts:

The V-LUX 4 Digital Camera from Leica is an advanced point-and-shoot camera with a newly developed CMOS sensor and a fast 24x optical zoom lens with f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range. It brings to the table high resolution, fast and reliable performance and the quality of the Leica name.

First and foremost, the V-LUX 4 boasts a newly designed Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens with a 24x optical zoom which allows it to traverse the range of focal lengths from 25-600mm in the 35mm format. That huge range of focal lengths takes you from true wide angle to ultra telephoto and incorporates almost any type of shot you can imagine. More so, its fast aperture of f/2.8 throughout the zoom is equal to that of any professional grade interchangeable zoom lens. You can confidently shoot in low light and with long focal lengths knowing that faster shutter speeds will keep your images sharp. And the integrated optical image stabilizer will further reduce blur and the effects of camera shake on telephoto and low-light shots.

An impressive lens like the Leica 25-600mm f/2.8 deserves a sensor to match and the V-LUX 4 abides. A new 12.1MP CMOS sensor delivers exceptional image quality and fast autofocus. An increased ISO sensitivity range up to 6400 provides low-noise imagery in limited light and you can expect sharp details and saturated colors when shooting fast moving subjects in telephoto lengths.

High image quality is true of video as well as still photography and the V-LUX 4 shoots Full HD 1080 AVCHD video at up to 60 frames per second. Fast moving action, such as sporting events, is captured in crisp detail and the full range of 24x zoom is available while shooting. Also, a one-touch dedicated button can switch you from video to photo and back again in an instant. Added convenience comes in the form of MP4 video capture as an alternative to the higher quality AVCHD. Save your videos in MP4 and you're able to directly upload them to the internet without conversion. A built-in stereo microphone with wind filter allows for quality audio to match your video.

For image composition the V-LUX 4 provides two options, an integrated high resolution (1.3 million pixels) electronic view finder and a 3.0" LCD screen. The view finder offers 100% image view and ultra sharp details for fine focusing, it also displays all the menu settings and capture options. The LCD, which provides superb playback, can tilt and rotate for composing from low-angles, from overhead or in a manner more discreet than bringing the camera to your eye.

Fast performance is also part of the V-LUX 4 package. It starts up in less than one second and can autofocus in less than a tenth of a second. Its burst rate is as fast as 12 frames per second in full resolution when you need to capture that one perfect shot amidst a flurry of activity. And the V-LUX 4 saves its images in both JPG and RAW so that you have more options for creative control in post processing.

Newly Developed Fast DC Vario-Elmarit 24x Super Zoom Lens
The new high-performance DC Vario-Elmarit super zoom f/2.8 lens has an enormous range of focal lengths from 25mm wide-angle to 600mm super telephoto. Equally impressive is its constant lens speed of f/2.8 throughout the entire zoom range. Thanks to this fast aperture and an integrated image stabilizer, it is possible to use shorter shutter speeds and avoid the effects of camera shake when shooting handheld. This means that sharp pictures of objects at long distances are possible even in poor light. The lens offers a 52mm filter thread for use of various lens filters.
Low-noise 1/2.3" 12.1MP CMOS Sensor
The 12MP CMOS image sensor of the Leica V-LUX 4 offers exceptional image quality. The camera delivers quality pictures in any light and at ISO settings as high as 6400. With its high dynamic range and saturated colors, the V-LUX 4 produces outstanding still pictures and videos alike. It can also capture fast moving subjects in sharp focus.
High-resolution Integrated EVF with 1.3 million Pixels
The newly developed Electronic View Finder has a significantly higher resolution than its predecessor, the V-LUX 3. It guarantees a perfect assessment of subject composition, showing 100% of the image frame and displays all the relevant camera information and settings. Thanks to its magnification function, users can zoom in on details of their subjects, while a dioptre compensation setting makes it ideal for use by spectacle wearers.

3.0" Tilt-and-Rotate LCD
The 3.0" tilt-and-rotate LCD allows users to take snapshots in any direction, even overhead or from low-angles. Self-portraits or macros close to the ground are no challenge for this highly flexible display.
Full HD 1080p AVCHD and MP4 video capture
The V-LUX 4 captures Full HD 1080p video in AVCHD format and at 60 full frames per second. Thanks to the new sensor and its ability to capture faster frame rates, even fast-moving subjects are captured and reproduced in outstanding detail. Zooming during video capture is supported over the entire 24x zoom range and toggling between photo and video is possible with just a touch of a button. Videos can also be saved in the Internet-friendly MP4 format and be uploaded directly from your computer to social media or mobile devices without any need for conversion. An integrated stereo microphone with a built-in wind-noise filter ensures outstanding audio quality too.
360º Panorama
The V-LUX 4 has a panorama feature for shooting photos up to 360º.
Performance Speed
The V-LUX 4 has an impressive burst speed of up tp 12 frames per second at full resolution. Autofocus responds in less than a tenth of a second and the start-up time is less than 1 second
JPG and RAW
Photos are saved in both JPEG and RAW image formats offering the user more freedom in image post-processing.

I have been involved in photography since 1954 when I developed and printed my first role of film for my Photography Merit Badge! I grew up with a 4x5 Speed Graphic, a 6x6cm Rollie and on through the 35mm advancements over the years. I truly thought that digital would be a flash-in-the-pan, a phase. But this Leica is an amazing little machine that does everything I could ask of it, except perhaps for the wall-size blowups which I can get with my Canon EOS 5D Mark ll with its full frame censor. The lens on the Leica is awesome with its 2.8 aperture throughout the 25 to 600 range. Even set on automatic, birds are frozen in flight and the sun in the last stages of sunset is huge in the viewfinder! The skin tones are as good as I could ask for with no color bleeding from strong colors that might be adjacent to the skin. It weighs next to nothing - especially in comparison to my big DSLRs with the bag full of lenses required to do what this little wonder will do. I have already recommended the camera to family and friends.

I ordered V-LUX4 because I wanted to test 600mm/f2.8. But, AF system of V-LUX4 was very poor. I pushed a shutter button, then focusing action was started, then focusing action was not completed, then shutter chance was gone. It was hard to get shutter chance. So, I was sold V-LUX4 on the day after delivery day. Body is plastic. Building quality is so so. This camera is same as Panasonic's FZ-200. Major difference is only image processing engine and branding badge of "LEICA". Price of V-LUX4 is almost 2 times higher than FZ-200. But quality (satisfaction) is not so higher than FZ-200.
If you are not LEICA mania, you shouldn't get V-LUX4. It's camera only for LEICA mania.

Comments about Leica V-LUX 4 Digital Camera:

After I had a Cannon, Nikon and the Alpha from Sony I got the V-Lux 4. (made in Japan)
It is the most universal camera today. The Zoom up to 600 MM is incredible. The 2 or 12 or 50 shots per second I use to shoot birds and insects flying (mostly 12 f/s). The extreme fast readiness and auto zoom is remarkable. You can select any color e.g. red and all other colors will show in grey scales or only yellow or only blue etc..
Impressive is also that the camera find its own program on red A you point to a face it will find automatically the portrait program, or point to landscape it will find automatically the land scape program or follow a bird in the air it will go on TRACKING etc...
the swivel back screen allows you to take pictures (e.g. Mushrooms)you do not have to lay on the ground.
The main SHORTFALL is: the 12 MP only. If you like to take extreme MACRO pictures (the eye of a fly) you would like to have a higher resolution to crop and still have sharp picture!
I have a page on FACEBOOK RUDI RUDLAFF -click on PHOTOS then on ALBUMS in 2014 and 2015 are a lot of flying birds and Insects as well as in 2015 Florida with a lot of DRAGON FLYS

Comments about Leica V-LUX 4 Digital Camera:

I got my V-Lux 4 from B&H Used department. It came to me like new in the box. I belong to a photography club and we submit photos each month for peer reviews. The first set of photos I took with this camera resulted in two photos being chosen as "Photo of the Month". I do mostly wildlife, flowers, bugs and landscapes and this camera has taken awesome pics every time. The color saturation is amazing, and the zoom lens has a great range. Best of all is the constant 2.8 aperture. This has solved my previous issues with low light conditions, so far. I am very pleased overall.

I have never enjoyed carrying a heavy camera and lenses. The V-Lux is light and the zoom lens I use very often. The results even at a highly zoomed photo (braced) turned out great. The versatility and speed using the camera is excellent.

Comments about Leica V-LUX 4 Digital Camera:

After some initial focusing problems which were speedily corrected thanks to B&H excellent technical service department this is certainly the best "point and shoot" that I have ever owned. I mainly use Nikon DSLRs (D7100, D610) with Nikon 80 - 400 zoom and Nikon 300 mm f/2.8 (with teleconverters) for wildlife and have had some surprisingly good results with the Leica. The only problem that I have encountered has been in very contrasty situations (e.g. white bird against dark background) otherwise I am very happy with it.

Comments about Leica V-LUX 4 Digital Camera:

I own several Nikon DSLRs along with a host of macro, wide, normal and super telephoto lenses. I always keep a point and shoot camera with me for that time when you happen upon a great shot and don't have all of your gear ready or available. I have used Canon P&S cameras for this purpose.

If I'm shooting for an enlarged display shot, the DSLRs are the tools. However for normal size photos and almost all other situations where carrying around a large bag of equipment is not wanted, this is the way to go. I was shooting JPG + Raw formats jointly just like my D7000.

I was turned on to this camera by my cousin a year ago who is a professional award winning photographer. The shots were outstanding in color rendition and resolution particularly in super telephoto. She has retired all of her DSLR and SLRs as she now shoots for fun. We were in Alaska shooting wildlife and I dare say because of the readiness of this camera vs. the time to ready my DSLRs, she got shots that I missed.

The shutter lag is as responsive as any of my DSLRs and not anything at all similar to other point shoot cameras I have. For me, this is an absolute major feature that any camera needs to have and the Leica is outstanding. The only things I would like to have seen on this camera that don't exist are a GPS, electronic cable release and bulb setting. The max time setting is 8 seconds. Since I do nighttime sky photography, this may be an issue but I haven't tried it yet.

I generally don't take video but I played with this the other day and it was remarkably simple and focus tracking was very good. It also has a wind cut feature so the noise from the wind blowing was significantly reduced. Since the wind on the beach was blowing 20+ mph, that was a very nice surprise.

In some reviews I've read that some people have mentioned it seems cheaply made because it is plastic. It's a lightweight material to keep the weight down and that it does. It weighs just over one pound. It is not cheaply made at all. I believe the material is probably a high strength synthetic plastic and/or graphite. I have looked but can't tell. If people think that metallic items are weak, they should really try to avoid flying in modern airplanes as the amount of metal has been dramatically reduced due to technological advances. This is a well built lightweight technologically advanced camera that does everything it claims to without any fault.

Comments about Leica V-LUX 4 Digital Camera:

Thanks to B&H for telling me about (and selling) this great digital camera. I love my Nikon D7000 and Nikon Coolpix 8800, but the Leica v-lux 4 is fantastic. Great zoom, great sharpness and color, so versatile and convenient. Will use it 90% of the time for all kinds of photographs (and some video to).

Comments about Leica V-LUX 4 Digital Camera:

Ok - I won't go into technical detail about operations here, and I've only had the camera briefly, but initial impressions can be very useful.

I'm using this mainly for travel photography, so I hike and drive and do nature-type shooting, including wildlife and birds, landscapes, etc. Outdoor stuff.

First impressions: I like it! It's compact, feels pretty well-engineered, it has a fantastic zoom range, the lens accepts standard 52mm filters (unlike most compact digital cameras), so I can put on a protective skylight filter or a polarizer and not have to mess with an adaptor tube. The controls are well-layed out overall and familiar to anyone who's used a compact digital camera before. It seems to take great quality photos, it turns on in a flash, focuses super-fast and shoots well in really low light.

On the nitpicky side: I threw the lens cap away and bought one I could actually grab hold of without it shooting across the room. Very irritating. The camera isn't made of rock - it's quite light, and I wouldn't expect it would survive a significant fall on concrete or an elephant stepping on it, but not many modern cameras would. I find the LCD screen a bit hard to grab to swing out. The controls can feel a bit cramped, and the lens can retract on your finger when the supplied lens hood is attached on the lens barrel for storage.

That's about it for ergonomic gripes so far. Pretty minor overall, but I haven't been traveling and living with the camera yet. But nothing really bothers me that's not hugely outweighed by the incredible convenience of having a pro-quality camera with this feature set (the amazing zoom and macro features) all in one little package.

In case you can't tell, what I'm really excited about is that, instead of my monster backpack with 3 heavy lenses and heavy camera body and accessories, I can carry this one little thing, and still get great photos. Wear it on a plane, hike with it, take it all around, no lens change hassles...kinda a no-brainer. I'll just refrain from hammering nails with it.

Comments about Leica V-LUX 4 Digital Camera:

I needed a camera that I could reach out with and this is the one. Everything about it is intuitive. Once I look into the viewfinder I have everything I need at my disposal. The V lux 4 is responsive and fast. Fantastic pictures are coming out of the box with little or no post processing.

I also own the Leica D Lux-6, which I love, and the Canon G15, the Nikon P7700 and 2 Nikon P6000s. They are all great cameras that have their own unique strengths, once you get familiar with them.

Comments about Leica V-LUX 4 Digital Camera:

                      fantastic results.
the functions are a bit quirky to get used to - still learning.
macro is a tad difficult to understand.
scene modes can be selected thru view finder which is a plus and a minus.
but most of all - what really matters are the pictures and they are AMAZING!
the color saturation, and dynamic range beats my canon rebel slr
the lens and image stabilisation is also great.
a bit of a price you pay for the leica brand name - i have not used the counterpart by panasonic to tell you how different they are - but i am sure happy with this camera.

Comments about Leica V-LUX 4 Digital Camera:

I've own a lot of cameras since the film days to digital cameras, from canon SLRs to lately Sony NEX 5n & 6. So far this is the best compact camera I've owned. It is very versatile and easy to use. I don't have to lug on my heavy SLR with heavy long L glasses. It covers from 25mm to 6oomm with constant F/2.8 which is good for low light. Good for wild life photography and nature. The quality of pictures output is so good (second to none?). The V-Lux 4 is lightweight, easy to fit in a very small bag. Ever since I owned this camera I very seldom use my SLR and Sony NEX 5n & 6 already. After all those years spend lugging them I am getting tired & exhausted.Definitely my SLRs and L lenses will go to [*] for good. Bottom line, I love this camera !

Very easy-to-use camera. Gives very good out of focus pictures (Bokeh effect) comparable to SLR if you use the zoom.I'm not a professional user, but I think it lacks a bit of detail in the picture, compared to a real good SLR.Very good zoom and nice colours.Vary satisfied with this camera although a real SLR is slightly better in picture detail.

This camera is absolutely one of the easiest to use for someone who is not a professional. It takes quality pictures and having such a powerful zoom which eliminates changing lenses makes it so convenient and fun. It came highly recommended and it stands up to all I was told about it. I use it for personal pictures. It is lightweight and easy to carry. My biggest problem is accidentally hitting the two buttons just below the thumb plate when I am handling it. I have to be careful or I change things when I was not planning on doing so. Otherwise, this is a terrific camera.

Comments about Leica V-LUX 4 Digital Camera:

I usually shoot with a Nikon D90. But when traveling that camera with or without a long lens attached, screams "tourist." And with family events it can make casual, relaxed events into uncomfortable photo sessions and me into the "photographer" rather than a participant. The V-Lux 4 Leica is lightweight, easy to fit in a very small, inconspicuous bag like the ONA Bowery shoulder bag. The camera has a rotating flip out screen that enables shooting sideways for inconspicuous street shots or shots of kids' antics. But it also has a viewfinder. Auto-focusing is fast and shutter lag,if any, is not noticeable. The zoom lens can shoot at f2.8 throughout the very long zoom range. The wide angle enables very comprehensive macro views even at very close range. And did I mention that the lens is by Leica? Image quality is crisp, color is accurate. Settings allow full manual exposure control,as well as focusing. Downsides? If you use manual focusing, it is with a dial not the lens, and is impractical to use in any changing situation. But this is true of any point and shoot with a manual option. The body is plastic, tough plastic, and nicely lightweight, but you do not want to treat it roughly. Bottom line -- I have tried several point and shoot cameras, but this one is a gem. I am having lots of fun with this little machine.

Comments about Leica V-LUX 4 Digital Camera:

Compared to its "twin", the Panasonic FZ200, the V-Lux seems to be overpriced. Yet, consider you get twice the warrantee, Lightbox, and Leica's proprietary image-processing software (which the FZ200 doesn't use) and you have a better deal in the long run. This is a camera most buyers will be happy to live with for a number of years; carrying the Leica name isn't a bad thing either.
