Sony's Alpha NEX-6 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Zoom Lens (Black) is a compact interchangeable lens camera that delivers high-resolution images using an APS-C size 16.1MP CMOS sensor. In addition to still photos, the NEX-6 records full HD 1920 x 1080 video in 60p, 60i, or cinematic 24p. Whether shooting stills or video, the high-resolution sensor works with the BIONZ processor to create sharp, detailed images.

The camera accepts Alpha NEX E-mount lenses, including normal-range, wide-angle, wide-to-telephoto and portrait-to-long telephoto zooms, mid-range, wide-angle and macro primes, and wide-angle and fisheye converters. Using optional Alpha NEX Camera Mount Adapters, you can also use Alpha A-mount lenses on the camera.

The included 16-50mm Retractable Zoom Lens has an electrically-driven zoom mechanism. With a 35mm equivalent focal length of 24-75mm, it has a normal zoom range allowing you to capture wide-angle shots, portraits, and everything in between. The lens has a maximum aperture of f/3.5 - 5.6, with a minimum aperture of f/22 - 36 for greater depth of field. ED glass and aspherical lens elements correct for curvature of field on the wide-angle end and spherical and chromatic aberration on the telephoto end, improving the accuracy and quality of the entire image. Built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization enables clear, blur-free images and video. The lens measures 2.6 x 1.8" / 6.60 x 4.57 cm (maximum diameter x length), but its retracting mechanism allows it to collapse to only 0.19" (0.48 cm) long for easy storage and transport. The lens has an angle of view of 83-32°, with a maximum magnification of 0.215x.

The camera is equipped with a large 3" (7.6 cm) 921K-pixel TFT LCD monitor. The screen's angle can be adjusted. The LCD also features peaking. The XGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF is an electronic, eye-level through-the-lens viewfinder with a 2359K-pixel resolution and a high contrast ratio.

The NEX-6 has Fast Hybrid Autofocus, a feature commonly found only in DSLRs. It combines phase detection AF for quick response when tracking fast-moving subjects (vital when shooting at up to 10 fps), and contrast-detection for more precision. A further refinement in focusing is Peaking AF display, which makes manual focusing more precise by highlighting the edges that are in focus using a color of your choice (white, red, or yellow).

Wi-Fi capability is built into the NEX-6, and it's also compatible with Sony's PlayMemories camera apps. Using these two features, you'll be able to do things like tether your camera to your smartphone with the ability to see the image on your phone and use your phone to trigger your NEX-6. You can also do time-lapse photography, or transfer photos directly from your NEX-6 to your smartphone (allowing you to share them directly with friends) or immediately upload photos to social media sites like Facebook.

Quick Navi control puts Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual functions at your fingertips, along with many other creative options, giving the NEX-6 a DSLR feeling without the DSLR bulk. A Photo Creativity interface has settings like Background Defocus, Color, Vividness, as well as most Picture Effects that can be easily changed and seen in real time, using the control dial.

The NEX-6 features a six-image layering technology, which quickly takes six photos in low light and combines them into one photo for a sharper picture in Hand-held Twilight mode, and to control blur in Anti-Motion Blur mode. Auto HDR (High Dynamic Range) is also built-in. It automatically takes multiple images of high-contrast scenes and combines them for a picture with improved contrast control. The built-in flash is also useful as a fill light in low-light situations.

The Multi-Interface Shoe on the top of the camera not only allows you to use Sony flashes, it's compatible with Handycam accessories such as microphones for recording high-quality sound, opening up further possibilities for shooting video.

16.1 MP APS-C Size CMOS Image Sensor
The same sensor format that Sony builds into the full-sized α DSLRs. With 13 times the area of the typical point-and-shoot image sensor, APS-C makes the difference between "snapshots" and "photographs," delivering an exceptional combination of high resolution, high sensitivity and pleasingly blurred backgrounds.
E-Mount Lens Compatibility with A-Mount Lens Option
The camera accepts Alpha NEX E-mount lenses, including normal-range, wide-angle, wide-to-telephoto and portrait-to-long telephoto zooms; mid-range, wide-angle and macro primes; and wide-angle and fisheye converters. With optional Alpha NEX Camera Mount Adapters, you can also use Alpha A-mount lenses on the camera
16-50mm Zoom Lens Included
Lens features electrically-driven zoom mechanism, as well as dual-function control ring for both zooming and manual focus. With 35mm equivalent focal length of 24-75mm, lens has normal zoom range allowing you to capture wide-angle shots, portraits, and everything in between. Lens has maximum aperture of f/3.5 - 5.6, with minimum aperture of f/22 - 36 for greater depth of field. It contains 9 total elements in 8 groups, including 1 ED (extra-low dispersion) glass and 4 aspherical lens elements that correct for curvature of field at wide-angle focal lengths and spherical / chromatic aberration at telephoto end. The lens features 7 circular aperture blades, as well. Built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization results in clear, blur-free photos and videos. The lens measures 2.6 x 1.8" / 6.60 x 4.57 cm (maximum diameter x length), but its retracting mechanism allows it to collapse to only 0.19" (0.48 cm) long for easy storage and transport. The lens has an angle of view of 83-32° and a maximum magnification 0.215x. It contains an internal stepping motor, as well as a distance encoder
Fast Hybrid AF
Sony's advanced Fast Hybrid AF combines two technologies for improved performance: Phase detection AF for quick response that is ideal when tracking fast-moving subjects and contrast-detection AF for added precision. An appropriate match that delivers optimal Auto Focus for fast, precise focusing in any scene. Phase-detection AF has 99 points, while contrast-detection AF has 25 points. AF Illuminator: Built-in, LED type, with a range of approx. 1-9.8' / 0.3-3.0 m (with E PZ16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS attached). AF micro adjustment with LA-EA2 (sold separately)

Advanced Control Dial
Mode control dial and Quick Navi assure quick and intuitive operation comparable to a DSLR's. Control dial and Fn (function) button combine to facilitate speed in getting the shot.
Full HD Movies at 60p/60i/24p
Capture HD movies in your choice of smooth 60p, standard 60i or cinematic 24p, all at full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution. AVCHD codec delivers exceptional picture quality. MP4 codec offers smaller files for easier upload to the web.
Multi-Interface Shoe
Unlike conventional cameras, the NEX-6 features a newly developed Multi-Interface Shoe that expands compatibility with Handycam accessories, thus raising the potential for photo/movie shooting.
Built-in GN6 Pop-up Flash
A built-in Guide Number 6 flash is located on top of the camera. It is ideal for shooting in dimly lit settings and can be used as a fill flash when shooting in bright sunshine or to produce catch lights in portraits. Each is unique and each gives you a way to make your images and videos pop.
Photo Creativity Interface
The Photo Creativity interface enables you to easily enjoy the creative expression of SLR-quality digital imaging without the complicated settings. Changes can be made using the control dial with results seen in real time on the LCD. Settings include: Background Defocus, Brightness, Color, Vividness and most Picture Effects.
Auto Portrait Framing
Simply photograph a person and Auto Portrait Framing will save an additional, optimally framed image in portrait or landscape orientation. Combining Face Detection and By Pixel Super Resolution technologies with rule of thirds, Auto Portrait Framing provides composed and appealingly balanced full resolution portraits.
Clear Image Zoom
Utilizing Sony's exclusive By Pixel Super Resolution Technology, Clear Image Zoom increases the effective focal length of your lens up to 2x by digitally magnifying the center of your image with minimal degradation. It virtually doubles the effective focal length of whatever lens you're using providing greater shooting flexibility.
Digital Zoom
Approx. 4x (still images and movies)
Convenient USB Charging
Easily recharge the camera via USB charging. Simply connect the bundled USB cable and recharge the battery without removing it from the camera, either via AC outlet or PC connection.
Auto HDR Built Into Camera
High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography captures more scene contrast than a single exposure can handle by combining the best highlight detail from one shot and the best shadow detail from another for one incredible shot. Until recently, you needed a computer and editing software. Sony builds HDR in. Handles severe backlighting and other high-contrast scenes. (Recommended for still subjects.). Auto Exposure Difference, Exposure difference Level (1.0-6.0 EV at 1.0 EV step), off
6-Image Layering
The camera leverages the large, APS-C image sensor and captures six images in a fraction of a second. The camera then combines the data from the 6 different images up to ISO 25600 to create a single image. This method is used to control blur in Anti-Motion Blur mode or to get cleaner, sharper nighttime pictures in Hand-held Twilight mode.
Sweep Panorama Technology
Capture expansive landscapes automatically. Press the shutter, sweep vertically or horizontally. The camera does the rest, continuously shooting images and stitching them together for up to a 23MP image size. The camera is capable of up to a 202° sweep angle (16mm focal length).
Anti-Motion Blur Mode
Corrects for subject movement to capture clean, sharp images in low light. The camera leverages the large, APS-C image sensor and captures six images in a fraction of a second. Combining the data from all six creates a single image that minimizes subject blur.
Intelligent Auto Focus
Pre-focuses as you compose the shot, further reducing focusing time to a bare minimum.
Peaking AF Display
The Peaking AF display makes precise manual focusing much easier by highlighting the edges that are in focus in your choice of three colors (white, red, or yellow). This is especially helpful during macro or portrait photography where your focal plane can make or break your shot.
Manual Focus Assist
Greatly magnifies the viewfinder image (4.8x, 9.6x) when you touch the focus ring, making it easy to get razor-sharp images. Works with E-mount lenses only.
Enhanced Tracking Focus
Tracking Focus continuously tracks a user-designated subject and is now more effective at tracking people. If the subject turns away from the camera, face-detection tracking automatically switches to subject tracking and continues tracking.
Face Detection Technology
The camera can automatically detect up to eight individual faces and adjust focus, exposure, white balance and flash to help deliver crisp, properly lit images of family and friends. It can prioritize children or adults.
Smile Shutter Technology
Captures a smile the moment it happens. Simply select the Smile Shutter mode and the camera takes the picture automatically. You can prioritize children or adults and adjust the smile sensitivity.
D-Range Optimizer (DRO)
Improves results with backlit subjects and recovers details hidden in shadows. Settings include Auto Level with a choice of five operating levels and Off.
Exposure Compensation
Still images: +/- 3 EV in 1/3EV steps; Movies: +/- 2 EV in 1/3EV steps
Exposure Bracketing
With 1/3, 2/3, 1, 2, 3EV increments; 3 frames
Noise Reduction
Long Exposure NR: (On/Off, available at shutter speeds longer than 1 second). High ISO NR: (High/Normal/Low)
Creative Styles (6 Modes)
Control how the camera processes your images with six finishing styles: Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Sunset and B&W (Contrast (-3 to +3 steps)). You can even fine-tune contrast, saturation (-3 to +3 steps), and sharpness (-3 to +3 steps) to your personal taste.
PhotoTV HD Compatibility
Optimizes compatible BRAVIA televisions for flattering display of digital pictures.
MS Duo/ SD Slot
For cost-effective, convenient storage and sharing of your images, the camera accepts Memory Stick PRO Duo/Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo and SD/SDHC/SDXC media (Class 4 or higher recommended). Memory card is required (sold separately).
Anti-Dust Sensor
Anti-Dust Technology helps keep the CMOS sensor clean, resulting in consistently clear pictures. First a static-free coating on the sensor's low-pass filter helps repel dust. Then vibration automatically dislodges dust from the sensor.

I was debating for over a month on an ILC, reading reviews and blogs everyday. I was so close to going for the OMD-EM5 but once I held the NEX 6 in my hands.... there was no going back. The camera felt sturdy in my hands and the buttons/ dials were all in the right size and place for an easy operation. The other two main reasons that favored the NEX 6 were..
    - Hybrid autofocus system
    - The great reviews I had read about its big brother NEX - 7 and that fact that it had most of its capabilities except the resolution and the extra dial.

Having used the camera for over 2 weeks now, I am starting to really enjoy it. I wanted a camera for practicing street photography and the compact size with the retractable lens make it really easy to carry around. The design is nice and the camera feels really solid in the hand. The controls are also easy to reach and in the right places, with the main dial just under the mode dial and the second dial next to the screen. Some of the things that I really like about the camera:

    - Nice image quality. The color representation was great and generally the pictures feel good out of the camera.

    - Fast autofocus. This is one of my major concerns and I found that in good light, the autofocus is very fast with the hybrid autofocus helping in tracking moving subjects but in low light, the autofocus was still struggling.

    - Fantastic EVF. I think there is enough ground covered on this area as the NEX 6 sports that same groundbreaking technology in EVF as the NEX 7.

    - Love the sweep panaroma mode. Love it love it love it.

    - Good performance at high ISOs. I got decent result till ISO 3200... over that noise really started showing up.

    - The kit lens is nice and I love the fact that its retractable and make the camera easy to carry around. But this also makes the camera a little slow to start up. The dual purpose of the focus ring is really interesting with the focus ring used to zoom in autofocus mode and in manual focus mode for focusing. The peaking feature really helps in manual focusing! Also the power zoom lens should help during video shooting, however I am yet to try it.

    - The built in WiFi and apps are interesting. However there are limited apps available and the good ones are not free! The ability to capture images using smartphone over WiFi is nice but there are limited options... with the ability to adjust exposure compensation only.

The main drawbacks that I could come up in my short experience with this camera are:

    - The battery needs to be charged in body and the camera cannot be used while the battery is being charged. Also the indicator showing that the battery is charging is really small and hardly visible. So you definitely need a separate charger and an additional battery.

    - There is no touch screen... this is really something that Sony should be thinking about. The reason I was so pulled towards the OM-D E-M5 was the fact that I could focus and snap the image using the touch screen. Also the user interface is much quicker and easier using the touch screen.

    - Only one dial is usable in the P/A/S mode. This is a huge drawback that I feel can be corrected in the next firmware upgrade. The second control dial next to the screen can be used in M mode but not in all other modes. It can only be used when exposure compensation or ISO is selected.

    - The camera is slow to respond when woken up from the power saving mode.

    - Lastly limited lens selection in the e-mount category.

I bought this camera after reading glowing reviews. The price from B&H was terrific as the newer model alpha 6000 was released.
I found the camera to be difficult to use. The menus were complicated and the controls are small. So while I'm turning a small wheel to get to a menu, my finger invariable touched the button in the center when I didn't want it to be touched, very annoying. I found the camera to be very complex and not user friendly.
I took shots around my house and the photos were not sharp. In addition doorways and straight lines were bowed out, pincushion distortion was extreme.
If you like this camera, I would purchase the body and get a better Sony lens, not the kit lens that comes with the body.
My feeling is that this camera is not a camera "for the moment" but perhaps one where shots need to be set up and fiddling with menus doesn't bother you.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-6 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Zoom Lens (Black):

I bought this camera to use for travel photography as an amateur - I was looking at portability, cost, and image quality as my main factors. The NEX-6 meets and exceeds all my needs. I recently got more into videography and this works for that too (again, at an amateur level), but primarily it's good for taking photos in RAW. The few downsides are accessibility of settings/menu (there are 3 softkeys + 2 dials + 1 wheel, I think, and sometimes they're just not as manual/hands-on/quick as I'd like them to be but then again I'm still getting a feel for the camera and this is my personal preference) and short battery life.

    Better than a DSLR

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-6 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Zoom Lens (Black):

This camera has been great. We've had a Canon T1i for the last 4 years and the quality was always excellent. However, portability was often an issue that would cause us to leave our DSLR hike in favor of an iPhone.

The Sony NEX-6 strikes the perfect balance between image quality and portability. This camera has excellent build quality and feels like it will last for many years. A

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-6 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Zoom Lens (Black):

I owned NEX-3 and had very good experience. When I lose mine, I replace with NEX-6. It is good for a person like me that do not want a big size like DSLR and need to have good picture quality with just a press of the button. The digital view finder is good for day time but it burns extra power. The video shooting also burns a lot of power and you lose digital zoom. Please buy a spare battery. You will need it. The auto ISO is good. It is easy to shoot good in door pictures when there is no enough light. The LCD screen has very good quality except that it is not touch screen. Excellent camera with good price from B&H.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-6 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Zoom Lens (Black):

Use this as my "carry around" camera. For its size it does everything, and more, than I need.

It's great that I can connect it to my Alpha Gear and use practically all the features that equipment affords.

If you have a good collection of A mount lenses(as I do) I would recommend one of Sony's outstanding adapters.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-6 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Zoom Lens (Black):

The Nex takes great pics...the Zoom Kit lens is ok for all around shooting.I also purchased the E-mount OSS 35mm 1.8 from B&H...night time and low light were awesome with this combo. But unfortunately I was not able to use my Alpha 42 flash with this camera---they changed the mount on the NEX...also all my Alpha lens for my Sony A55 are not OSS (stabilized) as the A55 body is the stabilizing control...so none of my Alpha lens would be stabilized, nor any of my older Minolta glass either..I always shoot hand held, and at my age I must have stabilized len's or camera. This is why I bought the NEX in the first place, and had to return to B&H for this reason...both the lens and NEX 6 with kit lens...Had I not owned the Alpha DSLR with many lens already I would have been delighted to keep the NEX 6 as my primary DSLR mirrorless camera...It really is an amazing camera...Oh one negative...the menu system is just plain awful compared to the other cameras I own...B&H rocks...great customer service...# 1

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-6 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Zoom Lens (Black):

I guess that maybe someone who really knows photography and can set their own settings might like this camera for the size and feel of it. But if you're using Auto, the photos are not good! Most of them were overexposed, mostly outdoors, but also indoors. If it is compensating for low light, then it's way off. I did get a few decent indoor shots, but had to add shadow to them to compensate for the overexposure.

The worst feature of all is the review screen. It tells you that this is a 3" screen, but there is a frame around it so there is only about 2 1/2" of viewing area. The size of the review is very small and you have to push the plus + button to see a larger version and then spin the wheel to make it small enough to see the whole thing. Ridiculous! Sorry, but I had to return it.

It is a great camera for everyday use, it is an alternative to my full frame Nikon SLR system. Alpha is compact, loaded with features, high-ISO image quality are the main reasons I purchased this camera. The kit lens is ok, and I won't complain too much for its size.

The NEX-6 is a great little camera. I no longer want to lug +/-25 pounds of camera gear with me when I shoot and the Mirrorless Digital Camera is the solution. Every bit as good as my SLR and larger format cameras.

Used basically as a walk around camera, and main unit when I don't want to lug the big rig.

Small, light and very portable, includes expansion potential or leave as kit. Adaptors are available to use the above mentioned "big rig" lenses if need be.

Would like touch screen on this model.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-6 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Zoom Lens (Black):

I made this camera my first "serious" photography purchase. After doing some research, I decided I wanted a mirrorless system over the traditional DSLRs. Considering my job requires me to move around a lot throughout the day while shooting, something smaller and lighter was a must. I couldn't be more pleased with the NEX-6. I constantly come away impressed at the camera's ability take impressive shots. While the menus can take a while to get used to, it wasn't long before I was able to navigate with ease; the ability to transfer photos to my iPhone via Wi-Fi is a life-saver. The EVF is an added bonus that makes the camera a joy to use. While it may now be outclassed by the A6000, this camera is no slouch when it comes to raw image quality.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-6 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Zoom Lens (Black):

As an amateur and semi-pro photographer, I spent time with a Rolleiflex 3.5, and Nikormat with f2.5 105mm Nikkor. In the digital age, I drifted to point and shoot both pocket size and superzoom. The NEX 6 is an amazing step up in technology! Sharpness, dynamic range, features...it has it all. Start by using its smart modes, then customize, then really dig in to the layered features. I cannot say enough about this package! The SD card insert is a bit fiddly, but no big deal. Buy this camera and take weight off of your hands, and be creative.

This is a follow up to my original review of 5/18/2014 after having opportunity to use this camera on a trip. I got this camera specifically to have something that was not as heavy as my Canon 5D MK II but also would perform better and provide more control than my Canon point and shoot and iPhone. Though the size and weight are fine, the verdict is still out on whether this camera performs significantly better.

I used this camera during a trip to NYC in several venues: attendance at two receptions in restaurants under mixed lighting, sight seeing in natural light and sunlight. and general photography of some still lives, architectural details and the like. While the camera is more portable than a 5D, it is not so compact as to fit in a coat pocket as another reviewer mentioned. Nor was I pleased with the metering and color/light balance at a reception in a restaurant. Exposure was at least 1 stop off if not more, and color/lightbalance was far too red hued. Nothing that can't be easily corrected in software, but my point and shoot far outperforms this in a smaller package. In landscape situations the camera definitely wins, with its greater control and right on exposure.

The battery life seems very short and the time it takes to charge the battery excessively long. If you are going to use this all day, better take several extra batteries along. Hopefully, there is an external battery charger available as one does not come with the kit. Were I doing a long trip, say to Europe, I'd want to have several extra batteries plus sufficient charging capacity to recharge them all overnight, but taking all that adds weight and bulk, which sort of defeats the purpose.

Based on my experience, I'm downgrading my opinion to 2.5 to 3 stars. I plan to continue to use the camera, but can't fully recommend it as of yet.

I had really high hopes for this camera as I wanted something to be a lighter, more portable substitute for my 70D. I liked these smaller mirrorless cameras and went for the NEX-6 since the A6000 came out so the NEX6 prices dropped.
Build is nice, size if perfect - I was hopeful. But it performed terribly in low light, generated quite grainy photos and the menu and buttons were not user friendly or intuitive. Overall, using it wasn't as pleasant as I find Canons to be. And I just couldn't stomach the very very noisy images I was getting in low-ish light where my Canon would perform fine. I ended up going with a Canon G16 instead. More of a point and shoot, not interchangeable lenses but I am happier with the image quality that I was with the NEX6.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-6 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Zoom Lens (Black):

Great all around camera that serves as a portable substitute for a DSLR. Image quality is great and the focus time is equally good. We were prepared to also buy a prime lens for low light, but this camera seems to to do good enough with the kit lens that we will hold off on it.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-6 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Zoom Lens (Black):

My point-and-shoot and smartphone cameras are not good enough to take indoor low light pictures. I also don't like to carry a big DSLR. Mirrorless camera is designed for the reason. I choose Sony NEX-6 because it has view finder and the price has come down a lot. I am very happy with the product.
