Product Highlights
  • 1/2.3 Back-Illuminated CMOS Image Sensor
  • Full HD 1920x1080 Streaming
  • SD Slot for Full HD Recording
  • Optical 10x Zoom
  • Live Monitoring and Remote Operation
  • Ultra-Quiet Pan/Tilt/Zoom Operation

The JVC GV-LS2 is a live streaming camera that comes complete with high-speed ultra-quiet pan/tilt/zoom operation and can be remotely controllable via tablet, smartphone, or PC. This camera combines the quality offered by a full-fledged camcorder but with the unmanned capabilities of a high-end security camera. And then rolls these features into a compact package with Wi-Fi wireless communication and versatile remote controllability.

At the heart of the GV-LS2 is a 1/2.3" 12.4 megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor capable of 4K2K imaging, and JVC's FALCONBRID high-speed image processing engine, which allows Full HD quality to be maintained even when only part of the entire image is used for lossless image stabilization and pan/tilt. Overall image quality is significantly better than what's delivered by most USB cameras. The GV-LS2 offers 10x optical zoom that assures lossless high-quality close-ups. The zoom capabilities of the GV-LS2 are ideal for streaming images and sound from live events as it allows them to remain unobtrusive. Besides HD streaming, the camera also offers Full HD quality AVCHD video recording onto an inserted memory card.

Built-In WiFi for Live Monitoring and Remote Operation
Built-in Wi-Fi makes wireless streaming and remote operation possible, and allows system expansion by adding a Wi-Fi router for multi-camera control of up to four live streaming cameras. Direct Wi-Fi operation of a single camera is possible without a router or hotspot. In addition to an internal stereo microphone, a MIC input is provided for external microphone connection.
Quick & Quiet Pan/Tilt/Zoom
You'll be amazed when you hear (or actually DON'T hear) this camera pan and tilt. JVC uses DD (Direct Drive) motors to provide near-silent panning/tilting. And it's quick and responsive. Movement range of ±150° laterally and -30° to +40° vertically means you can place it just about anywhere. Optical 10x zoom assures lossless high-quality close-ups.

Comments about JVC GV-LS2 Live Streaming Camera:

Product took over two weeks to figure out, and lots of time on the phone with JVC tech support. (they didn't know much.) If you don't plan on using their proprietary software, then plan on having a lot of problems to address. Drivers do not work on a MAC - probably the biggest con of the product. Once working, it has its quirks, but overall does exactly what we need and does it pretty well.

Comments about JVC GV-LS2 Live Streaming Camera:

I fully followed instructions they provided in order to setup the unit.
I used Safari 5.1.10 on a MacBook Pro only at 10.6.8.
It did a successfull setup without a hitch. Also allowed full iPhone setup.
Directions say you need Internet Explorer on a Windows Machine only, and running IE - version 9 or higher. If you have a MAC and want to try this, just ignore that. It sets up fine. I did it out of spite and fear I bought the wrong camera unit. NOt the case! I am pleasantly surprised. However maybe JVC had updated all their units since late 2013 so maybe I am happy out of ignorance.
Anyway all controls work as advertised. I will not be using their supplied software however, it does need to be PC. But all the rest and inherent capabilities of the unit with the WEB interface, are very nice. Not an HD Superbowl TV camera, but it will help do a function in the education environment.
Neat tool, and much more highly compatible than even the manufacture specified.

Comments about JVC GV-LS2 Live Streaming Camera:

This is a nice, decent quality camera. Goes together in a few minutes and was up and streaming within a half hour. Picture quality is quite nice, and control is good as well.

The only real problem is the h.264 latency. Expect your a/v stream to be 3-4 seconds behind live. This is way out of line with most other quality IP cameras (in a similar price range) which are 300 - 500ms behind. So this is fine to use if it's the only camera, or when doing multi-cam feeds of the same event use all identical JVC cameras. But, mixing and matching with anything else should be avoided.

The M-JPEG preview video has extremely low latency. Which is annoying because the only option for it is SD resolution at 15fps.

Also, the suggestion from the JVC rep in response to other reviews here to use the AV out is a waste of time. The AV out is SD only. If we wanted to wire up an SD camera we woudln't be spending 4X more money on a network HD camera. :)

Another thing to keep in mind. This camera will not stream directly to a CDN. You need to run it thru a PC to ingest the video into a streaming app. Since they're doing MPEG-TS I don't understand why they didn't just provide an option to ship that stream out of the camera as an UDP/RTP push. Between that and the in-camera latency is so high, by time your audience sees the stream it'll be 10 - 15sec behind live. (4s camera to PC, 2-4sec PC encoder, <1s media server buffer, 3-5sec browser buffering).

Comments about JVC GV-LS2 Live Streaming Camera:

I needed to record and stream music performances in an intimate setting, with minimal wiring and visual disturbance, and minimal personnel. This was the only camera that I found that could do all of that. And at an unbeatable price. So it is unique and invaluable for that sole reason.

However, the setup was extremely frustrating and confusing. I am not a profesional audio/video guy, but I'm quite handy with computers and networks. Still, there were some issues that I could only solve with the help of JVC Customer Service (very slow) and an Apple expert friend.

Some important points to keep in mind:
              1) PC-only for the configuration. After configuration, you can control it with an iPhone or iPad or Mac browser. If you want to use the Cam Control driver, it must be on a PC.
              2) Needs Pixelshader 3.0 compatible graphics card in your computer. My 2010 Macbook pro running Bootcamp was not able to run the PC driver because it was one generation too early for the graphics card.
              3) Router must be non-Apple. Must support UPnP, which means I could not route through my Time Capsule. I plugged a Linksys router into the TC, which bypassed the Apple sufficiently to allow the cameras to access the network.
              4) The detailed user guide, available online, is essential. The included basic guide is useless. And there is no reference to a detailed guide in the included guide.
              5) Streaming/recording simultaneously is NOT in HD. You must choose one or the other. We are considering streaming with our current 2 camera setup and buying a second set of 2 cameras that would run on a separate computer only for recording.

              Other good-to-know details:
              1) A 32G SD card will record 3h40m in HD.
              2) There is a 1+ second delay.
              3) The Pan/Tilt chassis is very delicate - one of mine broke during the setup and I sent it in for repairs. Waiting to see if JVC will honor the warranty.
              4) The Cam Controller user guide is also essential. Also only available online.

I'm hooking up external microphones to run into one of the audio jacks. Not yet sure how the sound will be without running through a mixer.

Hopefully there will be other products like this appearing on the market soon. And that the competition will make JVC more attentive to Customer Service.

Comments about JVC GV-LS2 Live Streaming Camera:

I recently purchased a JVC GV-LS2. I wanted to leave a glowing review. I am a physician and often use video to record professional lectures. I have used a JVC GZ-VX700 which I had to hard wire my wireless mic into it because it has no mic imput. The JVC GV-LS2 is absolutely brilliant. It is extremely well made. Absolutely silent operation of motors. Quality of video is superb for its size. The GZ-VX700 has a 1/4" chip with 3 million pixels. This has a 1/2" chip with 12 million pixels!!! The app that controls it has unbelievable functionality. It will control all aspects of the camera while you are recording. For the other reviewers, a very useful piece of information is to download the manual not just for the camera but also for the app called JVC Cam Control. The online manual for the app clears up a lot of trouble. For instance if you want to record video while streaming video there is only one mode you can do this in. This is the "MotionJPEG"

Comments about JVC GV-LS2 Live Streaming Camera:

I purchased it to use it for its intended purpose; streaming. It basically works as stated, but some of the fine print is only found on the box after you make the purchase.

                  Pros:
PTZ - works great from computer, iPad or iPhone.

Software - overall pretty easy to install and setup.

Quality - great for a camera in this price range

                  Cons:
Recording to SD card - You cannot record to an SD card while streaming. You have to choose to record or stream but not both at the same time. This was disappointing for me. I wanted to record as a backup in case my Internet stream went down but found out this is not possible with this camera.
Video stream is delayed - after being processed by the driver on the computer the video stream is about 3 seconds behind "live". For example: I use adobe flash media live encoder to broadcast my video stream. When I pull up this camera in the software, the video stream is about 3 seconds delayed in comparison to what is happening live.
Need to purchase special software to be able to use the audio from the camera - Adobe FMLE does recognize the video stream but cannot recognize the audio format that the camera uses. If you plan on using ustream producer you should have np problem, I have also briefly tested it with wirecast, It also recognizes the video and audio stream. So, plan on putting out some more money if you want to steam online with this camera and use its audio stream. If you want to use a different audio source, like an audio mixer, you will need to find a way to delay that audio to make it line up with this camera.

Overall, I like the idea of this camera, but am disappointed with its recording and audio limitation. I spoke with JVC, and the second level support technician said that this is a new camera and they are still testing things out with it, and that there could changes made in future firmware upgrades. So, here's hoping that they can make some improvements to this camera.

Comments about JVC GV-LS2 Live Streaming Camera:

There is a delay in the A/V stream making it somewhat useless when using the cam with other/different cams (hardware) when using Wirecast and Ustream Producer. The only way you could possibly use this with Wirecast and expect good A/V sync is when using only these cameras and running the audio into the cam via it's mic jack thus making the A/V sync stream run simultaneously. Don't get me wrong the camera is great! The P/T/Z is amazing and if you don't mind the delay, which JVC says is about 1-5 sec (3sec with direct for me) then it makes a perfect monitoring cam. Wish I could use it but for Wirecast and Ustream Producer there is no way! Retailers should be mentioning this in their specifications to avoid lots of returns. I was your Guinea Pig. Your welcome! ~J
