The 35mm f/1.8 OSS Alpha E-mount Prime Lens from Sony is a sharp, prime lens for Sony E-mount cameras, including the Alpha NEX-5R, Alpha NEX-6 and the NEX Handycam camcorders. It is a compact, fixed focal length lens which is equivalent to 52.5mm in 35mm equivalency. A fast maximum aperture of f/1.8 means the lens is ideal for blur-free capture of fast moving subjects and for retaining crisp imaging in low light. A quiet linear motor controls focus while an in-lens stepping motor controls aperture, together they offer smooth and virtually silent lens action, which is ideal for shooting video. Direct Manual Focus is also featured which allows for fine manual focus control and is operable even in autofocus mode. Sony's built-in Optical Image Stabilization system provides approximately 4-stops worth of shake control, making the lens even more functional in low light conditions and great when tracking moving subjects in video.

Improved optics have reduced spherical aberration and provide uniform contrast across the sensor and sharp images even when shooting wide-open at f/1.8 aperture. The circular aperture helps to create smooth and circular bokeh.

Fixed Focal Length, f/1.8 Lens
This compact, large-aperture, prime lens has a focal length of 52.5mm in 35mm equivalency and is approximately 1.75" (45mm) long. It is a bright lens with the capability to handle a wide variety of shooting situations from landscapes and street photography to flattering portraits with beautiful background blur.
Optics
Newly designed optics reduce spherical aberration, delivering detailed sharpness and contrast in the central area of the lens as well as at the periphery. The results are clean, sharp images even when shooting at f/1.8 aperture.
Silent and Smooth Focus
A quiet, high-speed linear motor controls focus while an in-lens stepping motor controls the aperture. Together they provide extremely quiet operation and smooth focusing as well as quiet and fluid aperture control. These motors are ideal for shooting video since they eliminate excessive lens-drive noise.
Direct Manual Focus
This 35mm f/1.8 lens supports DMF (Direct Manual Focus), which enables users to resume manual focusing directly after obtaining focus with AF. This is particularly useful when AF cannot lock onto a subject or continually focuses on an unintended one. It also facilitates fine focusing when shooting portraits with a shallow depth of field.
Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization
The built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization system provides a 4-stop shutter speed advantage, making it significantly easier to achieve crisp, blur-free images and video.

The image quality from this little lens is simply outstanding at all apertures. The sharpness, contrast, and color from the SEL35F18 are simply outstanding. The bokeh is pretty nice, but you have to either get fairly close to your subjects or have a fairly large distance between the objects in the field of view for the bokeh to really pop.

I have not used this lens much indoors, yet, so I cannot say much about this focal length in tight spaces nor how well it works in low light conditions.

Since I have primarily used it outdoors, I'll observe that even at ISO100 on the a6000, there are many times in bright sunlight that the picture is overexposed if taken at f/1.8, and you will have to stop down to f/2.2 or f/2.5.

The physical form factor of this lens is superb, and a great match for the a6000. The combination is very nicely balanced together, and the lens itself is pretty small and unobtrusive. If anything, the petiteness of this combination does not look serious, which I suppose is a plus for the street photographer.

I just got one of these. Been waiting for it for my Nex-7. I was amazed. When I pressed the shutter there was a loud ZICK ZICK noise which had me baffled. I finally tracked it down to the aperture blades. They are stopped down to allow viewing of the depth of field but they jump open to meter and focus. Then they stop back down. ZICK ZICK. Hardly silent. You can hear it easily across the room. As in "SOMEONE TAKING PICTURES OVER HERE!"

Seems to kind of negate the purpose of a nice prime fast lens on such a camera format. It is present in manual, priority and speed modes. In manual it is more of a ZICK CHATTER sound also very non-silent.

Nice format, seems well built, good match to the Nex-7, but a street format camera with a built in buzzer seems ill conceived.

This lens is pricey, but worth it. Takes gorgeous photos in very low light with the Sony Nex-5T. The only lens I use on a regular basis.

I use this with my Sony a6000. It's my go-to lens. It replaced my kit 16-50 mm zoom lens and is much sharper, quicker to focus. Would highly recommend for a first prime lens.

Comments about Sony 35mm f/1.8 OSS Alpha E-mount Prime Lens:

We got this lens just before Halloween for our a6000 and I took it trick-or-treating with the kids (after dark, obviously; typical suburban Halloween, with lighting mostly from people's houses). With the lens wide open and shooting at ISO 16000 or so, I was able to get some pretty decent pictures even without flash; exposure times were on the order of 1/40 or 1/60. At smaller ISOs but longer exposure times I got some nice pictures of the adults in the party; they don't move as fast as the kids.Auto focus in the low light was a bit slower than I would have liked, but I was pretty amazed I managed to get pictures at all. This lens has also been pretty good for evening indoor photography, even in more dimly lit rooms like our dining room. The one con I've encountered is that the shutter "click" on this lens is pretty loud. But that's the case with other lenses I have as well.

This is the glass I purchased immediately with my a6000 body. It's the prime I needed. Fast auto focus on this prime gives me some run and gun capability but is the right focal length for beautiful closeups. I shoot a lot of video and find this lens to be THE factor in achieving great video out of the NEX line of cameras.

As a semi-newbie to photography, I love this prime lens. It's sharp, fast, and produces (to my eye) very please bokeh. I bought this in time for study abroad, and while I personally find it a bit of a pain to change lenses so that I can get wider landscape shots on my kit lens, this lens is great for those times when I want to take portraits of people and of people in front of landmarks. This captured some beautiful photos of my friends and I against certain Berlin landmarks at night during the city's Festival of Lights. Will be using it for a long time, I think!

Needed a ~30mm focal length lens for a general photography. This covers street and some portraits so a very versatile lens. f1.8 gives great bokeh and lowlight performance that other alternatives might not have. The only real competitor for this lens would be the Sigma 30 due to its value, but for a little more, you wouldn't ever need to upgrade in the 30mm range if you bought this lens. Outstanding sharpness and good images!

I'm completely new to the world of mirrorless and DSLR cameras, but I do own the kit lens, this, and the SEL50mmf18 as well. I find myself reaching for this one quite often, as the focal length is fairly versatile, while still producing great bokeh for portraits. Very happy!

The lens performs wonderfully. The IQ is good; the focusing speed is fast; it also focuses quietly, which is good for video (although my standard is low, coming from a Canon 50mm f1.8, which is noisy as hell). The only turnoff is the high price. I compared my copy against an SEL50F18 of my friend's. Here is my take, for whatever it's worth.Pros: 1) smaller and lighter than SEL50F18; 2) The focal length is friendlier to indoor shooting than the 50mm, which is a tad too long on a crop body; 3) focusing seems to be faster on my a6000, but keep in mind that is probably because I didn't update the 50mm's firmware to the latest version. Cons: 1) You can't escape the fact that, for two similarly built lenses, the 50mm is $ cheaper than this one; 2) the 50mm also seems to be a little sharper based on my limited and unscientific testing. I ended up with more in-focus pictures of my one-and-half old daughter with the 50mm.Overall I'm happy with mine, but can only give it 4 star for the comparative disadvantage against the 50mm. But the focal length ultimately won me over.

Comments about Sony 35mm f/1.8 OSS Alpha E-mount Prime Lens:

Comments about Sony 35mm f/1.8 OSS Alpha E-mount Prime Lens:

Just shot a wedding rehearsal in a dimly lit Chapel. Did not want to use a flash to distract the participants. The Sony 35mm f/1.8 put out beautiful pictures. The wedding couple comments on how they look more natural than the profession photographers photos that were taken on the wedding day.

Comments about Sony 35mm f/1.8 OSS Alpha E-mount Prime Lens:

I bought this lens, and used it for a whole and enjoyed it and got some great pictures out of it. However, I ended up returning it because I was using it primarily for indoor shots of my kids and the length of 35mm (FF=52mm) was not wide enough for most of my situations. If you are looking for this focal length though, I would recommend it. (I used it with A6000)

I had bought this with my new A6000, it is a Sharp lens but despite the F1.8, I found it to be a less capable in low light. I am not sure if it is because the glass itself is so small in dia. or something else. The Emount options for lenses , in my opinion, is very limited. I ended returning my new A6000 and all the lenses I had bought.

I was reluctant to buy this because of the price, and when I got it I was thinking if I had made a mistake, after all, how often would I really use it? Anyway, the image quality has won me over. It is really a great lens. Sharp, super fast focus and very fast in low light. Still use the kit lens most often, but this is my goto low light lens.
