A must have lens in the micro 4/3rds bag

About 6 months ago I sold my Canon 5D Mark II and a complement of L glass lenses. Why? Size, weight and the arrival of its replacement--an Olympus OM-D E-M5. I shoot primarily in the outdoors of the upper Midwest, the Lake Superior basin. The weight and features of the Oly OM-D and its complement of lenses made the switch a no brainer.

This Pany zoom replaced my Canon "L" 70-200mm f4.0 lens, and I have not been disappointed. The lens is lightweight and easily fits my small shoulder bag along with the camera and the Oly 12mm and 45mm prime lenses.

I shoot a lot of landscape shots with the 35-100mm zoom range, which may seem an atypical use for a mid-range zoom. However, this zoom range helps to create a great canvas backdrop for isolating the subjects in nature and scenic views.

I have found this zoom lens to be bright and sharp through its entire zoom range. On the Oly OM-D, I turn off the lens image stabilization and rely on the 5-axis OM-D body stabilization (lens and body stabilization are not needed and do not not enhance sharpness). Center sharpness (handheld) throughout its range is fantastic. There is some fall-off at the edges, but nothing excessive.

Autofocusing is very quiet, and manual focusing is smooth and impressive.

In conclusion, this zoom is a micro four-thirds must. Its build quality, zoom range, size and performance have led to my use with a frequency beyond my initial expectations.

Any cons, oh yes, price--but, admittedly worth it for the performance delivered.

Bought this lens to go with the 12-35, which is a very good lens. This was sharp at the center, but never got sharp across the frame at any aperture. Maybe I got a bad sample, but at this price I should not have to do the QC. Returned.

Comments about Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 Lumix G Vario Zoom Lens:

I finally broke down and orderd this lens. When it came I was very impressed by it's build quality, and smooth operation. I wanted a small, portable lens that could be used in relatively low light. This lens fits that perfectly.I immediately tested the lens as I always do, and was really impressed by the image quality. This lens is as good as any zoom lens I've ever owned, and that includes the legendary Olympus 50~200.This little jewel takes a back seat to no one. On the pricey side, but it just proves that you get what you pay for I guess.

Comments about Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 Lumix G Vario Zoom Lens:

As with most of the other Lumix lenses that I own, this one does not disappoint. The versatile focal range, fast focus, wide aperture, image stabilization, and quality build make this a must-have lens for any MFT kit. I use it on the GH3 for still photos and video. I have yet to find a weakness in this lens. I keep this one on one GH3 body, and the equally impressive 12-35 f/2.8 on the other GH3 body for nature and landscape work, providing everything I need.

Comments about Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 Lumix G Vario Zoom Lens:

This fast telephoto zoom offers the highest quality available in M43 for the short to mid telephoto range. It's a pricey lens so you will want a good reason to buy it. If you can leverage the advantages of speed, convenience and superb image quality then the high cost will be worth it. If not, you can buy the Olympus 40-150 or one of the similar Panasonic zooms and spend the other thousand dollars on something else! I own, and use, several lenses within this focal length range but having it all in one lens that is exceptionally sharp and fast allows me to get shots I would otherwise miss. For me, it's a good value.

This lens is excellent wide open and the stabilizer allows it to be handheld for action shots in less light than would otherwise be possible. I use it wide open much of the time. I use this lens on my GH3 and my E-M1 bodies and it performs beautifully on both. In-lens stabilization works well on the GH3 but I find the E-M1's IBIS to be slightly better when I use that body. I always look at lens specs but in the end a really good lens stands out without any need for numbers and this is one of those lenses.

This is a fairly large and heavy lens for M43 but considering the f2.8 aperture, it is actually quite compact. The construction is VERY solid and with its weather sealing it is suitable for demanding professional use. Paired with the Lumix 12-35 f2.8 zoom (or the Olympus 12-40 f2.8 if in-lens IS is not needed) you can cover a lot of photographic situations with a couple of very high quality lenses. I also carry the Lumix 7-14 f4.0 for complete coverage on the wide end. None of these lenses is cheap but they do offer top image quality.

With f/2.8, this lens is an excellent choice for low-level light and expands the range of light conditions for use with this versatile camera. This lens also bridges tht gap between lower focal length lenses and the versatile 100-300 mm lens with its equivalent focal length of 200-600 mm. Great choice as an excellent lens, but rather pricy.

Comments about Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 Lumix G Vario Zoom Lens:

I'm primarily a videographer and I use this lens a lot on concerts, weddings, interviews, and commercial work. It's fast and sharp wide open with nice bokeh. I love the range with the 2x crop factor on my camera (it's an effective 70-200mm lens) The constant aperture is a treat. The construction feels solid. The OIS makes it easy to get sharp, in-focus shots on the go. The sharpness and color on this lens is great. I love the images it makes. I also like that the barrel doesn't extend when I use the zoom. (it's twin, the 12-35mm, which I own, has a barrel that extends when zoomed, but other than that it's nearly identical in quality and usefulness). Just about the only drawback to this lens is it has an infinity focus ring, meaning that the focus ring spins and spins endlessly without any hard stops. This makes it very hard to use with a follow focus for racking focus video shots, or for night sky long exposures (hard to know exactly where infinity focus is when shooting 30 second shutters). However, I knew that going into this deal so it's not a huge disappointment. Overall, it's a valuable lens in my kit and I'd definitely recommend it.

Comments about Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 Lumix G Vario Zoom Lens:

I use my MFT set for casual shooting (i.e. walk-around at amusement parks, family functions, travel, etc...), and the 35-100 is probably the most heavily used lens I own. With its 70-200 35mm comparability and light weight/portability, its flexibility in delivering pretty much any shot I need is superb. It's so easy to carry along mounted on the EM1, or stashed away in my shoulder bag.

It's image quality shouldn't be compared to the Nikon 70-200 VRII...the size, weight, and price are in a different range than this little guy. Apples and oranges. That said, the Panasonic 35-100 delivers reliably crisp images. Wide open, the edges are still very sharp, any softness or light falloff is barely noticeable, if even present at all. Stopped down to f/4 or f/5.6 the image looks perfectly rendered. Nice contrast, no noticeable aberration or diffusion down to f/8, even in high contrast situations.

This lens is an all around great performer. Physically mounts and dismounts with the ease that has made MFT so popular. Opened up, it's plenty fast to get stopped action at sporting events, if you're close enough.

The only slight hitch to this excellent piece of equipment is the price. It's not cheap. But, if it fits within your budget, it is a lens well worth it.

I purchased this lens with the idea of using it occasionally on my GH3 as my main video camera during weddings and needed the reach that this lens offers, now I only want to use my GH3 as my main camera and let my AC-90 serve as a lock off cam. The reach and detail of this lens is outstanding, with the GH3's Ex Tele conv mode you can really get in close when needed and still have a steady shot on a modest tripod. This lens is really making me consider another GH3 and ditching traditional video cameras, it's that good.

Comments about Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 Lumix G Vario Zoom Lens:

This is the best zoom lens I've ever used. I should admit I've never used any pro level zoom lenses such as 70-200mm f2.8 for Nikon or Canon, so I can't compare. I've only used lenses like Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 on Nikon D200 or Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO 14-140mm that came with GH1 or Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-42mm f/3.5 -5.6 that came with GH2 body. None of them come even close to this one.
The Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 is fast to focus. Not only it gives me shalow depth of field when I want, but also has a very nice colors. Photos and videos are very sharp. I was also looking at Olympus 75mm f/1.8 before buying this one, mainly since it has a wider aperture which is good in low light, but then I wouldn't have image stabilization, since I use Panasonic GH2. Lens not only produces beautiful shots, but also feels solid and light. It is also quite small and I like that it zooms inside.

Comments about Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 Lumix G Vario Zoom Lens:

I am a stock and fine art photographer who is in the process of moving from a Nikon D800E system to a smaller, lighter camera system. I have the Olympus E-M5 and am trying several lenses with it to see if this smaller, lighter and more portable system meets my standards and needs for stock and fine art. So far, I'm impressed.

As for this lens, it fully meets my professional expectations. It is sharp wide open and keeps the sharpness and resolution until diffraction limiting sets in about F/11 (slightly) and F/16 (fully, in my view). The center is excellent and the edges hold enough sharpness not to be noticed.

I have used this lens for a variety of subjects and am thoroughly pleased with its performance, size, weight and build quality. Additionally, the focusing is fast and spot on.

Without reservation, I can recommend this lens to anyone using a Micro 4/3 system. I am sure you will be pleased with the technical quality of the images you make with it.

This lens is worth every penny.

Nice and light weight, I can shoot video with this all day.

I use this to record wedding videos on my GH3. It allows me to stand back a little and still have enough room to zoom in. If you are looking to move over to Micro 3/4, this is a must have lens.

Bought this lens to go with the 12-35, which is a very good lens. This was sharp at the center, but never got sharp across the frame at any aperture. Maybe I got a bad sample, but at this price I should not have to do the QC. Returned.

I used this lens at a wedding last week and it was great!

It is very light weight which lets you shoot all day without getting tired from lugging it around.

The picture quality rivals that of the Canon 70-200 which is the same focal length for this sensor size. But with the smaller size, it has quickly become my favorite lens.

Comments about Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 Lumix G Vario Zoom Lens:

Recently purchased this lens for a business/personal trip to South Africa. Didn't want to take my big Nikon lens, since the trip was mostly business. Got this lens for my Olympus OM-D. I was blown away with the image quality, focus speed, and size.
