This STYLUS XZ-2 iHS Digital Camera (Black) from Olympus is a compact camera that produces 12MP photos and Full HD 1080p video with its 1/1.7" backside illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor. It's equipped with a wide-angle-to-telephoto 27-108mm (35mm equivalent) 4x optical zoom lens, with a fast aperture of f/1.8-2.5 for clear, detailed shots in low-light conditions. Using the 3.0" swiveling touchscreen with a 910k-dot resolution, you can compose and shoot photos with the tap of your finger, knowing that the dual image stabilization technology will keep your images clear and sharp.

Olympus' iHS Technology combines the BSI CMOS sensor with the XZ-2's TruePic VI Image Processor to deliver improved image quality, response time, and intelligent functions. Watch as the Track AF easily follows your subject throughout the frame. The camera's Dual image stabilization (IS) technology, a combination of high ISO sensitivity and sensor-shift IS, implements the best settings for any given scene so you don't end up with image blur. The XZ-2 employs a fast and bright f/1.8-2.5 i.ZUIKO lens and high ISO sensitivity up to 6400, both of which enable clear, detailed image capture under low-light conditions.

For more control over your images, the XZ-2 has a built-in mode dial and the ability to shoot images in RAW format. The mode dial allows you to quickly switch as your situation changes without having to navigate camera menus or change individual settings. Shooting RAW images allows you to capture, view and edit uncompressed, detail-rich files using editing software rather than letting the camera do it.

Eleven in-camera art filters give you creative options for your work, while the panorama mode allows you to capture ultra wide-angle vistas by simply shooting three pictures in succession as you slowly sweep the camera across the scene - no tripod required. The built-in accessory port allows you to attach optional flashes, lights, microphones and viewfinders.

12MP Resolution BSI 1/1.7" CMOS Sensor
The XZ-2 uses a large 1/1.7" 12MP resolution BSI-CMOS image sensor that provides enhanced low light performance and image quality over its predecessor. Both the increase from 10 to 12MP, and the addition of backside illumination (BSI), results in an extended dynamic range and increase in maximum ISO sensitivity to 12800.
27-108mm f/1.8-2.5 i.ZUIKO DIGITAL Lens (35mm Equivalent)
The i.ZUIKO DIGITAL wide-angle-to-telephoto lens is a compact version of the Olympus ZUIKO DIGITAL interchangeable lenses, and is designed specifically for compact cameras like the XZ-2. The i.ZUIKO DIGITAL lens enables light to travel in a near-straight path to the image sensor in order to optimize optical performance. With a maximum aperture of f/1.8 at 27mm and f/2.5 at 108mm, this bright lens delivers similar image quality to that of the much larger ZUIKO DIGITAL DSLR lenses, giving you the benefit of great low-light performance, as well as less weight. Having a wide f/1.8 aperture also makes it possible to shoot pictures with more background blur (bokeh), which is usually difficult with small point & shoot cameras. This effect is especially apparent in portrait and macro shots with a subject relatively far from the background. A hybrid control ring built around the lens enables you to easily assign function settings to your preferences and switch between analog and digital operation. Use this ring for focusing or zooming, as well as changing exposure-related settings quickly and easily. The ring enables fine-tune focusing in macro, composition selection when shooting, and exposure adjustment--all without taking your eyes off your subject.
3.0" Swiveling Touchscreen LCD Display
Not only does the XZ-2 have a 3.0" touchscreen display, but the LCD also swivels - flipping out from the camera to provide better viewing angles while shooting. It tilts up to 80° and down to 50°. From shooting low to the ground, to high above your head, you can see everything your XZ-2 sees by simply moving the screen where you want it. The greatest benefit of having a touchscreen is that you can accurately use tap-shooting and touch playback controls to add another dimension to how you shoot and navigate the camera's menus. Touch controls include Touch shutter release, Touch enlargement, Touch Live Guide, AF area selection, Frame advance/backward, Enlargement playback, and Touch Super Control Panel. Brightness and color temperature are both adjustable ±7 levels. For color setting, Vivid or Natural can be selected.
Olympus iHS Technology
The XZ-2 uses Olympus' iHS technology for enhanced picture quality and faster camera response time. It combines the TruePic VI image processor with the backside illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor, for high image quality and processing speed while keeping noise levels low.
TruePic VI Image Processor
The camera's high-resolution image quality is supported by the TruePic VI image processor, as it renders images similar to what your eyes see, and is faster than the previous versions of TruePic processors. Fine Detail Processing minimizes loss of resolution while preventing false colors or moiré. Real Color Technology accurately reproduces rich gradation of colors and Advanced Gradation Auto prevents colors from being washed out in highlights and being darkened in shadows.
Dual IS Image Stabilization
Using a combination of high ISO sensitivity and sensor-shift image stabilization, the XZ-2 detects motion during shooting and reduces camera shake and image blur, helping you capture sharp images
Full HD 1080p Video Recording
Record videos in Full HD 1920x1080 or 1280x720 (16:9), both at 30fps, with an 18Mbps bit rate for 1080 and a 9Mbps bit rate for 720. You can also record at 30fps Recording can begin instantly with the press of a single dedicated Movie button so you'll never miss that critical moment. The Dual IS image stabilization also stabilizes the image during movie shooting, so you can walk down the street without getting shaky videos. The One Push Teleconverter function magnifies your video up to 2x. Plug an optional HDMI cable into the micro HDMI port on the camera to view your videos on an HDTV.
Audio Recording
Recording is in WAV format: Stereo linear PCM/16-bit, 48kHz sampling frequency. Microphone features Wind Noise Reduction and enables audio dubbing for still pictures (up to 30 sec). Maximum recording time for a picture with sound is 4 sec; for a movie, it depends upon video recording time.
RAW Format Shooting
In addition to the standard JPEG format, one can use the RAW data format for more convenient picture retouching after shooting. The RAW data can be processed on a PC with the provided Olympus software, or in the camera itself.
Auto and Manual Focus
Focus modes: Single AF (S-AF), Super Macro Mode, Continuous AF (C-AF), AF tracking (C-AF + TR), and Manual Focus (MF). Face priority AF and Eye Detect AF are available. There is also an AF Illuminator available. Manual Focus Assist: Live view image is magnified when the Control ring is rotated
Built-In Flash
The pop-up flash illuminates subjects in low-light situations, reduces red-eye and fills in dark areas. The flash's color temperature is 5500 +/- 400K. The camera also features an accessory port and a hot shoe for optional external flashes, which can be controlled by the built-in flash. External flash control modes include TTL Auto, Auto, or Manual. You can also control off-camera flashes wirelessly, in 4 groups with 4 channels. Compatible external flashes include FL-50R, FL-36R, FL-14, FL-300R, and FL-600R.

I'm writing this review after having conducted an exhaustive search for the best high end point and shoot. The cameras I tested were the Olympus XZ-2, the Nikon P7700, the Sony RX100 and the Canon G15.It was a very close call between the P7700 and the XZ-2.What clinched it for me was the color accuracy of the XZ-2.It does a better job on skin tones. (Better than any of the other cameras)When the Olympus gets an accurate focus lock on, the clarity is stunning. It does occasionally miss that perfect focus though. The Nikon hit it more consistently. The RX 100 is getting a lot of favorable reviews and it was impressive. But it didn't seem sharper than the XZ-2 and it's color accuracy was not better than the Olympus either. I preferred the look of macro shots from the XZ-2.I did a comparison with the XZ-2 and my Canon 5D Mark II.Yes the Mark II is significantly better. But then it costs more with the set up I use.Overall the XZ-2 is a great camera.I'm very pleased with it. And Im very picky.

I bought this camera based upon good reviews and for it's underwater case as well as it's known durability. The design of the touch screen however is very poor. The screen can not be retracted or protected unless you first buy plastic screen overlays. Without it you can't breathe on it without it scratching. Never lay camera on it's back, in your pocket or around your neck, anything causes damage.

Comments about Olympus STYLUS XZ-2 iHS Digital Camera (Black):

Seems like this is a solid camera loaded with features. It has cool old school look but looks also up to date with it's design. I like the touch screen and the ability to tilt it up and down. Has a shoe for accessories and old school looking very convinient manual focus when needed. The only part I don't like is the only x4 zoom.

Comments about Olympus STYLUS XZ-2 iHS Digital Camera (Black):

I bought this to update my pocket camera. I've been using Canon G series camera for many years and I still like the Canon G platform, particularly the controls, but the image quality, while still quite good, isn't up to the IQ of the Sony RX100 series or this camera. In investigating the XZ2, I found that it produces nearly the same IQ as the Sony RX100 series cameras, despite the much smaller sensor. I would attribute that to the in camera processing and probably a higher quality lens.I investigated every compact I could find info and image tests on and narrowed it down to the Sony RX100 series and the XZ2 based on size to IQ. Everything else in current models was behind these three, except Nikon's competition to the Canon G16, which is a worthy competitor to the Canon, but behind the Sony and XZ2 in IQ. Any of these are worth looking at if you are looking at compacts in this range. You wouldn't go wrong with any of them. However, shooting style, subject, size and control feel will probably make one better than another for an individual choice.Comparing to the Canon G series, I don't like the controls as much on the XZ2. They are usable and manual settings in ASM modes are quite easy to make, but setting ISO and other functions are a bit slower due to having to go to a function menu. However, the camera does allow quite a bit of customizing of the buttons functions and the not quite silent but click stopped lens ring control dial is very nice to have.A nice feature is an instant custom white balance can be assigned to the FN1 button. The XZ2 is not all that compact, being around the same size as the G7 - G12 cameras I was using as my pocket camera. However, it is compact enough to fit in a small case or a large pocket. The Sony RX100 is smaller, but I didn't like the controls as much as the XZ2 or the Canon G's.The fast lens on the XZ2 is a significant advantage over the Sony RX100 m1-2 as it is still a f2.8 at full zoom. The zoom is also a bit longer (quite a bit longer than the RX100 m3). It is nice having a sharp f2.8 100+ mm equivalent on a compact. Some others do, but none I found could match the IQ of the XZ2 (or the Sony). The XZ2 (like the Canon G's) allows closer macro focusing than the Sony RX100. The XZ2 also has a lever on the front to quickly switch to manual focusing. Then the lens control ring can be used to focus. The camera deactivates the click stops of the ring during manual focusing. Very nice. While the screen is very good on the XZ2, I still like a viewfinder and am spoiled by good optical viewfinders on my SLR's and the wonderful EVF on my Sony A7r. The fact that Olympus has excellent external viewfinders for the camera and other models was interesting. I chose to get their best viewfinder, the VF-4. nearly the same resolution as the A7r's viewfinder, though in practice on the XZ2, I don't think it receives quite as much pixel data. Still, it is an excellent viewfinder. While I bought the viewfinder used, this combination still cost far less than the Sony RX100 models. Between the view screen that can be angled up and down and the optional VF-4 that can also be angled up, most any behind the camera view can be accessed, except from the sides or selfies. In other words, any angle I would be using. The downside of the VF-4 viewfinder is its size and the fact it takes up the hot shoe space. This is not really a problem for flash as several external Olympus flashes can be activated by wireless trigger via the internal flash. But the external viewfinder does make the camera far less than pocketable. I had a bit of trouble finding a small case that was just big enough to hold the camera with the viewfinder that had a belt loop. In case anyone needs this, I found the Optech Hipster in Extra-Large works well. It's not as discrete as fitting in your pocket, but it is very discrete compared to any DSLR.I was surprised at the quality of the video, particularly the sound quality this little camera is capable of. I shot some HD video at a concert to test it out. This was a night concert, so lighting was quite contrasty. Exposure is adjustable so I was easily able to get good light on the performers w/o the silly meter telling the camera it should be exposing the black background as gray, like an iPhone does. It addition, the lighting on the lead singer was very bright and the camera still was able to compensate for this, not overexposing the lead. Sound was good at this concert, but I really didn't expect good sound through the little mics on the camera. I was pleasantly surprised to find the sound very good. Normally, I have found I need to record sound with separate mics. At least this time, I didn't, a first in a setting like that.As I mentioned, IQ is quite good. While not DSLR standards, even noise in most circumstances at even 800 ISO was very low. I only noticed image problems with sunset skies. That is when you pick up some grainy artifacts at 8x12 enlargement so I wouldn't expect publication quality scenics. With other subjects, it looks like the XZ2 is capable of producing DSLR quality prints to at least 20" if the loose nut behind the camera does their job correctly. Quite impressive performance for a compact with a sensor roughly the size of sub-mini film. Ergonomically, the camera is easy to hold, despite its small size. It has a built in removable finger grip on the right hand front side and the controls are easy to access without looking too much. The manual exposure controls remind me of the front and back dials on my Canon and Pentax DSLR's. Comfortable and intuitive.Note that battery life is about average for compacts. I get about 250-300 shots per charge, so far.

Comments about Olympus STYLUS XZ-2 iHS Digital Camera (Black):

In line with what many others report, this is a great camera, which can produce very attractive images.I'm writing just to answer the gentleman in Israel or anyone else who's had trouble with focus in low light. The 1.3 firmware update, which the Olympus viewer software will very automatically install for you, makes all the difference there. It will focus on detail your eye has trouble seeing (outside the bright viewfinder), in very dim light.I can't verify about moving grandkids, especially as what constitutes that situation depends on the habits and velocity of the kds, but this update should make low light situations comparable to more brightly lit ones.

Comments about Olympus STYLUS XZ-2 iHS Digital Camera (Black):

I bought the Olympus XZ-2 to be my grab and go camera. This camera can take excellent photos morning, noon and night. Recently at a family picnic this camera was able to catch the fast moving kids in action shots, Dad grilling the food with flash of fire shots and the adults playing dodge ball. Fireworks shots caught were excellent because of the fast burst mode and the fast focus. This camera operates like a mini DSLR. I wish it had a longer zoom reach but my feet have solved that problem. The videos are crystal clear even when handheld.

Comments about Olympus STYLUS XZ-2 iHS Digital Camera (Black):

I wanted this camera for street photography. Everything I read about it indicated it was exactly what I was looking for, and the sample photos were far and away better than the other compacts I was considering. Ignoring the premium price, I placed my order, and within a few days was unpacking my very own XZ-2. The first thing I noticed about the camera was its weight. It felt as heavy as my DSLR, but most of that weight on the left side (as it's used). The right side of the camera is not as thick as the left, even with the screw-on finger grip, and the effect of the camera's design is that the user, during one-hand operation must counter-balance the camera's unevenly distributed weight, while also focusing, and activating the shutter release in a manner that does not produce unwanted camera movement, or result in the the camera/image not being level, or unusual hand fatigue. I considered keeping the camera because the images were so very, very good, but in the end I couldn't justify paying a premium price for a compact I would not likely be comfortable using without both hands. Even so, I'm giving the XZ-2 a 4 Star rating because it would be a phenomenal camera for someone who didn't need one-hand operation.

Comments about Olympus STYLUS XZ-2 iHS Digital Camera (Black):

I purchased this P&S as a complement to my Olympus Micro Four Third Pen EP-2 because they both share Zuiko optics. I wanted to be sure my pictures would have the same accurate color reproduction and overall clarity of subject matter. I'm enjoying all the features of this camera & it's very user friendly if you're already accustomed to using Olympus brand cameras. Menu is easy to learn & navigate. The ergonomics are very good and the build quality is solid. Auto focus is relatively quick & shutter lag is minimal. The quick set up instruction manual is just for a quick set up as the name suggests. I downloaded the Olympus instruction manual from their website and glad I did.
Olympus also offers excellent technical support either by phone or thru their website.
My camera arrived on schedule per B&H's confirmation of my order ship date and it was well packaged. I did have some questions about my camera after delivery and B&H was quick to respond in a very courteous and professional manner.
B&H is a reliable and reputable company.

I bought this camera with portability in mind. I wanted to start a daily photography blog since I've moved to the city to start my college career but simply couldn't bring my DSLR everywhere in addition to all the books I have to carry everyday. The quality of the pictures are great and though it isn't the smallest camera, it's definitely more convenient than my DSLR. I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone looking for a nice camera to bring around at all times.

Despite every attempt to see how this handles from on-line reviews and pictures, on receiving it I discovered to my horror that despite the excellent image quality this camera is *tiny*, as in minuscule, as in I would have to tie my shutter finger into a knot to be able to hit the shutter. I literally found it unusable.

If you have very small hands, this might work well for it certainly is built to a high level of quality.

Comments about Olympus STYLUS XZ-2 iHS Digital Camera (Black):

I got this as an alternative to the OMD. Not that the OMD is bulky (love that camera), but sometimes if I'm on a trip or just driving around I wanted a camera with a good lens/picture quality that was pretty versatile for a variety of shots without carrying extra lenses.

I had the XZ-1 and upgraded to this camera. The XZ-1 was great but the XZ-2 feels more solid, has great features and lens like the 1; like the nice wide app. Also with the hotshoe you can add accessories like a viewfinder.

If you're looking for a camera that takes great pics to carry around instead of a DSLR or mirror less this is a great option.

Comments about Olympus STYLUS XZ-2 iHS Digital Camera (Black):

I previously owned the Canon EOS Rebel T3 camera, which is actually a small-sized DSRL and quite a bounty of lenses, from the Canon L lenses to the Olympus OM lenses (which requires electronic adapter[so-called EMF] to be attched on). I am satisfied on the overall image quality of this APS-C DSLR, however as I frequently take it out for shooting, I found that nothing is sillier than carrying a heavy DSLR and its whole bunch of accessories around on vacation -- that is weary and weird! As a result I start to find a backup compact system.

I first tried Powershot G1X, which is also producted by Canon -- attracted by its large APS-C sensor (only a little bit smaller than Canon's APS-C DSLR, even larger than Olym and Pana's M43 chips) -- and the outcome was nothing but disappointment. I mean, G1X is a great camera itself, but not did I realize it does not fit in my requirement until I really have it in hand. It's big (almost bulky for a compact system, never slim enough for my belt pouch or shirt pocket), the OVF is not efficient, the position of playback button is rediculous (pesonally I'd like to see it just beside the rear controll dial), the optics is just the despair of me -- on telescope end the aperture ends up on annoying 5.8 -- immediately overcomes the advance of a large sensor. Also the macro function is terrible -- it can focus no more than 20cm, even in Wide Macro! Finally I decided to sell it and find another.

And there I found the XZ-2.

After the failure on G1X I renewed my philosophy. Sensor size IS important, but it appears to be nothing without either a satisfying lens or properly designed ergonomics, sometimes even extensibility. XZ-2 passed all the quizzes.

It has a 1/1.7 sensor -- yes it's small, but large enough to hold 12MP up to ISO 400 without any noise with its super fast lens (one of the fastest in its class, only junior to Pana LX7 and Samsung EX2). The ergonomics and controlling is fantastic! Double dial controls, 2 more customizable Fn button and a focusing level in the front nicely fill up the lack of AEL/AFL button on its predecessor, and the hyrid ring is a Masterpiece. Hot shoe and accessory port allow you to customize this camera however you want. And its size -- just right to fit my pouch! Now I can carry it everyday on belt, without a cumbersome camera bag all day around.

It has performanced even better than I expected so far, thank you so much Olympus! You can always concentrate in order for best mixture. Now I am waiting for new M43 bodies (none of currently existing ever meet my demand, especially on price, size and control) so that accessories counld be totally shared with this tiny flagship in point-and-shoot.
