The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens from Olympus is a Micro Four Thirds lens compatible with the PEN series of interchangeable-lens digital cameras. It is a prime lens with a fixed focal length of 60mm (35mm equivalent: 120mm) designed for sharp close-up shooting. The wide, fast f/2.8 maximum aperture creates a shallow depth of field and improves image quality in low-light conditions. The much narrower minimum aperture of f/22 creates greater depth of field and is useful in brighter conditions. The lens' aperture is controlled by a 7-blade circular diaphragm. The maximum reproduction ratio is 1:1, and you can focus as close as 7.4" (18.8 cm).
The lens contains 13 elements in 10 groups, including ED (extra-low dispersion), HR (High Refractive index) and E-HR (Extra-High Refractive index) glass elements, which reduce chromatic aberrations for greater accuracy in your images. The lens accepts filters with a diameter of 46mm.
This macro lens is also Movie & Still Compatible (MSC), meaning its focusing is quiet enough that the sound will not be picked up during video recording. The MSC mechanism is based on a floating-type inner focusing system comprising 3 drive systems resulting in no change to overall lens length during autofocusing. Additionally, the lens features focus limit switching and a shooting distance / magnification indicator window to enhance macro shooting control and precision. The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f/2.8 is also dust- and splash-proof.

I shoot a lot of hand held insect macros, and a significant percentage of these are at 1:1
This lens has displaced my Pan/Leica 45mm because the working distance is greater (really helps as I usually have a Metz 15MS-1 ring flash mounted on the front of the lens) and the the nifty rotary switch on the side of the lens allows much quicker setting to 1:1 than on the Pan/Leice.
Photo quality appears at least on a par with the Pan/Leica.
My only disappointment is that the focus limiting feature does make as much difference as I'd hoped. As best I can time it the full range of autofocus (with lens cap on) with the limiter set to 0.19m to infinity is approx 2.6 seconds and when the limiter is set to 0.19m to 0,4m it is approximately 2.25 seconds. Probably a bit naivety on my part.
Overall - excellent.

Comments about Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:
I picked this up last week and have really fallen in love with this lens. It is very sharp. It is very small and exceptionally light. I also like the optional boyonet hood that Olympus milks its customers for. I like the focul range selector and the fact that the lens is weather/dust sealed.
I have had some trouble focusing in 1:1 mode but thats not the fault of the lens per se. My only real complaint is that the autofocus is slow and results in a bit of hit or miss focus of your subject. This may be the fact it is a macro lens. I usually use the autofocus to get a general focul point then hold my breath and slowly move the camera forward or backwards to get my subject in focus. Occasionally I will fine tune with the manual focus ring. I leave the focus set to S-AF/M on my OMD. The spider shots were taken with one hand on the camera and one hand on a 800 lumen flashlight to light my subject up. Check out some samples below.

Comments about Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:
This lens is a long and skinny, yet small and light weight as usual MFT lenses. A plastic casing doesn't feel too cheap on your hand, but still feels a bit too pricey for what it seems. In my opinion a hood should come with it. The image quality is pretty impressive and it is very sharp. Color may be a little flat. The quality of bokeh is good. It does an excellent job on macro shooting though it gets somewhat frustrating with manual focusing. A tripod may be required for 1:1 macro shooting especially with Panasonic cameras due to lack of image stabilizer.

Comments about Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:
Here I wish to make just two points. First, this is a pro quality lens that is very small and light for its capabilities. I can hang two EM5's around my neck, one with the 12-35mm and the other with this lens, and (1) they don't bang into each other and (2) my neck - not a big one - doesn't tire.
Second, I have to say, spring for the Olympus lens hood. I'd thought a hood is just a commodity and started with the widespread knockoff. It was not made to adequate - useable - tolerances and also didn't slide back like the Oly one does. That hood is too expensive, granted, but it's also really well done.

I've shot with legendary Nikkor Micro lenses from the 105VR to the 70-180 Micro zoom and none of them have given me images the Olympus 60mm has. The 60 is not just sharp, it has fantastic contrast, perfect color reproduction and great autofocusing thanks to the dial on it's side. The 60 is tack sharp even in the far corners!

Amazing detail, that fully utilizes the full capacity of the OMD sensor. It's a joy to look at my images at 100%.I have been using AF which has truly exceeded my expectations... always dead on accurate. The AF limiter makes the focusing relatively fast. I'm a very satisfied customer

Close up macro work. This tiny power house is as sharp as tac.
The only thing I don't like about the lens is coughing up all bucks for
the lens hood but it is a cool hood.

Reviews on line, have this lens as being good, or not so much, depending on who's reviewing it. For the money, it is a great lens and worthy of being in your camera bag. It focuses well, and photographs images in macro mode with ease. It is certainly on par with other Zuiko lenses. The quality and general versatility of this lens is far and above the price. I have many Panasonic and Olympus micro 4/3 lenses, and I like how well this fits into the photography I do. Of course, with all olympus lenses, I wish it came with a lens shade, which is important to keeep flare down.

This is a very sharp and useful lens.I tried it out with the EPl-5,and even using the touch screen shutter release,it focused fast and accurately.Very good contrast, good apparent sharpness.I have the 4/3
f/2 macro,so I thought this might be redundant, but the compact size and unique features of this lens make it a good purchase.(See my review of the lens hood).

Used on the Olympus E-M5;terrific macro lens for micro four-thirds. I don't have the Panny 45 mm but can't imagine that lens would be any sharper than the 60 mm. No IS for the 60 mm, no lens hood, and at this writing no micro four-thirds mount extension tube availability (you'll need an adaptor and four-thirds tube for that), but...
...a light, reasonably solidly built lens that will give you macro images that can be blown up to monstrous sizes without significant loss of quality. Probably does not offer quite the portrait capabilities of the Olympus 50 mm f2.0 in four-thirds mount, but certainly not far behind. Solid but not spectacular auto-focus speed. The lens has its trade-offs as noted, but well worth the cost in my opinion. Fabulous for the insects/flowers crowd!

Comments about Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:
I believe this is the best option for macro photography for m4/3 system regardless the price, and given the price under $ it is a bargain.I am not expert for image quality but comparing to my old Nikkor AF60/2.8 on D300, this produces 1:1 macro with sharper image, and much better bokeh. It produces better portrait picture than my 14-42 kit lens too. It's very well built, the focus ring feels good at hand, and it's weather-proof. The focus speed is decent however don't expect miracle for macro, when shooting 1:1 MF and focus by moving the camera is still the easiest way. The focus limiter on the lens is easy to operate, for extreme macro it somehow improves the focusing speed, but not for a lot.I bought this mainly for underwater photography; the good news is that this is about the same length as fully extended 14-42 so it can be easily fitted in any existing housing/port. All in all, this is a perfect macro for m4/3 without a terrifying price tag.

I have owned several Olympus lenses, including the 12-60mm f2.8-4.0 and the 50mm f2 macro, but this lens simply out-resolves them all. The focus is fast, silent, and deadly accurate.
