Bought this for my nikon D600 and was very unhappy with Nikons app, very primative and drops connection all of the time. I was getting ready to purchase camranger and came accross an app that does the same thing that camranger does but it works with the WU-1B perfectly and the app is free. It is "dlsrdashboard" and there is an app for ipad, android and windows. I am using android on a Motorola Zoom. I cannot believe that Nikon is letting this money making app slip through there fingers. If you want a instruction manual you have to purchase it from [*] for your kindle app, it costs $2.99. Anyone that is wanting a great app should get this now, you will be glad you did.Oh yea I almost forgot the best part you can record video remotley with this app!!!!!!!!

The instructions for this unit are woefully incomplete. Expect to have the unit disconnect from your smart phone every time until you set your timers to never expire on the camera itself. (i.e. keep metering on, keep displays on, etc.) If you don't do that, the wireless unit shuts down EVEN THOUGH you have it in live view. As a result, you really wind up PLOWING through batteries with this unit on the side.

Even when you have the power off timers set high, the camera will disconnect from the remote control software after the first picture EVERY TIME. After you go through the whole process of reconnecting, then it'll often (but not always) stay connected. But the really poor thing is that for some reason when the camera disconnects on its own, the software AUTOMATICALLY turns off live view! So you reconnect, hit the button to go into camera control and it looks as though NOTHING is happening! It took me forever to figure out that I had to go back into the menu, turn live view back on (EVERY time -- arrrgh!), then I was back to where I started from.

So the sequence works like this... connect to camera wi-fi. launch wamu utility, connect to camera. Start live view, take a picture. Camera disconnects from wamu BUT NOT from wifi. Exit wamu. Re-launch wamu, see it "find" the camera again. Tap on take a picture. Nothing happens. Bring up the menu, then turn live view back on. NOW you'll hear the shutter open, and start getting live view pictures on your phone. Hit button to take second shot. Pray that the camera doesn't disconnect again or you'll have to do the whole nine yards all over again!

Functionality the WU-1b is adequate, but just barely. With the wu-1b attached to your dslr, you CANNOT review pictures on the dslr -- EVER! Even if no phone is connected and you aren't doing anything else (say live view), you can't review pictures. Hit the play button as often as you like, it ain't happening. You have to physically pull the wu-1b out of the camera to use the playback button on the camera. UNACCEPTABLE!

Plus while you have control of the camera on the phone, even though the phone CANNOT CHANGE any camera settings, all the controls on the camera are locked out so you can't change them there, either. You have to back out of live view, slide the slidey thing on your phone so that the camera is now under camera control (WHY is this necessary!??), make the changes, then move the slidey again to take control of the camera from the phone again.

It's almost as though Nikon tried to design camera control like a government bureaucracy. What should be a simple single or double step process is instead made into a sixteen step busywork process. NOTHING is easy. NOTHING is intuitive. Seriously, assembling IKEA furniture is *easier* and *more intuitive* than using the wu-1b and its associated software!

Possibly the most frustrating thing about this unit (besides the continuous disconnects until you jack the power off timers to infinity) is that you can NOT use it to start/stop video! This is such a glaring oversight that it's almost comical. You're already in live view, even if you only did a frame every now and again during video capture it'd be OK. But to have it completely NON-FUNCTIONAL for video is just insulting to the average person's intelligence.

It does what it says on the box (which is why it's not worthy of only one star), but ONLY what it says on the box. It will take a picture. It will download that picture to your phone so you can share it on facebook. That's IT, it will do NOTHING, and I mean *ABSOLUTELY NOTHING* else.

Such a waste of potential! This could have been a slam dunk and THE REASON to choose Nikon's products over everyone else's. As it is, it's barely a blip on the radar, and a weak blip at that!

Best use would be for a remote camera that you want to capture stills only. Additionally only good enough for a location where if the camera doesn't fire it's not a big disaster. In other words, this product is nowhere near ready for serious photography, and is only barely adequate for just puttering around photography. It's simply too unreliable and far too unfinished for anything else.

Bad Nikon, bad!

I have searched for many products that seamlessly upload photos to devices and this by far is the best one i have found.

works way better than and EYE-FI card and photos do not need to be downloaded to phones in order to view first.

my only comment about the product that annoys me a little is you can not review photos on the camera while the adapter is plugged in and you cannot change shutter speed pr aperature while in the live view mode

aside from those two things which arent the biggest of concerns for my use i find the product to be fantastic and easy to use with the on phone app

The inability to control the camera's settings -- ISO, aperture, shutter speed -- from the Nikon app comes as a real disappointment. Also, the "viewfinder" on the app is overly dark, making it difficult to see the objects of the photograph. But, as a shutter remote, it works very well. And the WiFi's ability to transfer photos to a phone or tablet is useful. It works, I just wished it had more features.

Comments about Nikon WU-1b Wireless Mobile Adapter:

I read many reviews on the wireless mobile adaptor and tend to disagree with the harshest. I purchased this unit because I needed something to assist me in low level shooting due to my inability to get low due to an injury. Upon setup I did experience disconnects but after about 5 tries it worked beautifully. I do shoot reasonably close to my setup. I have had a few disconnects since initial setup but that would probably equate to about 2% of total time used and number of frames shot. Understanding it's limitations and the cost of the unit I think it is a good piece of equipment that attaches nicely on the camera strap out of the way.

Remote shutter release and the ability to view the lens image on my IPad make it a useful accessory at a modest cost. The mobile utility software was created for a smartphone but will work on the iPad. The software is not included but can be downloaded from App Store.

Remotely control (but not very remote)

Comments about Nikon WU-1b Wireless Mobile Adapter:

An inexpensive means to remotely control your camera. Not too remote, however. Instead of the device joining an existing network, it generates it's own wi-fi network SSID. You then use your iOS device (or Droid device) to join that network. That's great for locations away from a regular network, but it would have been nice to have both choices available (create a network SSID OR join an existing network). Since this is a small device and the power available is limited, the signal is somewhat short range, about 50' or less.

You can, using live view, see the image the camera presents, on your portable device. You can focus and release the shutter from your device, and you have two choices about where the resulting photo should reside. It can be stored, as usual, on a memory card in the camera, or you can have it transferred to your portable device. However, the data transfer rate is slow, the pictures large, so the download can take 15-30 seconds. While the transfer is underway you cannot take another picture.

There is no control of aperture, shutter speed, or any other camera settings.

I have used a product called DSLR Remote (from ononesoftware) in the past. You run a "server" program on a Mac or a PC, and connect the camera to the computer (a 30' USB cable works fine). The computer is connected to a wi-fi network, as is my iOS device. The program on the computer (and the app on the portable device) can change the aperture, shutter speed, ev setting (for under or over exposure), see the live view picture from the camera (or turn it off), can focus, focus and shoot, or just shoot, along with some other options. Great choice if you have the ability to place a computer somewhere near the camera and get a wi-fi signal as well. I setup the camera on my deck, the computer is just inside the house, and I can be anywhere else in the house and use my camera.

This thing is rad. It's functionality should've been included in the newer cameras, but I'm not reviewing Nikon as a company, I'm reviewing the WU1b specifically. If you haven't figured out yet, the Nikon app is lame. What you need is a free Android app called DSLR Dashboard.... FREE. It adds an entirely new dimension by remote control of your camera. Very cool. iPhone or iPad users.... too bad, get an Android, they're much cheaper, and to be honest, buying a Nexus 7 or something, just to use with this device, is money well spent.
