I use a wired remote shutter release a lot (do mostly landscape images). I purchased a Vello wired remote (AZ0512) not long ago. It worked fine until the wire connecting the cable to the shutter release end of the device split. Afterwards it only work intermitently. I replaced it with the Nikon MC-30A wired remote. The Nikon has all the same features including shutter hold lock for Bulb mode use. The quality of the Nikon seems better. It remains to be seen if it is more durable than the Vello (only had the Nikon a month). The Nikon MC-30A feels more comfortable in my hand. The release button is at the top of the device and the shutter hold button on the side (Vello uses a combo button). This makes it easy to use a few different finger combinations to trigger the release and, if necessary, slide the hold lock bar. The cable length is about the same as the Vello. A white arrow on the camera connection end of the Nikon cable makes connecting it to the camera easy and fool proof.

But as it is a real plus : strongly recommend having a remote

Comments about Nikon MC-30A Remote Trigger Release:

After buying a cheaper after market product that didn't last, I'm trying the over price Nikon remote and why I gave it a 4 star rating over a 5 but so far its working great. I think them adding the larger wheel to connect it to the camera was a plus. I use it for several reasons like when I want to minimize camera shake or have my hands free for something else like trying to get a child to smile. It also comes in handy trying to capture a lighting strike. Never the less, it works great so far but like all of Nikon accessories, they are pricey but I guess you get what you pay for.

When you want the least vibration, a sturdy tripod, mirror lock-up and a cable release have been the way to go forever - still works for me.

Not the cheapest, but seems strong enough to last.

Will soon buy spare for tripod case (just in case…), I never want to leave home without one.

Comments about Nikon MC-30A Remote Trigger Release:

Works with my DSLR cameras (D300,700,800E) and my film SLR cameras (F100, F5). And it has a lock for very long exposures. Good for landscape photography, long exposures, camera is on a tripod, reduced motion of handheld is needed, and the camera is in a position where reaching the shutter button is awkward or difficult.

I bought both the MC30A and Vello RS-N1II Wired Remote Switch. Both are very usable. The nikon has a thumb trigger with a long travel length while the vello has a side push button with a very short travel, Both have a positive feedback at the focus only location.

I took apart both. Then Nikon has 2 microswitches mounted on a printed circuit board activated by a metal shaft with two coil springs. The cable has a full compliment of wires for all the pin locations- most of which are capped with shrink tubing. The vello has 3 leaf springs that are pushed by the button. It is very simple and looks more like a toy when compared to the nikon. The cable only has 3 wires.

The nikon has a better camera connector. It has a huge collet that is easy to install on the camera and has arrows to show the mating position. The vello is very fiddly to screw on the camera and has no arrows.

The nikon is by far the better made of the two but the price difference is huge. $8 v.s.$65 Which one you get depends on how often you use it. Both are very usable.

Great with tripod for sharper pictures. Has a large nut to tighten or untighten from your camera. Much easier to turn with your finger than others with smaller nut. Plugs in easily to camera.

Only con is price is a little high.

Use with my D300 and D810. Works as described. Some would like a longer cord. I tend to agree; but, have not found the cord length to be problematic.

A bit fragile as I have just send back one for servicing (doesn't work any mmore after 7 months occasionnal uses)
                                    A bit expensive
But as it is a real plus : strongly recommend having a remote

I am shooting at slow shutter speeds on a tripod and this makes sure I don't add any movement to the camera. Works just fine.

Comments about Nikon MC-30A Remote Trigger Release:

This is my second release and it is far better than my previous model, which crashed on me while I was trying to take Seascape images. It works well, but can be a little tricky (at least for me) to release the shutter and set the lock for long exposures. At this time I am using one hand to release the shutter and the other hand to slide the lock into place. Don't get me wrong... after a short period of time this method is easy. This is built much better than the other releases I've seen and it actually works. For me the cable length on the MC-30A is just right and the cable is actually pretty thick which I think is a good thing. My last one was too long and thin. The 10 pin connector has a white arrow on it that lines up with a white dot on my D810 making connecting it to the camera easy. The locking screw is big and works well. Anyway, great product!
