The 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD Lens for Nikon from Tamron is an updated version of their popular 90mm macro lens. It features Vibration Compensation image stabilization technology for limiting camera shake blur and an Ultrasonic Silent Drive Motor for fast, smooth and quiet autofocus.  A continuous manual focus mechanism provides precise manual focus, especially important with this lens' 1:1 macro capability. And an Internal Focusing system means the front lens elements do not rotate and the lens does not change length when focusing, also important for macro shooting. In addition to macro capability, this 90mm lens is also considered to be an ideal lens for portraiture.

Two extra-low dispersion elements and one low dispersion element reduce chromatic aberration and make for sharp, high resolution images. Newly developed eBAND hybrid lens coating combines conventional multi-coating with a layer of nano-structured coating for particularly uniform light transmission and minimal reflection. This reduces flares and ghosting in your images.

An extra large and ridged focus ring and moisture resistant construction give muscle to this optically impressive lens.

Ultrasonic Motor
USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) Motor is the power for a fast and quiet autofocus drive that works in harmony with continuous manual focus mechanism.
Internal Focusing
The IF (Internal Focus) system focuses by moving only the internal lens group, rather than the front lens elements- therefore, the overall length of the lens does not change when focusing.
Vibration Compensation
VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron's proprietary image stabilization mechanism which reduces the effects of camera shake to deliver sharp images in low light and at slower shutter speeds. It is a newly developed three coil system that employs a lighter moving coil mechanism which contributes to its improved performance and overall compact design.
XLD and LD Optics
Two special XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) elements and one LD (Low Dispersion) element minimize chromatic aberrations.
eBAND Hybrid Lens Coating
A newly developed nano-structured coating layer with extremely low refractive index on top of conventional multiple-layer coatings, the eBAND Coating provides superb anti-reflection performance, delivering sharp images and eliminating flare and ghosting.
Macro Function
1:1 maximum reproduction ratio and 11.8" (0.3 m) minimum focusing distance provide sharp close-up performance.
Circular Aperture
The rounded 9-blade aperture retains a nearly circular shape even when taken two stops down from its fully open state and offers attractive out-of-focus background effects.
Moisture Resistant
Moisture-resistant construction helps prevent moisture from penetrating the lens.

This lens has certainly met my expectations for close-up and macro photography. Well made, good snug fit on my Nikon 7100, tack sharp, fast focus, and very quite. Evidently, the VC technology is quite effective. Very sharp images have been produced with many hand held image captures. I also tend to shoot 2 or 3 images in the continuous exposure mode to help minimize any camera shake effects as well helping not to miss the area of focus with a narrow depth of field situation. The attached images of a small dragonfly and the small banana spider (1 inch body length) wrapping a lunch were hand held exposures. With the Tamron 6 year warranty included, I felt comfortable making this purchase.

I got this lens hoping it would be an affordable alternative to Nikons 105mm micro, which is quite a bit more $$. Sorry to say, the copy I got did not perform up to expectations. On my D7000, its sharpness at 1:1 was, at best, good but not great. I used it for a variety of macro shots, from flowers to wood grain patterns, glass beads, etc. None of the images I got were what I would call "tack sharp." Color was excellent, but DOF was lacking. Know that the sweet spot for this lens (like most macro lenses) is about f11-f16, and beyond that you loose all sharpness within a close up image. Maybe I got a bad copy, but it went back anyway. Think I'll stick with Nikon glass.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD Lens for Nikon:

Got this lens last week and took it out for a spin. It fills out my lens armory perfectly. A great portrait lens and it also gets me in close for those abstract natural landscape forms that I am so fond of. It is light yet seems to be well made. It's not cheap at $ and change but I know I will get a lot of mileage from it. There seems to be a strange frame creep situation going on however when I use focus stacking techniques on manual focus. Not sure what that is about yet.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD Lens for Nikon:

This is my first Tamaron lens and I love it. Between work and home I have access to 15 Nikon lenses and 2 Tokina wide angle zooms. This lens is easily one of my top lenses. I was going to go wth the Nikon 100 macro until I started reading the reviews. The Tamron 90 is sharp, quick, quiet, and the VC works great. No regrets.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD Lens for Nikon:

I bought this lens because it was the top rated lens on dxomark less than $. I was surprised to learn that the aperture limit changes according to focus distance, probably becase it's an internal focusing lens? The following are aperture limits for each focusing distance:• 2.8 : inf• 3.0 : 20'• 3.2 : 3'• 3.5 : 2'• 3.8 : 1.5'• 4.5 : 1.2'• 5.0 : 1.05'• 5.6 : 0.98'This isn't an issue for me because macro lens are best at the 9-11 apertures anyway and for protrait work a 3.0 is good enough for bokeh, but this lens really shouldn't be advertised as an F2.8, anymore than a zoom lens (F4-5.6) should be advertised as a F4. Slimy omission by the marketing department at Tamron.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD Lens for Nikon:

I bought this lens to help analyze product problems. Used on a D300, almost always on a tripod and frequently in locations requiring additional lighting (two Nikon Speedlights, reflectors.) Image authentication is almost always turned on. The results exceeded my expectations. I try to get enough light to shoot @ f/16 and will shoot a series of shots to allow me to get greater dynamic range using software. Shots are also combined for greater depth of field in the final image. Manual focus is used when on the tripod but the auto focus is good when used handheld for larger objects. It appears to be as sharp as the Nikon pro lens I have. I bought this lens @ B&H and have had it long enough to say with certainty it's a great lens.

This Tamron 90mm f/2.8 is a very sharp lens. Perhaps the sharpest I own. But, macro's are known to be among the sharpest lenses one can buy.I like the auto focus and the vibration reduction. The grab-and-go style of the manual focus ring is nice too. The build quality seems to be as good as most of Nikon's newer offerings. The optics are every bit as good, or better than Nikon glass. The only thing that slightly dissapoints me is that it doesn't open to f/2.8 when you are focusing in macro mode. The lowest you can go is f/5.6. You only get f/2.8 at infinity. I think that should be mentioned in the advertising. It's not a "deal breaker" for me, but I do think the lens should be labeled/named as"90mm f/2.8 - 5.6 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD" and it should be explained.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD Lens for Nikon:

I did extensive research to find a macro lens in order to attain the highest quality slide copies using my Nikon D800E. I have 40 years of Kodachromes and Ektachomes from my film days. I have paid to have several hundred scanned professionally, but was not completely happy as the high resolution scans are jpegs. At 1:1 I can see JPEG artifacts. I decided to try scanning myself with my Epson 750 scanner, but the time it takes to scan each slide is unacceptable. I needed the quality of scanning with higher speed. After extensive research, I purchased this lens, ran a number of tests to ascertain optimum aperture for the lens and to refine my copy protocol. Briefly, ISO 100, Live View, aperture priority, mirror lock up, and a 2 second shutter delay on a Kaiser copy stand over an Acculight Light Table. Also, copying the slide emulsion side up is slightly sharper than through the film base. I then imported the raw files (at 14-bit) into Lightroom 5. I am very pleased with the camera/sensor/lens lcombination. The copies have no artifact, a long dynamic range, good color and are as sharp as can be. As you can see, I'm pretty much of a perfectionist when it comes to my work. I highly recommend this lens for similar work.

Bought this lens because it offered the features I wanted in a macro. From 90mm with vibration compensation to being a prime lens which allows me to be close enough to my subject, yet far enough away not to spook the live subject. Has
excellent build quality and doesn't feel chintzy
like others I considered. I highly recommend this lens for anyone interested in macro and yet can be used for general use such as portrait also.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD Lens for Nikon:

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD Lens for Nikon:

This is a beautifull made lens with stellar optics and it has the quietest autofocus of any of the 50-60 lenses that I have used. It is quite quick as well. I only occasionally use this focal length, but it doubles quite nicely as a portrait lens with very good bokeh. This is why It has replaced my Nikon 105 VR and my Nikon 85mm 1.8G lenses and I haven't regretted it (yet). My only criticism is that this is the second copy of this lens that I have had, so if you really want this lens, don't settle for an inferior copy.

The lens is accurate. The photos are exceptional. Auto focus is quick and vibration reduction help for handheld. Need to get use to it but I can tell,it is a good lens. Use with D600 Nikon and because that camera work well in low light the result at dusk and dawn are very surprising on the good way. Buy it now and get $ rebate.

This is a great all around lens for portraits or macro work. It gives you true 1:1 magnification as well with a stabilization. Images come out sharp and crisp.

I have been using my Tamron lens, since it's arrival. All I can say is that it's GREAT! Really impressed with the results of it's capabilities.
Have been using it mostly for flowers, insects, etc.

This is awesome lens. I tried Nikon 105 vr2 macro and i prefer this. VC is excellent. AF is fast. Good build quality. Nothing less than Nikon 105 vr2 macro and may be even better image quality.
