The Diskstation DS413 4-Bay NAS Server by Synology is a 4-bay enclosure that supports up to four 4TB SATA II hard drives (hard drives not included in the standalone version, but may be included in B&H Kits). It features a dual core 1.067GHz processor with an integrated Floating Point Unit for faster processing, 1GB of DDR3 RAM and USB 3.0/2.0 and eSATA ports.

It also features wireless support via a dongle, and built-in Windows and Mac backup desktop applications like Time Machine. You also have print, mail and FTP server capabilities. The printing protocols include LPR, CIFS, IPP, Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, Multi Functional Print Server (for Windows PC only). As a mail server, you'll find support for POP3, SMTP and IMAP protocols. Networking protocols include VPN, iSCSI and FTP for if you are in need of a fully-functioning web server.

If you're more interested in a full-fledged media server, add on packages (delivered through Synology's DiskStation Manager) include support for Xbox 360/PS3 along with support for MP3, WMA, AAC, AIFF and Ogg Vorbis codecs and many more. It also supports ISO, AVI, DAT, MPEG1, MPEG2 and MPEG4, Xvid and other video formats. Download protocols include BT, HTTP, FTP and eMule, so downloading bit torrents from your favorite peer-to-peer networks is not a problem.

If used in a small office setting, the unit comes complete with network and personal security measures. FTP over SSL/TLS, IP auto-block, firewall, encrypted network backup and secure HTTPS connections are just some of the ways you can protect your data. Complete control over groups, shared user accounts and shared folders is another way.

Managing your data is just as simple as it is secure. You have a variety of options, including push notifications over mobile devices, email/SMS notification for event logging, and custom management ports, all handled with auto DSM upgrades. If using the unit as remote server, you also have PPPoE support.

Dual Core Performance
With Dual Core processing power, Synology DS413 delivers an average 80.86 MB/sec writing speed under RAID 5 configuration in a Windows environment, and 111.12 MB/sec reading. The built-in Floating-Point Unit makes for faster thumbnail processing to enhance photo viewing at different resolutions. USB 3.0 support offers transmission speeds of up to 5 Gbps, 10 times faster than USB 2.0.
Smart Energy Management
The DS413 takes less time to transfer data to external hard drives and consumes less power. During low activity levels it uses very small amounts of power. During System Hibernation mode, DS413 consumes only 3.3 watts of power to listen for network activities, and resumes operation in a short amount of time upon demand.
Flexible Storage Management
The Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) feature automatically builds an optimal RAID volume with data protection based on the hard drives installed. This eliminates the need to have hard drives of identical size, while still offering a manual setup option for advanced users. Multiple Volumes on RAID allows you to create more than one volume on a RAID structure, providing a flexible and efficient way to manage your storage across all available hard drives. When the need arises to expand the volumes, simply allocate more storage space on the UI, and DSM does the rest for you without any service disruption.
Complete Backup Solutions
A web-based backup wizard is provided for backing up data in Synology DS413 to another Synology DiskStation or any rsync server via an encrypted protocol, or to an external hard drive via USB and eSATA connections. In addition, backing up to the cloud using the Amazon S3 service is supported. An add-on package, Time Backup, keeps DiskStation data in multiple versions, so IT administrators can easily keep track and restore to previous versions whenever required.
Rich Office Applications
Synology DiskStation DS413 runs on a multitasking operating system, the Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM). Offering a list of business applications, the DS413 can be customized to run multiple applications of your choice. The DS413 replaces several pieces of traditional network hardware with rich features designed specifically for workgroups and offices such as antivirus, video surveillance, webmail, VPN, and LDAP directory services. Applications are managed in the Package Center, an application portal that hosts applications as ready-to-use packages and ensures software integration and one-click-installation. Additional approved 3rd party PHP web applications such as content management, customer relationship management & e-commerce systems can be hosted on DS413 by using Web Station with support for PHP/MySQL web content.
Data Encryption
The Synology DS413 is equipped with an encryption engine which offloads the encryption calculation task away from the main CPU, helping to improve file transfer speeds of the DiskStation. High-end features previously available only on enterprise level hardware are now accessible via Synology DS413 to small and medium-sized businesses. DS413 provides share-level AES 256-bit encryption to aid in the prevention of unauthorized access attempts to the hard drives.
Energy Efficient
With 35.62W of power consumption in operation, Synology DS413 is designed with energy efficiency in mind. It provides two 92x92 mm fans and a smart airflow to keep the system running cool 24/7 and its noise dampening design is very quiet. The support for multiple scheduled power on/off events and System Hibernation can further reduce power consumption and operation cost. All Synology products are produced with RoHS compliant parts and packed with recyclable packing materials. Synology acknowledges the responsibility as a global citizen to continually work to reduce the environmental impact of every product produced.

Comments about Synology Diskstation DS413 4-Bay NAS Server:

I just acquired my DS413 and I couldn't be happier. It was simple to install and configure. Moreover Plex Media Server is now available for the PPC platform! Obviously it'd be nice to have a faster processor or more memory but it's sufficient for my needs for now.

The only problem (if you want to call it a problem) is I had was I needed to format the drives first on Windows. Had it up and running in under 1 hour.

I plan to keep all the families film and pictures on the NAS. I don't want to loose any of my data.

Comments about Synology Diskstation DS413 4-Bay NAS Server:

So I bought this NAS for my home to house all of our videos, backups, etc. Synology software is a great selling point. I finally have the NAS that can stream videos straight to my Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad (also my computer of course.) Plus the ability to manage almost everything remotely is a big plus too. Adding torrents and managing them remotely is very very sweet. I have a gigabit Ethernet connection for my home LAN, and I am able to fully saturate it with this NAS. Read speeds are over 100 MB/s and write speeds is averaging 60-70 MB/s as well.

Comments about Synology Diskstation DS413 4-Bay NAS Server:

The product delivers on all of its promises. It is easy to manage and reliable. I am using it in a mixed environment that includes a MacBook running OS X, an HP Laptop running Windows 7, two Dell PCs running Windows 7 and an Asus laptop running Windows 8. I am using Suncovery software for my backup operations and it runs extremely fast and efficiently. I am also using Time Machine (wearing a belt and suspenders) to get two different kinds of backup. The DS413 gives me plenty of useful functionality and I love the Smartphone access to my Pics, Videos and Music.

I even set up my daughter with a Cloud Station folder on her PC so she can synch that folder with my DS413. This gives her an offsite backup of all of her pics and videos.

Looking for more ways to take advantage of this NAS. I highly recommend it.

Comments about Synology Diskstation DS413 4-Bay NAS Server:

                        Chassis
The device is much lighter than I anticipated, having previously owned an Infrant ReadyNAS which now seems like a lead weight compared to the lightweight but sturdy plastic of the Synology DS413. The only thing I dislike about the chassis is the blue light which is extremely bright. If I didn't have this stashed away hidden in my basement, I would find the blue light quite annoying in my office or bedroom, especially at night.

                        Installation
Installation was simple, simply goto a website which instructs your PC to locate the Synology on your LAN, then it downloads and installs the DSM OS using your PC's internet connection. There is a wizard to configure some basic settings. I have four Samsung (Seagate) 2TB drives previously purchased years ago. My plan was to create a 2-disk volume, copy data to it, then insert two more disks and expand the capacity using the additional disks. This two stage approach is because my data currently resides on two of the four disks.

                        Background Initialization
I created a 2 disk volume using Synology's Hybrid Raid (RAID1 (mirrored) by default). The volume was usable for reading and writing after several minutes, but there is a background initialization that takes a ton of I/O and many hours to complete. I did not stick around to watch the initialization complete, but it was done by the next morning. During the background initialization the user transfer speed to or from the disk was about 9 MB/s. However, once the background initialization completed I was at full performance.

                        Performance
I started my first bulk data load and the average speed to the 2 mirrored drives was 85 MB/s for several hours using just a single stream. As a test, I initiated three large write copies in parallel and was surprised to find the overall throughput remained high 65 MB/s+. I am quite pleased with that sustained throughput given the effective spindle count of one. I should mention that my files were very large (average 500 MB) and very "easy" to sustain high throughput.

                        Volume Expansion
With the first data load complete, I added in drives 3 & 4 and it was a breeze to expand the volume. Again, the volume was usable again within a few minutes, but performance poor (20-30 MB/s) during the background verify which took many hours to complete (24 hours+). The new capacity was not available until the background verify completed. The progress bar for the expansion was misleading, and initially it appeared that the expansion would take over 100 hours, though it actually completed in less than 30 hours. Performance in the RAID5 SHR volume averages around 50 MB/s, and a sequential transfer bounces between 30 MB/s - 70 MB/s.

                        Applications
I configured a few of the built in applications, File Station, Surveillance Station, etc. with ease. The interface is quite intuitive for a novice, but has a lot of advanced features for a more experienced administrator. As a test for third-party apps, I installed the CrashPlan headless client using the PC Load Letter package and am using the Synology as a target for multiple PCs on my network.

                        CPU
The DS413 uses a Freescale QorIQ 1022 PPC clocked at 1.067 GHz. This is the same CPU that is in the DS213+. Before I purchased I had some concerns about compatibility, but everything in the DSM platform works perfectly. I have not tried Plex yet, but given that the CrashPlan third party app works just fine, I have high hopes.

                        Power
Power consumption of the DS413 is about 30 watts continuously for the 4 drive RAID. My primary use is as an "always-on" File Server and connecting my Raspbmc for streaming entertainment over a CIFS share which works very well. The Synology + raspbmc combined take less power than my speakers so this new setup will save substantial money over the previous setup I had (PC file server and XBOX 360 which was about 200 watts average consumption).

                        Temperature
Temperature of the four 2TB disks is 28 C, 82 F when there is good airflow. As a test, I encapsulated the entire enclosure in a cabinet and the temperature of each drive increased to 38 C, 100F.

                        Summary
Overall I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. Having used Windows servers in the past I am pleased to present similar functionality and performance to my home for an extremely low cost option. I am quite satisfied with my purchase, and I am already planning to purchase a second Synology to replicate to.

Comments about Synology Diskstation DS413 4-Bay NAS Server:

The DS413 is a fantastic NAS. Installing the drives was a snap and the setup couldn't be easier. The Surveillance Station works perfectly with my Foscam cameras and was very easy to set up. The only drawback is the license cost per camera (it comes with one).
There are quite a few free add on packages available which really add to the usefulness of the system.

Comments about Synology Diskstation DS413 4-Bay NAS Server:

                          I have been using DS-210j until I ran out of disk space and CPU (installed add-ons);
This unit is very noticably more powerfull than the old one. The famous thumbnail conversion took 2 days where the older one was working weeks on it and never finished.(I had to stop it); The photo station is more snappy now, and there are no long waits. Synology web site has the step-by-step migration procedure which was easy to follow. I am very happy with the upgrade.

Comments about Synology Diskstation DS413 4-Bay NAS Server:

I have originally bought Patriot javelin but I couldn't even find it on network. I returned it and than thought I should pay little more money and bought Seagate Bussiness NAS. Which was the worst product ever. 4x2tb Hitachi ultra star in raid 1+0 were reaching only 12MB/s write 18MB/s read. OK but than if you attempted to use any other function let's say folder encription or just change any setting the nas would stop responding and the only Seagate resolution is format drives again. Now finally Synology! Haven't had any problems what so ever. Absolutely amazing! Are you using MS Skydrive or drop box? Well I use my nas and i get 4tb of cloud storage everywhere. The nas comes with mobile apps for android and mac. The system it self will include plenty of packages including antivirus mail server DYO DNS server to speed up your browsing. You can also install .SPK files for ARM of your choice. Yea HDD read speed seems to be limited by Gigabit LAN speed cause it runs around 125MB/s and write is 78MB/s. Worth every $$!

Comments about Synology Diskstation DS413 4-Bay NAS Server:

...can't say a bad thing about the device. It's fast, low power, secure, and capable of much more than just storage. There are also great how-to's on Synology's website for the built in features.

But if, like me, you're drawn to it for the many add-ons available, be ready to experiment because the useful answers from the user community are few.

Multiple drives in synology NAS. Run very quiet, you can hear the case fans run every so often if you are listening closely. Drives run between 80-83 degrees Fahrenheit while idle or moving 2 TBs of video. Would strongly recommend. Possible to add hard rives to increase storage size without rebuilding system. Runs in a Raid environment so data is secure even if one drive fails. My 16 TBs of photos are finally safe. Setup as public server so clients can view pictures to order.

I have four WD 3TB Red drives in this unit. The interface is fairly easy to use and is loaded with features. I had no problem connecting my pc and Mac.

On the downside Apple Time machine is so slow it's not useable. I checked the Synolgy forums and found others with the same complaint.

You'll need a Gigabit LAN if you want this to work. Copying files over 100Mb network will yield you speeds of 10MB/sec.

There are many mainstream NAS out there now and they might be better suited for the less tech inclined consumers than Synology NAS, however if you're willing to learn and play around abit Synology can be surprisingly intuitive.Synology has some serious experience making NAS and it shows. DSM has been out for some time and had plenty of time to mature.I had the DS212J setup at work and everyone loves it, so much that unfortunately for me I couldn't take it back since everyone became so dependent on it. I Bought the DS413 for personal use with 4x 4TB configured to run RAID5 which leaves me with abit over 10TB of storage. It costs alot of money to setup but I was able to buy 4 4TB external HDs for $ each and just took out the internal drive. You risk not being able to return the drive and voiding all warranty so make sure to test the drives before you take them apart.SO far everything went extremely smooth. It's being used as dedicated media cloud server for all my co workers to stream videos from their mobile devices.

I bought this particular DS to run 24/7 supporting a HD security camera and backup as a time machine (MAC) for three laptops. Created separate volumes for all. Time machine will keep going and going till space is used up, so volume creation puts a stop to that. Put 4 4TB HDDs, chose RAID 5 (one HDD failure tolerant) and came up with 10.9 TB. Synology is by far the leader in SOHO NASs!! One more note: B&H is also a leader in prices, fast shipping, and keeping you informed on any issues concerning order. My number 1 site to shop electronics!!

Installed easily and seems to function without any problems so far. I've only had this for a week now. Its nice to have all my photos (almost 100K) all on one hard drive set - much easier to deal with in LR now instead of hunting for hard drives and getting all the drive letters all messed up.

Comments about Synology Diskstation DS413 4-Bay NAS Server:

I wanted an easy to set up NAS that was expandable, but also could be accessed from outside my home. The synology NAS system automates many of these tasks and the idevice programs work well with it as well. I am not an expert by any means with respect to networking setup, but I found the synology system within my abilities to get to work in the way that I wanted. The web-based GUI is pretty self-explanatory and straight forward. I have automated backups for both Mac and PC working, as well as using it for the repository for my music and videos. All of this can be accessed remotely. I manage about 40-45 MB/sec (byte, not bit) over gigabit Ethernet, which is quite usable. I put 2 3gb WD Red drives in giving me nearly 3gb of storage with redundancy. When that runs out, I can simply drop in a new drive to bays 3 and/or4 and the system will automatically rebuild a raid array to expand the storage. I researched many systems, and while this one is somewhat pricey,I am glad I went with it.

If you follow default setup, you can do it with a bit of technical knowledge. Replace a Buffalo TeraStation because of incompatibility with Mac OS 10.8. Used 4 2TB drives. Will take several hours for parity check.
