Pros:Easy setup, preformatted for Mac & Time Machine. Fast, sturdy reliable. USB/Firewire/eSATA
Cons:More expensive than most similar-sized external drives.
The Bottom Line: This external HD is the choice of media pros. It is fast (7200 rpm), looks and stays cool (without a fan but with fins), and holds 2 TERABYTES!

The room is inside this 2 TB drive, and the view is of a distinctive flanged metallic 'brick', built like a power amplifier, and indeed similar in that it features a very big and effective heat sink down below it (it sits on 4 feet, horizontal) and excellent ventilation. It's designed for pros, and apparently well-known, though the buzz of late now includes the new 4 TB version. (I'll spare the arguments for/against, both technical & economic, but the 4TB model is quite new, and offers USB 3.0, but with only a small number of reviews thus far, all good, but early...) This drive comes ready for USB 2.0 (not 3.0) or for Firewire 400/800. (Three decent-length cables are included!)

This drive has been much reviewed on the tech/geek/Apple forums, and is often recommended as an external drive for the Mac computer's Time Machine backups, by Apple itself. I've been using a 1 TB Apple Time Capsule, as the backup device and wireless router combo but as it was getting filled and a 2ndary backup drive had died, I decided to go with this 2TB model, with legions of fans and solid reputation over time. I'm glad I did. Here's why, in part:

Set-up/interface: Simple. This drive comes pre-formatted for the Mac's journal system - but can be re-formatted for PC. Some have written reviews complaining of incompatibility issues, while most other reviews describe how easy the set-up is, especially for Mac. Setting it up was simple - just 'plug and play' - and getting a prompt (or following simple directions) to assign the larger, new, HD to be the backup drive for Time Machine (backing up the entire Mac memory, incrementally). Click/slide to 'yes', make this drive the new backup drive for time machine, and you're done, except for the big decision maybe - of whether to back up NOW. It can take quite a long time if you're backing another entire large drive, even at high speed.

Connection options - a choice of USB 2.0 , or Firewire 800 (backwards compatible to 400, with supplied cable, or eSATA) - in fact, 3 nice cables come with it. Some (reviewers I've read) write about the super-bright light which flashes when working;some suggest a piece of film or tape over it. Works for me - because of the metal grille design, believe me, you know it's on or if it's flashing! It's also true that it runs extremely quietly most of the time, no fan, but lots of heat sink and disbursal (evenly) through the vents everywhere. Warm at most, the actual metal grill, never hot, even when working hard.

Start-up/use - It does make noise when it cycles up, for backups or other. (That's a physics issues with multiple plates in such large drives - the mechanics, heat, reliability, continuous duty cycle, etc.) But this really is the 'go to' for many image/video/gaming pros.

It's super fast as well as super big. It spins at 7200 rpm, 32MB buffer - Speed: 33MB/sec using USB 2.0; 61MB/sec using FireWire-800; 38MB/sec using FireWire-400; and 85MB/sec using eSATA.

It costs a bit more as it's meant for professional/serious use and long-term reliability. As someone who has replaced a good number of suddenly-died, or progressively corrupted/damaged drives, after only 2 years or maybe 3 (talking Maxtor, Syquest, Western Dig, etc.) - I gave in to the call of durability: quality-before-great-price, as my data is important to me, and it's a royal pain to duplicate a drive, even from backed up media or time machine.

Last bit, from experience now (a few weeks) and being past the trepidation following reading both the rave reviews and "I keep getting lemons" reviews elsewhere -- It was indeed immensely easy to plug into a Mac and follow the very few directions - in fact no documentation came with it and the drive had 0 bits of clutter: it was entirely empty, a new experience for me. Yet it was immediately recognized by my Mac. I went to the website of G-Tech and easily found and downloaded a .pdf manual (as you can) and quickly saw the quick guide to setup, which in my case involved calling up Airport utility first, to change backup drive for TimeMachine to the already recognized G-Tech as the new designated backup drive, move the switch on the Airport utility to set it, done. A minute or less.

Do I want to backup now? Yes, please. 8 hours later..... [Suggest doing a big drive transfer overnight, at whatever speed!] It backed up over 895 GIGabytes of data, doing the math, ok, 111 GB an hour. I was expecting (magic?) more of a blaze, using firewire 800, but when I think back just a few years it took like an hour to back up my entire 1.2 Gb hard drive, so I guess an initial backup of nearly a terrabyte, at 111 GB/hour isn't too shabby. Just do expect fast, not miraculous.

It works wonderfully. I do hear it cycle up now and then, as I used to hear the time capsule (which did the backups), same duration & frequency. Similar sound, too! I was concerned about it cycling up seemingly randomly, in between time machine backups (now hourly). So I did what some reviewers said ended well: I called G-Tech's support. Got through quickly, no hassle, and I described my concern, wanting to keep this new marvel in top shape - should I turn it off? Worry? No, the tech guy explained: When it's the designated drive for Time Machine, periodically it will update it's read on what's happening now on the Mac, as seen through Spotlight. So if I'm sitting watching a video or away from my desk doing nothing on the computer but I hear/see it cycling on between backups - I'm happy to know it's normal for that very bright light to light up for just a second or two. Fine, let it do its thing...

This durable-looking thing is made like a brick, and also pretty especially for Mac Devotees (it matches the MacGrille), totally easy to just plug in and use for anything practically, and reportedly quite reliable. And with plenty of space for new photos, videos, databases, and apps... as well as many backups to come. Win-win. Best of all, though: like one or two other best-ever backup drives "it just sits there... and works!"

I bought this drive because the usual eSATA version was not in stock. Figured that this was the next evolution of the G-Drive I know and love. But as it turns out, Hitachi has put a green drive, with imbedded sleep programming, that cannot be turned off, even in system prefs. This means that the drive spins down all the time, and re-accessing the drive takes a good few seconds to spinning back up (first world problem, I know), which is an inconvenience at the least.

Also, I found that after spinning down, and spinning back up, the drive was inaccessible for some reason, until I restarted it. Not co-operating. Sent it back for the eSATA version. I'm sure I'll be happy with the replacement.

This is my go-to drive work and backup drive, I bought three of them this time. I'm guessing I've bought 20 or so over the past couple of years. I've tried the Thunderbolt version, but the USB 3 version works adequately for me. (I was mainly doing file backups, so I didn't compare it for HD video editing, and I was working from a MacBook Pro.) The drives are not silent, but they're the best I've found.

This higher speed hard drive makes editing video faster. Plenty of connections to piggy-back other hard drives with it. I like the raised design and it doesn't get as warm when using it for long periods of time.

This is probably the most reliable drive out there for backups and storage. this is now my 5th. i like this size and form factor. Flexible interfaces allows me to connect it to anything i have.

i'm still a little cautious with the SSD drives as i've had a couple still go bad, and they're getting more reliable. But, i have not had any problems with these G-Tech drives at any time.

Not overloaded with ports. Has the two that matter: USB3 for modern speed, and FW800 for connecting to legacy computers.

As with all G-tech products, it's got a solid build with no play between components. The only other manufacturer that makes products that as equally solid is Lacie.

Not the cheapest drive around, but it's always money well spent, I think.

As a musician, I primarily use the G-Tech drive for archiving song files I've created. I've used a G-Drive Mini mobile hard drive with my Macbook Pro for years with no issues what so ever. So far, every indication is that I will have the same excellent service from this desktop drive.
And, it's always a good experience dealing with B&H!
