I actually just got this drive so I can't speak on longevity. However, While looking for some backup drives for archiving original video files I decided to give G-Technologies a shot.

Construction: The build is solid and I like the look. I saw another poster mention the light on the front under the logo is a little distracting. It is a little bright and could be a little less distracting. Very minor issue though. I also have the Lacie d2 Thunderbolt. Both drives are nicely designed. The G-Technologies is narrow and deep where the Lacie d2 is wider and and more shallow depth, like a square vs a rectangle. Either works for me. The rubber feet on the G Drive are permanent where the Lacie d2 have two rubber column things, used if you want the drive to lay flat, that are difficult to put on and they don't stay on good and could get lost. However, the G-Drive can only lay flat where the Lacie can stand vertical with the optional vertical foot mount with comes with the d2. As far as noise, both drives seem to be just as loud. Basically you can hear the drives spinning. Compared to rMBP with solid state drives they are noisy. But for spinning external drives I guess it's expected to be a little noisy, and it's nothing out of the ordinary. A long white Firewire 800 cable and medium length USB 3 cable where provided and seem fine. Power supply, well, it's a power supply and seems fine. The power supply is small and fine and length is decent enough for me to get it where I need it.

Speed: It says 165 MB/s on the box and that's what I get using the provided USB 3 cable. Running Black Magics Disk Speed Test on rMBP late 2013 gave me 159 MB/s read/write. I get a little faster on the Lacie d2 using a Thunderbolt connection, 190 MB/s read/write. But I'm happy with the read/write speed of the G-Drive as it performs to it's specs. G-Technology lists their specs clearly and accurately. I figured I may be able to save some money by getting Seagate Backup Plus for Mac. However, you can not find any specs on these drives anywhere! I even called Seagate and they could not/ would not tell me. They told me the external drive enclosures are the bottle necks and they would be surprised if you get more than 60 MB/s read/write on any external enclosure drive. I almost believed them for a second and bought the Seagate. Glad I did not.

    Longevity: We will see....

Conclusion: In the short term I'm happy with the construction and performance of the drive. Providing the drive lasts long, I will definitely buy more G-Technologies products. Also, I called their customer service with some questions and they were very helpful.

I have a 2TB GRaid and recently purchased this 4TB GDrive for pro video storage. I've always liked and relied on these drives - they're generally great. But watch out. The 4TB has a bug (at least on mine and apparantly, on others) - on a Mac you sometimes get an 'error -50' message when you try to transfer material to the drive. it won't allow it, particularly after the drive has gone to sleep but is still on. It's also impossible to eject this drive - you must shut down your entire computer before turning the drive off. If you call GTechnology they have a patch that fixes this and will guide you through installation, but first you must backup all material on the drive, which, for me, means buying another 4TB drive for $300. That's annoying.

I've been using G-Tech drives for 5+ years and find them to be incredibly reliable and fast. This model finally did away with the external power brick, so kudos to G-Tech. But it is a big drive on my desktop.

Comments about G-Technology 4TB G-DRIVE USB 3.0 External Desktop Hard Drive:

So far the drive is working well. It is louder then my Seagates, which I typically purchase. I had stopped using G-Tech drives because my last experience was not good. The cases were bent. There was clearly a manufacturing problem as multiple drives rocked back and forth on a known flat surface. I purchased a 3TB USB3/Thunderbolt G-Tech drive at the same time. These are being used as a temporary solution to a problematic RAID setup I have.

Big plus that so many cables are included. It seems like this drive is really the only way to go right now.

I buy these drives in pairs to back up all my image files twice.
They are easy to stack and have been reliable so far.
I daisy chain using Firewire 800, I am not that concerned with the speed of the drive as I write once and then create a Media Pro catalog pointing to the first of the pair of drives. I copy the select RAWs to another location before I send it to Lightroom for post.
I wish they would add a short Firewire 800 cable to each box to help with neatness in the daisy chain.
B&H is the best, except for the candy they offer on their counters, terrible for the teeth.

I have been using G Drives since 2009, and (perhaps, knock on wood) no problem with them to date (March 2014). This drive backs up all my files at home and is stored in a distant location in another city for backup.

Fast for editing, smaller than recent models and easy to travel with.
Still fragile, make sure you back them up!

Basically a great storage device. Doesn't take up too much space on your desk, two firewire and one USB port, comes with cables - 1x USB and 2x firewire cables. Really simple set up - basically plug it in and off you go. Not quite as fast as I'd like it to be, but fast enough for what it is.

I use this drive as a secondary back up so it is constantly plugged in to my Imac. It takes a few seconds to read, and is a little bit larger than I expected since it sits flat rather than upright. Seems really sturdy.

I use G Drives exclusively these days because they are very sturdy and very stable. I can move the drives between my home and office without worry and I even dropped on one time on the cement and it was just fine. Data transfer rates are fast and work well with lard HD video files. I use the drive primarily to edit HD video on a Mac.
