              Comments about G-Technology G-RAID mini 1TB Dual-Drive Storage System:

I purchased a G-Technology G-RAID Mini USB 3.0 (preconfigured to RAID 0) in June 2013. I read many bad reviews about the USB 2.0 version of the G-RAID Mini, but I rolled the dice hoping the USB 3.0 version would be better.

              I was wrong.

The G-RAID Mini worked for about 10 minutes until failing. When I used the power adapter in conjunction with the FW800 - FW400 cable (per the instructions), the drive emitted a loud, constant beep sound over 10 seconds that crescendoed with a VERY loud "pop" sound. After the "pop" sound, the drive began behaving abnormally and smell of electronic burning. I exchanged the drive to B&H for a new one, hoping I had just gotten a lemon.

Unfortunately, the new drive was only slightly better. Both drives exhibited the following behavior: About 30 seconds after connecting the device to my computer (Late '07 Macbook) via FW while using the power adapter, the G-RAID mini makes a series of 8-10 high pitched, distinct, 8-bit sounding, electronic sounds followed by the fan starting to rotate and pause in 1-2 second intervals.

Additionally, after ejecting the device from my machine (with the FW or USB cable still attached), the fan continues to exhibit this behavior accompanied by similar high pitched electronic sounds as the fan comes to a stop each time. The only way to stop it from spinning in the 1-2 second intervals and making those sounds is to disconnect the drive from my computer.

Tech support said this behavior was not normal, and that I could exchange the drive if I wanted. I decided that 2 defective drives out of 2 was reason enough to stay far away from the G-RAID mini.

To top it all off, the software used to configure the G-RAID Mini to RAID 1 must be downloaded from G-Tech website, however, the software simply DID NOT WORK. Only after multiple G-Tech support forum posts and emails was I notified that the software on the G-Tech website was in fact "outdated" and I would have to be emailed a .ZIP of the updated software.

This means G-Technology sold the G-RAID Mini USB 3.0 as a RAID 0 / RAID 1 device for the better part of a YEAR knowing full well that the software needed to change the RAID configuration was non-functional!

People generally speak very highly of the older G-Technology products, but their USB 3.0 products are fraught with problems (read the user reviews around the web). Instead of fixing these problems and delivering quality products that function as advertised, G-Technology has decided to ship these products as-is with many "known issues" (non-functioning software, firmware issues, etc). What's worse is that G-Technology still advertises their products as "professional", "quality", "high performance", and "reliable".

I will not be purchasing or recommending G-Technology products until they start shipping products and software that work as advertised.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. BEWARE OF ALL G-TECHNOLOGY USB 3.0 PRODUCTS.

              ---

I've since purchased the Newer Technology Guardian Maximus Mini and 2 WD Scorpio Black 750 GB 2.5" hard drives and, although it lacks USB 3.0, it has worked flawlessly. I highly recommend the Maximus Mini for those looking for a portable, bus powered RAID solution, who can live without the USB 3.0 connectivity.

                  Comments about G-Technology G-RAID mini 1TB Dual-Drive Storage System:

In my opinion G-Tech makes one of the best external Hard Drives. I am using this drive in RAID-1.

The drive looks great, and is quiet and takes up very little space.

I am using my drive on a Windows 8 machine via a USB 3.0 connection. Good transfer rates.

My only complaint was that the RAID configuration tool for Windows did not work. I had to set the RAID level to 1 on a Macintosh and then re-configure for Windows.
