The RM202 Riggy-Micro Dual-XLR Preamplifier by juicedLink is designed for cameras which already have audio meters, manual gain control, and a headphone output. The RM202 features efficient operation, small size, and a lightweight design for mounting flexibility. It can even be mounted in the hot-shoe on top of your camera.

The RM202 features 2 locking XLR inputs with low-noise microphone preamplifiers. Each channel includes a Mic/Line level switch and a Hi/Lo gain switch. The inputs can also be summed mono, copying each input to both sides. The right channel can be completely powered down to conserve battery power if not needed.

When engaged, the Audio Output Bracketing feature of the RM202 ensures that your audio inputs won't clip or distort. By placing the RM202's performance in mono and enabling the 16dB pad on the right channel, you end up with two signals with identical content, yet the right is recorded 16dB lower. This way if a sudden loud noise or a boomy portion of audio is recorded, you'll have a backup track with headroom in case the 0dB output clips.

The RM202 Riggy-Micro is powered by a 9V battery. High capacity lithium-polymer rechargeable batteries can be used as well as alkaline. The low-battery indicator can be switched between alkaline or lithium-polymer threshold, so you can use either chemistry without leaving unnecessary capacity in the battery.

        Great Preamp

Comments about juicedLink RM202 Riggy-Micro Dual-XLR Preamplifier (No Phantom Power):

If you're recording audio on a SLR, then you NEED an external pre-amp. Being able to run the audio back into the camera means less time syncing in post than if you were recording externally.

I shoot on a 5D Mark III with a Rode NTG-2, and this works perfectly. Set in camera audio to manual levels, then put it at one click above off. Use the Micro to manually adjust the audio on the fly, and you'll get nice, clean sound.

I like the build quality as well; the whole unit just feels solid. With a Watson rechargeable 9V battery, I can easily record a days worth of shooting no problem.

        What I don't like:

Some of the adjustments are located on the bottom of the unit, meaning if you have this attached to a tripod or Glidecam, you'll need to remove it in order to access them. It's not a huge deal to me, since I rarely need to adjust them anyway, but if you're someone who needs to switch between 1-2 mics, or turn on/off Hi gain, then it might be cumbersome.

It's also rather oddly shaped. The mounting screw is off to the side, so you can't mount the whole thing directly under the camera; rather, it sits off to one side.

Finally, it comes with a 3.5mm male to 2.5mm male stereo mini jack. Whereas my 5D has a 3.5mm, so I had to buy a different cable.

On the whole though, you can't beat the performance at this price.

great if you can't bring a dedicated sound person to the shoot. Be careful not to use the high gain with lav mics though. it will blow out!

Works great with a Nikon D800. Without a pre-amp, the D800 -- which has manually adjustable levels -- has way too much hiss when connected directly to an XLR mike. Adding in the juicedlink, you can set the Nikon's sound level low and control volume from the pre-amp's convenient two knobs. This also allows level adjustment while recording, not otherwise possible with the D800. Note -- no phantom power, so the mic's will need batteries.
