The RA222 Riggy-Assist Dual-XLR Preamplifier with Phantom Power and Metering by juicedLink is designed for cameras that don't have integrated audio meters, manual gain control, or a headphone output. The RA222 features two 4-segment meters which can be calibrated to the camera, an 1/8" mono headphone output and an AGC disable switch.

The RA222 features 2 locking XLR inputs with low-noise microphone preamplifiers. Each channel includes a Mic/Line level switch, a Hi/Lo gain switch, and a Phantom power switch. The onboard Phantom power voltage is selectable between 48V/12V. The inputs can also be summed mono, copying each input to both sides. The right channel can be completely powered down to conserve battery power if it is not needed.

When engaged, the Audio Output Bracketing feature of the RA222 ensures that your audio inputs won't clip or distort. By placing the RA222's performance in mono and enabling the 16dB pad on the right channel, you end up with two signals with identical content, yet the right is recorded 16dB lower. This way if a sudden loud noise or a boomy portion of audio is recorded, you'll have a backup track with headroom in case the 0dB output clips.

The RA222 Riggy-Assist is powered by a 9V battery. High capacity lithium-polymer rechargeable batteries can be used as well as alkaline. The low-battery indicator can be switched between alkaline or lithium-polymer threshold, so you can use either chemistry without leaving unnecessary capacity in the battery.

The main thing the RA222 does is eliminate the hassle of syncing your audio to video if you don´t have timecode. That said, the sound quality is better than DSLR internal audio, but I would not describe it as outstanding, as I have read in some reviews (I´m using a Rode ntg-3 mic with it). The preamps are certainly not as good as something like Sound Devices MM-1, which sells at the same price, but of course with that you have the hassle of syncing your audio after shooting. The build of the RA222 is at first touch....flimsy. While it doesn't need to be heavy to be built solid, there are some components that are built from an inexplicably cheap plastic. I´m talking about All for a Dollar store cheap plastic. The battery compartment and switches on the bottom of the device are made from it. The audio bracketing switch (which is a nice feature) was stuck on arrival and as I pushed it with force I was having serious doubts. It didn't break, but I´m not so sure how well these cheap components will hold up in the field after repeated use. For a $[*] price tag that´s pretty weak. Probably would have cost $5 in production costs to use a more robust plastic or metal on the switches and battery compartment.

Comments about juicedLink RA222 Riggy-Assist Dual-XLR Preamplifier with Phantom Power and Metering:

I use this for professional quality audio with my DSLR cameras. With some minor configuration, you'll have it running great quickly. Juiced Link provides some very helpful, and extremely necessary, video and text tutorials on their website.

          What I like:
          - It simply makes using my pro mics possible on my DSLR's so that's a good thing.
          - I like the headphone monitor port so I can listen to what I'm recording. However, this doesn't mean your camera's actually recording audio so refer to your specific camera for that linkage.
          - I like that it supplies phantom power if needed.
          - I like the multiple XLR ports.
          - Lots of customization possible with the bottom controls

          What I don't like:
          - Don't forget to turn it on! It's easy to forget sometimes.
          - The audio bars on the side are only 4 high so, while they help some, they really don't give you a great judge of accurate levels. Adjusting the gain of the actual audio versus the headphones is two different things, and without a detailed levels monitor, this can be tricky.
          - When attached to the bottom of one of my cameras (Canon T5i), it covers the battery compartment, making it a pain to switch batteries. Not an issue with my Canon 6D.
          - I don't like the allen wrench connection. It means you better always have one with you. Or, you must buy more of the $40 quick plates for easy on/off (tripod quick plates are ridiculously overpriced, but that's a different review)

Comments about juicedLink RA222 Riggy-Assist Dual-XLR Preamplifier with Phantom Power and Metering:

I bought this unit after trying the Beachtek DXA-Connect adapter (which had too much hiss and lacked signal strength). This Juicedlink unit, however, does the job. Just as advertised and demonstrated in an online video, this unit has more power and less noise. Plus it can help disable the AGC in my Samsung NX1. I'm seeing good signal into the camera. I found that the Juicedlink meters need to be calibrated up to match the camera, but there is adjustments under the unit. I think Juicedlink should show all the adjustments under the unit to show the controls this thing has. My only complaint so far is I don't think AGC is completely disabled, for I detected a little of it still happening upon playing back a test clip, though barely noticeable compared to without this adjustment. There doesn't seem to be many choices for getting clean audio into DSLR cameras, but this one does. The only left to consider is whether mounting the unit under camera will mess up my camera alignment once I mount to rails and attach my cinema zoom, because my zoom will need a support bridge. Waiting on the adapter for that.

Comments about juicedLink RA222 Riggy-Assist Dual-XLR Preamplifier with Phantom Power and Metering:

Very easy to use and set up. I run it both directly to my Canon 70D and through my Zoom H4N (H4N for back up only). The day I received it, I plug it in and was really impressed with the sound of recording. Very impressive. Very glad I bought it. Plug it into an old Sony Handicam and was pleased it worked seamlessly with that camera as well.

I use this wonderful little preamp with my Canon 7D, and for the first time I can actually get good audio without an external recorder, be able to monitor the audio going in to the camera, and monitor the levels. There are always new cameras and gear of all sorts, but I see this little preamp sticking around for a long time as it will be useful far into the future. The form-factor is a little clunky, but sometimes something great doesn't have to be something sexy and sleek. I expect it will survive the rigors of travel with no problems whatsoever.

I use the RA222 mounted on my Canon 6D. My boom connects via XLR to the JuicedLink and that connects to audio in on the DSLR. Audio comes in loud and clear. The pre-amps on the JL work as advertised. It really helps speed up my post workflow because I can skip the sync audio step.

It's powered by a 9V battery with no external power options. Perhaps JL needs to look into a solution for that.

I bought the RA222 for a Canon T4i. I also have two EV R300 wireless lavs. Overall, the RA222 works fine and gave low noise and clear audio. The connection to the camera needs the allen wrench that comes with the RA222 mixer for attaching and removing. Lose that wrench and you will have trouble. I tested many audio levels with the camera to get the right quality. The led's on the front of the RA222 mixer only light when the level is loud. This confused me since I was looking for some visual indication of audio. I set the Canon to manual in the mid level and the very small potentiometers on the RA222 to 9 O'clock and the level was fine. I also tried using a Zoom audio recorder and got all kinds of RF interference. I could hear a radio station. Not in the Canon camera and not out of the RA222 mixer. Only when using the Zoom audio recorder with the mixer. There are many and I mean many switch settings on the bottom of the RA222. I left them the way they came, but there are countless combinations of audio settings.

This product makes it possible to have great sounding audio recorded straight to your DSLR. I use it with a Nikon D5100 on the low gain internal preamp setting and it works! The meters even matched up perfectly without calibration. One drawback is the price, but compared to all the competitors this product is much higher quality. I also had a problem with the screw mount being too long to tighten into the camera resulting in the freedom for it to spin when attached. Still working on a good solution for that. It is definitely worth the investment though. Solid, well thought out product.

Took some time to configure and the instructions are not the best but once setup it vastly improved audio output.

Works exactly as they advertise it does. One HUGE feature is the audio bracketing - when using just one mic, it can duplicate the signal on the second channel at a lower level. By using this you have a fail-safe for over modulating. Great Job, can't recommend enough!
