The DF-583 Power Zoom Speedlight for Canon from Vivitar is a fully automatic, dedicated Canon system speedlight. It features full through the lens (TTL) support for Canon DSLR cameras, and a bounce, zoom, and swivel head that gives you more creativity when lighting your photos. Eight selectable power levels and an automatic shutter speed grant you precise control over the ten power zoom positions from 18mm-180mm, and high speed synchronization - to capture fast subjects.

Versatile enough to be used outdoors, as well as inside a professional studio setting, the DF-583 makes it possible to set up a studio environment anywhere, anytime. It incorporates a built-in reflecting plate and diffuser, which expands the angle of illumination for larger venues. A red focus beam will help you achieve focus in low light conditions, and power saving circuitry incorporates an auto-off element to give you longer battery life.

The built-in rotary dial makes selecting modes and settings quick and easy, while the information displayed on the rear LCD panel clearly shows those settings you've chosen. Power the flash with any four AA batteries, and turn on the power saving function in order to conserve battery power and prolong battery life. With all of these features, and more, the Vivitar DF-583 helps photographers fill shadows, add depth, avoid red-eye, and improve image resolution - with detailed manual controls when you want them or simple automatic modes when you don't.

Talk about a hard time finding reviews for this item! B&H is the ONLY place I could find any and only two at that. This made me worried about this flash initially.
The first time I used it that worried feeling disappeared.
First off its TTL is impeccable. The fully rotatable head is fantastic. Makes bouncing light off of any surface a snap. Also the little white card which pops out of the top to help bounce light towards your subject is very handy.
For how powerful it is it has a surprisingly long battery life. I got almost a thousand shots before I had to switch them out.
As far as durability only time will tell. But for the price it is hard to beat.
Lots of features, fully manual, great for studio or wedding settings. I use mine with a Canon 5D mkII
You are making a good decision if you buy this.

I bought this flash thinking it was a good buy since Vivitar made good manual flash but to my surprise it was bad. I took it home from B&H and that night took one shot of my son. It looked good, which made me happy. The next night I took it out to shoot my follow New Yorkers and to my surprise it didn't fire at all. I thought the battery died so I bought some new batteries and it was the same thing. The DF-583 did not fire. So I sent an email to Vivitar explaining what happened, it took someone from Vivitar two weeks to reply back to me suggesting I take the flash back to B&H to have them look at it. Disappointing all around. I would strongly not recommend buying this flash. Yes it is inexpensive but the machine did not even work.

While I'm still tryimng to figure out some of the menu items it seems to be a pretty solid little machine. Moving into bounce position is a little rough, but like the canon 580 that I was looking to compliment without the hefty price tag, it also has a white card and diffucer that comes with it.

Comments about Vivitar DF-583 Power Zoom Speedlight for Canon:

This flash stopped working two months into purchase; I hardly used it for the real purpose I bought it and it gave up on me. It comes on but it just won't fire. I was extremely, extremely disappointed. I did so much research and I finally had decided to go with this one based on the number features on there; I thought it was the best buy. Well lucky me. I would give this negative stars if I could. And what pains me is that I hardly fired it for more than ten times. Now I'm at a loss with the project I had planned to do. Now I can boast that I own a $[$] paperweight.

Comments about Vivitar DF-583 Power Zoom Speedlight for Canon:

This may be a perfectly fine flash unit, but please know that it is not fully compatible with the Canon 6D (and probably other Canon bodies as well). After purchasing it, I found that this flash was not capable of enabling the 6D's high speed sycn feature, something that is extremely important if doing fill flash outdoors in bright sunlight. I had to return the unit and buy a Canon flash (unfortunately at twice the price!).

This flash is an amazing deal... on paper. It's specs are almost as good as the Canon 580EX II.

The reality is that this flash taught me the true meaning of "off-brand." The construction is flimsy. The plastic creaks and it wiggles around on the camera. The instruction manual is completely useless. Worst of all, the A-TTL didn't even work. I had to return it.

I exchanged it for a used Canon 580EX. Name brand costs more but at least it works.

I am very impressed with the overall flash for the money and would purchase again

Comments about Vivitar DF-583 Power Zoom Speedlight for Canon:

My expertise with strobes is a bit limited as I mostly use fixed or natural lighting. I have had a chance to look at the canon 580 strobe but, Because strobe photography is not my mainstay, the specs are similar and, the price is much lower, I chose this strobe. The recycle time is very fast @ 1/8 power and below allowing quick successive shots. I bought two and the slave function works well.Downside, the documentation is awful and the snap-on diffuser that comes with it, is better off staying in the box it came in.
