With the ioShutter Shutter Release Cable for Nikon DSLR from ioShutter you can use your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad to control the shutter on your Nikon DSLR camera. Take timelapse, bulb, or timer shots via your device. There's no need to carry a separate piece of equipment; you can have remote capabilities with you all the time on your iPhone or other device.

Using the 2.95' (90 cm) release cable and the free app (which can be downloaded from the Apple App Store) on an iPhone4S, iPhone4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone3, iPod Touch gen 4 and all iPads, you can control Timer, Bulb and timelapse functions. Sound Trigger and ShakeToTake functions can trigger your shutter and will operate together and in any combination. You can use a sound trigger, like a clap or a laugh, to shoot a timer exposure or a bulb exposure of 60, 90 or 120 seconds. Or use ShakeToTake to trigger timelapse exposures. The release cable is also compatible with the Pro App available for sale separately in the App Store. The Pro App expands the functionality of the modes.

This cable is compatible with all Nikon DSLRs except the discontinued D70, D70s and D80.

Control your DSLR using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. The ioShutter app is compatible with iPhone4S, iPhone4, iPhone3GS, iPhone3, iPod touch gen4, and all iPads.
ioShutter includes a 20-second and 60-second timer for more time to set up your shot, with or without you in it. Bulb mode offers 60-, 90- and 120-second slow shutter speeds for fantastic night photography. Timelapse offers three options to enable you to begin making your own timelapse movies.
With ClapToSnap Sound trigger you can easily and affordably trigger your camera with sound using ioShutter. Clap, laugh, scream, bang stuff and it will fire your camera.
Multifunctionality: almost every function can work with the others. Sound can trigger a timer countdown or a bulb exposure. The timer can also trigger a bulb exposure or timelapse shooting. And you can set up your system to have ShakeToTake start a timelapse program or a timer or bulb shot.
This ioShutter works with all Nikon DSLRs except the discontinued D70, D70s and D80.
With Pro App (available separately), you can schedule the Timer using Calendar functionality, run a Time Lapse for days, set the dB level for Sound Trigger, program your iDevice's movement sensors and more!

Additional Features With Optional Pro App

Totally programmable timer, including scheduling functionality. Use your device's calendar and clock to schedule your camera's shutter, or other ioShutter functions.
Bulb mode becomes fully customizable to any shutter speed you desire.
Timelapse can be set to any interval and duration.

Comments about ioShutter Shutter Release Cable for Nikon DSLR:

I purchased this setup for one particular reason - to have a mobile-device trigger that allowed me to control exact shutter speeds in bulb mode. B&H was offering a $48 instant savings on the cable when I discovered this product so I decided to take a chance. The cable itself is fine, its the mobile app that's the mystery ...

First, there is ZERO documentation available for the app (io Shutter PRO app). The app developer thought they were clever by building in graphical "instructions" tutorial for how the app works. But I still haven't been able to interpret the hyroglifics they use as "instructions". One would think this app is simple enough but its not quite as straight forward as it looks. When looking for instructions I found that all links to the developer's website lead to disbanded Facebook pages, so there appears to be no developer support available for the app, or if there is support/documentation available it is well hidden.

My first attempt to use the app was incredibly frustrating. The blasted thing seemed to have a mind of its own and practically ignored my inputs/requests. When testing the bulb mode function, the app would release the shutter over and over and over (for as long the bulb timer was set for) instead of acting as a simple bulb timer, which is what it is supposed to be. It was literally as though the app was firing the shutter in Continuous Slow release mode with no rhyme or reason to shutter speed. Also for the app's Bulb feature, I discovered there is no way to use the camera's mirror-up release mode through the app while the camera is in Bulb mode (which is very important to me). If in mirror-up release mode, one has to press the shutter button on the camera to raise the mirror, and then one can use the app to open/close the shutter for the bulb duration.

I experienced the same issue as described above when trying to use the Timer feature in the app. Instead of just counting down a timer and firing the camera one time, the app was firing the shutter over and over and over again for as long as the timer was set. You could say I was incredibly dissatisfied with this piece of junk at this point.

By now I was 30-minutes into testing something that looks really simple. I closed/restarted the app a couple times with no change. And then, finally with the app running, I disconnected the cable from the mobile device for a few seconds and reconnected it and gave the piece of junk one more try. Mysteriously it began to function as I expected. I tested the timer and bulb features for another 30 minutes and they worked fine.

Frankly, my experience with this product, combined with the fact there seems to be zero support available really only deserves 1 star. But, given the fact that I finally got it to work, and that it seems to do what I purchased it for, I'll give it two stars.

My suggestion would be to look hard at alternatives to this product. The Lapse feature holds no value for me so I didn't spend any time at all testing it.

Since this item is a Christmas gift, I can't comment on it's function, but I'm not worried because B&H stands behind their products. Their customer service is great!

    Great Purchase for Astrophotography

Comments about ioShutter Shutter Release Cable for Nikon DSLR:

I bought this cord to attach to my Nikon D5200 and 300mm zoom lens. (Both also purchased through B&H.) It does work with the intended ioShutter app and it also works with Triggertrap. The only issue I seemed to have is it occasionally takes a few shots on its own. I've looked into if it is from the shake or sound activation modes and I'm pretty sure it is just from random current from the phone. Regardless, it's easy to delete those couple of errant photos at the end. This was my first attempt at astrophotography and I couldn't be happier. The shots are very impressive, especially for a crop format camera.

    Buy it!

Comments about ioShutter Shutter Release Cable for Nikon DSLR:

You may be tempted to buy Triggertrap, but it is more expensive. I bought the ioshutter cable and by curiosity, I downloaded the triggertrap app and it works! So buy the ioshutter cable and use it with the triggertrap free app. You will save money and have better control over your camera than with the ioshutter app.

Comments about ioShutter Shutter Release Cable for Nikon DSLR:

I was going to purchase a Nikon MC-36A Multi-Function Remote Cord for my D800, but I saw a review for this in an Apple magazine and I was intrigued. I bought it because (like the rest of the world) I am permanently attached to my iPhone. Once I saw how simple and full-featured the ioShutter app is, I never looked back. It has more triggering options than the more expensive Nikon remotes, but most people will be able to get away the free ioShutter Lite app. I mainly use it for product photography, but it comes in handy as well when I'm shooting long-expsoure images, plus I have my iPhone screen to light the way. To boot, the carrying bag doubles as a lens cloth!

Comments about ioShutter Shutter Release Cable for Nikon DSLR:

          1) I have a Nikon D7000, and the product works as advertised with my camera.

          2) ioShutter is a good choice for night photogreaphy because once it's connected you can use your iPhone to control and time your camera's shutter. You don't need a flashlight. It's also a good choice for short term time lapse photography.

          3) The cable is expensive. There may be a less expensive alternative.

          3) I originally had problems connecting the cable to my phone because my phone case was keeping the cable from fully seating in the phone's headphone jack. I had to modify the case in order to get a functional connection.

ioShutter's email support staff was very responsive. They worked with me to detect the problem.
