Comments about Photoflex LitePanel Mounting Hardware Kit:

I use this product to secure Photoflex LitePanels overhead of my portrait subjects to block sunlight from directly above.

The fit and finish of the product is adequate but not impressive. Mine arrived with chipped paint and one hole that was not drilled perpendicular, though the socket head screw still bedded properly.

The product utilizes an upper cover and a lower track mount held together by 2 socket head screws. You disassemble these parts with the provided hex key and then reassemble them around the frame of your light panel. The lower track mount has a metal dovetail that mates with a slot on the the swivel stand mount and is secured by a locking knob.

Here's the thing. Lose your hex key, you're toast (until you drive to the hardware store to get another). Lose one of the tiny proprietary socket head screws and you are really toast.

The upper cover and lower track mount form a square receptacle for the LitePanel frame which keeps it from twisting. That can be good or bad. I work alone and trying to mount a 77" LitePanel on 2 stands by yourself is quite the challenge using this product. The easiest way is to slide the lower track mount onto the swivel stand mount and secure it before you try to lift the assembly onto the stands. Then you have to raise the stands to height... Now the otherwise laudable grip of the upper cover and lower track mount is a problem. Since the assembly doesn't want to allow the LitePanel frame to twist you either have to raise both stands at the same rate at the same time (need an assistant) or put a lot of strain on your stands and the assembly as you inch up one stand at a time.

My favourite tool for doing the job this product is supposed to do is the Kupo 4" Super Viser (also sold by B&H) along with either a Manfrotto Lite-Tite or, for heavier applications, one of the excellent Chimera single or dual axis stand adapters.

The Kupo is a variation on the Cardellini clamp which is very popular in the movie industry. These clamps are quite large. On their website, Kupo says the length is about 9" in total but it is closer to 12". What the Kupo has, that other Cardellinis do not, is a hex receptacle at the end near the none-moving jaw. This allows you to pop a hex end spigot (not included) in and mount the unit to the Lite-Tite so that the weight of the panel (or whatever else you are gripping) is close to the Lite-Tite rather than suspended nearly a foot away which it would be if you used the baby spigot built into the other end of the clamp.

Using the Super Viser you can put a death grip on whatever you clamp or you can ease back. The jaws are rounded and have a high friction lining. By easing back on the clamping force the LitePanel frames can pivot in the jaws thereby making it easier for me to raise one light stand at a time. It also makes attaching a large LitePanel to 2 stands a much simpler job for one person.

The Kupo and a Lite-Tite will cost you more than this product but for my application there is no question they are the better choice.
