I have owned and operated many cameras over the past 48 years. Some I have enjoyed while others have gathered dust in my closet. But when I went out on a limb to purchase the GoPro Black I had no idea on how much it was going to create a flood of creative ideas and uses for this unique camera. I was already the owner of the original GoPro and have used it many times in the wilds of Washington to capture images and videos. While I plan to continue to use that one it will now be playing second fiddle to this newer version. One of the best features for me is the ability to take advantage of the Wi-Fi capability of the camera. I love to take photos of wild life and sometimes wild people. The big advantage to using this camera is the ability to set the camera up (using a wealth of mounting solutions) and then sitting at a distance and being able to make the capture without disturbing the subject. Also, you no longer have to shoot blindly hoping that you are getting the shot you want. Now you can use your Android phones, IPods or IPads with a simple download of an App and you can watch the action from a distance ensuring that you are getting that perfect shot. Also the versatility of options for shooting your action or subjects is so broad with this camera. The camera allows you to shoot video, stills, time lapse and burst shooting for action shots. How many cameras can you think of that give you that much versatility in such a small package?Anyone who wants to photograph or video actions of any type this camera is an absolute must to add to their arsenal. You will never regret the purchase of this camera. The one downside is that you may lay awake trying to figure what it is you want to use this camera for the next day!

This camera should be great. It really should. It's only when you start using it that you start getting frustrated. Video resolutions are impressive, up to 4K. If you are one of the few who has spent about 20,000$ on a brand new 4K TV, bare in mind that this tiny action cam is only capable of shooting in this extremely high resolution at 15 FPS (rendering it virtually useless). It does feel like the GoPro team added the 4K simply to be able to say: "we have 4K!" And not for actual use which is annoying. More useful resolutions such as 1080p and 720p look stunning (the latter available at 120 FPS which is incredible for slow-motion). You can even shoot WVGA quality video at 240 FPS (insane slow motion - insanely bad quality). Photos look great at sizes up to 12MP and impressive 10 SPS. Continuous Burst is also impressive with up to 30 SPS. Other than that the lighter weight and smaller size (compared to the GoPro Hero2) are impressive as well. Unfortunately, this is where the Pro list ends. The GoPro Hero3 freezes, a lot. You constantly have to remove the battery and put it back in (that's the only way to fix it) which is really annoying, especially when the camera is in one of the cases. Other than the constant freezing, what is perhaps the worst thing about this camera is battery life. It's 2013. We have all sorts of electronics running on batteries for days. We have cars running on batteries for crying out loud. The GoPro seems however to be stuck somewhere in the early 90's. Battery life is horrible, and I mean horrible. WITH the battery bacpac connected I don't believe I was ever able to shoot more than 90 minutes of video, and trust me, I'm being very kind. I have never had the camera on for more than five minutes before the three bar battery indicator dipped to two.Don't even think of using the very useful LCD as it will drain the already non existent battery power faster than you can blink. This is truly the device with the worst battery life I have seen on the market in the last few years. Finally, the built in WiFi is great. Or it would be if it didn't drain the battery even faster. In this case however even if we decide to leave battery life out of it there is still one main problem with the built in WiFi. It's WiFi, not Bluetooth. What that means is that if I wish to control my camera using my iPad or iPhone, I have to disconnect them from their current WiFi networks, and connect them to the GoPro's. why? Finally, after going through all these tedious preparations, all excited to see a live feed of my camera on my iPad, I discovered that there is a 4 second delay. 4 seconds! That is completely insane! This is not a problem with my specific GoPro, but rather an issue plaguing all GoPro users. I was assured by a GoPro rep that the issue is being worked on, and that I have to realize that streaming video over wifi is very very complicated. Once again GoPro - welcome to 2013! The bottom line?Despite some impressive features this camera is not ready for primetime. It feels like an (advanced) prototype, which still has a long way to go. If you don't care about battery life, excessive freezing or WiFi streaming, this camera may suit you just fine.

Comments about GoPro HERO3: Black Edition Camera:
I ordered this camera for my team to document explosive testing and we couldn't be happier. The camera has not only been great for high resolution slow motion capture of the explosive test but has been used to capture diving, rappelling, boating and other tactical operations/training events. The remote and smart phone app give us tons of flexibility...all together I do know of any camera that comes close in capability and ruggediness.
The only CON is that even with the battery backpak it eats up battery quick. It is not to big of a deal but it would be nice to have at least one full day of battery life, rather than only four hours with both batteries.

I use my go pro when snorkling and mountain biking. It's great that it is so versatile and can adjust from a slow underwater adventure to a high-speed descent from the top of a mountain. I've captured some great footage of sea creatures and their habitats, as well as some thrilling bike rides through the forrest. It's easy to upload to my computer and edit, which makes for some outstanding videos that everyone can enjoy watching. At the price that BH Photo & Video offers this product, it's a no brainer. I'd buy it again, but it's so durable that I won't be needing another one for quite some time.

This camera is so small and lightweight I can take it places where I have to leave my big camcorder behind. The images are amazingly good. I use this camera for live action shots of climbing difficult sections of mountains, moving scenes from the car, action shots of my grandson.
The interface takes some getting used to because they are trying to do so much in such a small package. I think it's a good trade-off. We were recently in the desert with heavy winds and thanks to the waterproof housing, I was able to get some interesting shots. Without that housing I would have just trashed the lens trying to shoot in all that flying sand.

I was going to replace my Canon G11 with the Hero3, but now I'll keep both. The photo and video quality is unsurpassed for cameras 3 times the size. The Hero3 is perfectly suited for action and adventure shots, and cinema quality really means cinema quality. It is hard to find a video editor that can maintain the quality! On the downside the Hero3 has a very wide lens; great for capturing the surroundings, but everything looks fish-eyed, so not the best camera for capturing candid shots of loved ones (their noses end up looking enormous). Secondly, the camera has a few bugs that future firmware upgrades should take care of. First of all, it freezes quite frequently, and I tend to lose about 20% of my photos and videos this way. Second, it does not work well with 64GB memory cards, often breaking them completely. Stick to the 32GB cards for now if you value your memories. Oh yes, and the batteries drain in about 20 minutes of video filming.
