The Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Canon EF produces a slightly telephoto angle-of-view on full-frame sensors. It features a very fast maximum aperture of T1.5 and an 8 blade iris, for shallow depth of field with attractive bokeh. The focus and aperture control rings are outfitted with industry standard gearing, which provides an interface for working with a traditional follow focus. The aperture control ring has also been "declicked", which facilitates smooth iris pulls.

The 85mm has a minimum focus distance of 3.6'. Internal focusing minimizes the effects of lens breathing, which insures a more consistent angle-of-view when adjusting focus. The lens is composed of 9 elements in 7 groups, including one aspherical element to reduce spherical aberrations. In addition, a multi-coated elements help improve light transmission.

As a cinema professional with 15 years in the business with almost 10 years behind the camera on film, television & commercials, I can say that the Rokinon Cine Prime series is an absolute godsend for the low-budget professional. Basically, what you're getting is something that performs to 90-95% of the Zeiss CP2 Super Speed series, but at 1/20th the cost. (Personally, I find the tack-sharp image quality of the Zeiss primes a bit cold and impersonal; the Rokinons imitate the organic softness of the Cooke S4 series very well.) Zeiss, Cooke & Angenieux, in my opinion, are like Ferrari or Mercedes-Benz: you pay a premium for the name and the associated "mystique." Rokinon is like a top-end Lexus or Acura: 90-95% of the performance, but at a much more reasonable price.

Unlike the high-end European cinema optics leaders, the Rokinon series are definitely not designed to last for 40 years of heavy field use. Their construction is much lighter and uses thinner aluminum than their European equivalents. The lens caps are the rigid plastic ones used in still lens than the durable polyvinyl caps used in cine lenses. The follow focus gears are plastic and will need to be watched for wear. Despite all this, these are priced so reasonably that even if you only get ten years' use out of one, by the time you've reached the operational lifespan of a single Zeiss lens, having replaced the Rokinon lenses four times will *still* mean you've saved 60% of the cost.

Don't expect to be impressed by the manufacturer's packaging. It's very cheap. Be sure to check your lens for accuracy if you have it shipped. Beyond that, and beyond the lighter construction, I've been very happy with the images I've created. I have a feeling that if the Germans and the French aren't looking over their shoulders in apprehension, they will be soon. At this rate, the Koreans are eating their lunch.

This lens is faster and offers more shallow depth of field than the EF Canon 85 f/1.8, and it's cheaper, but it (obviously) doesn't have auto-focus, so taking stills wide-open is nearly impossible - but you buy this lens to shoot video and for that purpose, it's a great budget lens. The iris is de-clicked, so you can do smooth iris pulls without that stuttering, giving away that you've opened up. Having the gearing on the bezel is also a cool feature. I would definitely recommend the purchase of this lens for video work on EF mount or even M4/3 cameras. One thing that surprised me however (and I've tested this on other Rokinon lenses to the same effect), the lens barrel kind of grinds audibly as you focus, the action is not perfectly smooth.

This is a great addition to filmmakers on a budget. If you are an amateur photographer or filmmaker, I would not recommend this lens, as you will not find autofocus or other consumer options like auto exposure on it. I've used it on a few shoots, and so far it's lived up to my expectations. It's no cooke, but I'm happy with my purchase.

I own multiple lenses including Canon 16-35L, Canon 24-105L, Canon 50mm 1.8, and more. But this lens became the most used lens since the purchase. The large aperture generates the best bokeh and best performance in low light indoor situations. This makes this lens the most fun lens to use.

I have had this lens for about two weeks now and I love it. Great, sharp focus. Smooth ring. Build quality is pretty nice. For under $ this is a great lens for close ups. I'm mostly using it for the Blackmagic 4k camera.

Comments about Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Canon EF:

Bought this just to see what the cine lens was all about. I was not disappointed. This thing is built really well and takes fantastic video. I just finished recording a teen event and got fantastic low light shots as well as bright out door shots. The aperture adjustment is so smooth along with the focus ring. If you want to shoot any kind of video grab this lens. At this price it is a steal. Now I'm heading over to add the 35 mm one!

Pros:- Image quality from wide open- Bokeh- Handling- Construction quality- Value- Video useCons:- Image quality doesn't improve a lot stopping down the aperture- Hood not positive feeling, its made out of cheap plastic. (But again, look at the price!)- Focusing at 85mm f/1.4 is difficult- About 1/3rd stop darker than my other 85mm lensesBottom Line:Buy this lens now if you want a superb manual focus long portrait lens of modern design and don't want to empty your pocket book. It performs like a name brand 85mm f/1.4 at a fraction the price. You must be proficient with manual focus to use this lens at f/1.4 (or be willing to learn).

I was very hesitate investing money into a lens that cost less than usual. I've followed great reviews after another which finally led me to purchase this lens. It has been the best investment yet! The declicked aperture ring really hit the spot on this one. The focus ring is smoother than some L glass I own, and actually took some time to adapt to it. Overall, I have been able to get sharp images and clean video with this lens. I may even pick up its prime brothers soon!

Has been a really fun lens to play around with and I can see this becoming a go to lens for me in interview settings. Can't imagine there would be a better option in this category for the price....and maybe even twice the price.Using with a 7d mark ii and loving the results.

                          - Sharp even at 1.4- Manual Focus wasn't as hard as I had previously imagine (if you have a good eye) on a 5D Mark ii. On a GH4 with a digital viewfinder, it is even easier.- Best to use with Variable ND as even a indoor lite shot will get over exposed at 1.4- 1m minimum focusing distancing is a bit limiting but got around that with a cheap macro adapter- Can't say much about the quality of the newer version of the Rokinon 85 but this without the dual readings on the lens and being much cheaper is worth it imoOne con is the 72mm filter thread. But a cheap step up ring fixes this

Comments about Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Canon EF:

Bought this for filming and it does a great job. But I have been using it mainly for Photography. Its a joy to use, the aperture ring and focus ring move like melted butter. Its awesome to Find your focus and adjust your aperture and see your shot come alive through the crystal clear optics of this lens. Im lovin it.

Comments about Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Canon EF:

I'm an independent filmmaker, so this is definitely a great value in terms of quality and cost.

Pros: It's not on par with the Canon Cine lens, but seeing as though the Rokinon is 1/14th the cost of the Canon. The build quality is a good, high quality plastic, The aperture and focus rings are very smooth; making this an exceptional lens. Video quality is also very good. It's not a Canon Cine, but unless you're absolutely discernible, you won't notice any difference. Using it for it's intended purposes; videography and cinematography, this is a no-brainer when it comes to whether or not you should buy it.

Cons: In terms of build quality, the lens hood is a big drawback. Every time I handle it, I'm afraid that it'll break in my hands. The lens does feel a bit heavy for it's size.

Sharpeness is not perfect. Fully manual lens.

We have rented this lens several times. I was going to rent it again and then checked here for the price. For $ bucks you can't find a better deal. This lens is a must for indie film makers. The clarity is great. See a huge difference in your films. Also with aperture adjustable ring makes it great if you do put it on A something like a GH4 which we have and lose aperture setting inside camera. We use a Canon T3i and have to reason to upgrade our camera anytime soon because of this lens.
