The Canon imagePROGRAF iPF6400 24.0" Large Format Printer is designed for professionals in the graphic, fine art, photography and proofing markets who seek professional image reproduction with consistent and reliable results. A large color spectrum is produced by the 12-Color LUCIA EX pigment ink set, which also provides improved scratch resistance and smoother gradations. The new Multi-sensor provides improved color density detection and allows for a full calibration to be completed within 15 minutes. A new Color Calibration Management System allows for color calibration targets to be created using the iPF6450 with optional spectrophotometer and shared across all new iPFX400 12-color printers. The included software allows for all printers on the network to be monitored from one central location.

The printer supports ink tank sizes of 130 ml and 300 ml. The sub-ink tank system keeps some ink in reserve so the ink tanks can be changed without interrupting a print job. In highest print mode, the order of ink application and layering is optimized to maintain the highest print quality with fewer passes for faster printing times than previous models.

To expand printing options and capabilities, the iPF6400 printer comes bundled with a Print Plug-in for Adobe Photoshop, Digital Photo Professional, and Microsoft Office. The enhanced Print Plug-in for Adobe Photoshop includes a new Adjustment Pattern Setting which allows for multiples of an image to be printed at once with different color values implemented and displayed. Gallery wraps for canvas prints can now be created using the new Gallery Wrap Feature. To improve versatility, the iPF6400 has a media configuration tool which allows customers to utilize Canon as well as third party media.

LUCIA EX Ink Set

Canon's LUCIA EX Ink set is designed for dramatic photographic expression and detailed color reproduction for exacting proofing applications. This 12-Color ink set offers a brilliant range of vibrant colors, smooth gradations and transitions, with incredibly fine details. This specially formulated ink also offers better scratch resistance, superb black reproduction and exceptional color stability compared to its predecessor. Combined with the printer's technologies, the LUCIA EX inks have the ability to satisfy the demanding needs of the Photographic, Fine Art, Proofing and Graphics professionals
The LUCIA EX Ink system excels in reproducing colors in the blue, red, purple, yellow and green spectral ranges, providing an exceptionally large color gamut. Vibrant, rich colors with unsurpassed detail and crisp, clean monotone images make this ink set essential for incredible photo quality output

Color Calibration Management System

The Color Calibration Management Console is included for the centralized management of networked printers in a system from one easy to use software tool. This enables color calibration targets created using the iPF6450 printer with optional spectrophotometer to be linked across the entire line of new 12-Color imagePROGRAF devices. The printer's administrator can monitor and manage each printer in a remote location. Linking color calibration targets among multiple printers allows color calibration for custom media to be performed on printers not equipped with a Spectrophotometer Unit

New Multi-Sensor

The printer includes an upgraded, built-in color densitometer that's designed to offer even more precise calibration and color matching. Using a three-color LED and a newly developed condenser lens the sensor enables accurate recalibration of the device, allowing users to maintain a low average printer-to-printer color difference. Automatic color calibration is finished quickly after a few simple steps on the printer's operation panel. A single color calibration performed with one type of media can be applied to media in all printing modes

High-Speed Printing with Fewer Passes

In the highest print mode, the order of ink application and layering is optimized to maintain the highest print quality with fewer passes, making this mode twice as fast as previous models. In high and standard print modes, print density within a single pass of the heads is optimized to reduce unevenness and support fewer passes as well

New Tint & Tone Adjustments

The new tint and tone controls over the four monochromatic shades allow a user to create even more expressive blacks with smoother gradations - especially in dark areas. Found in both the Printer Driver and Print Plug-in for Adobe Photoshop, the new tone control in the monochrome photo mode includes adjustments for:
  • Soft Tone
  • Middle Tone
  • Medium Hard Tone
  • Hard Tone
  • Strong Hard Tone
A tint control has also been added to the Print Plug-in for Photoshop. This new option gives users the ability to affect the white space on an image. By adding monochromatic ink to an image's white space, the user can improve gloss control in a black and white image, allowing them greater control on how their final printed output will appear

Large Ink Tank Capacity

The iPF6400 supports 130 ml ink tank sizes, and offers an option for large 300 ml ink tanks. Ink tank replacement becomes less frequent and users with higher printing volumes can enjoy greater productivity

Sub Ink Tank System

An ink tank system designed for uninterrupted printing even during tank replacement that has already been featured on the current 44.0" and 60.0" models, is now available for the first time on a 24.0" 12-Color iPF printer. The iPF6400 keeps some ink in reserve in its sub ink tanks so that even when the tanks themselves run out of ink, printing can continue without interruption and the tanks can be replaced on the fly

Gigabit Ethernet Support

Fast data transfer will help exceptionally high measures of productivity

Enhanced Print Plug-In for Adobe Photoshop

This export module allows 16-bit image processing, preserving the expanded color spectrum and high gradation of the file. The Print Plug-in also reduces the possibility of incorrect settings, by providing an integrated interface for print settings in Photoshop and the printer driver, enabling efficient production
The new Adjustment Pattern Setting feature allows for multiples of an image to be printed with different color settings in order to choose the color that most closely matches what you need
The following new or enhanced features are provided in the Print Plug-in for Photoshop:
  • Adjustment Pattern Setting
  • Adobe CMM support
  • Proof printing support
  • Support for commercial profile creation tools

Gallery Wrap Feature

This new creative tool can be accessed via Adobe Photoshop and allows users to easily create gallery wrap prints for framing, as well as creative options that will expand output possibilities:
  • Crop Marks: These lines are a guide for folding the paper for mounting.
  • Edge Lines: The area outside these lines is the area that gets folded around to the back of the canvas (not actually displayed or printed).
  • Blue Lines: The area within these lines is the area that appears on the front surface of the canvas when mounted (not actually printed).
  • Canvas Thickness: This area becomes the sides of the canvas when mounted
  • Amount of Extension: This is the region that is printed protruding excessively in order to prevent white areas appearing on the sides of the canvas
Choose the effect for the canvas being wrapped on the frame:
  • Image: Wraps the image to the canvas sides
  • Soft Image: Performs Gaussian filtering on the image on the canvas sides
  • Reflection: Reflects the image on the canvas sides
  • Soft Reflection: Reflects the image on the canvas sides and performs Gaussian filtering
  • White, Black or Color: Makes the canvas sides white, Black or a custom color

Media Configuration Tool

Recognizing the expanding array of media options for large format printers and to further improve the versatility of these new imagePROGRAF models, Canon has developed a Media Configuration Tool, which allows customers to not only utilize Canon-branded media, but provides the ability to make adjustments to printer settings to enhance the precision and quality of output achieved with third party media

Comments about Canon imagePROGRAF iPF6400 24.0" Printer:

Everything about this new purchase was five star! The sales people with whom I spoke at B&H could not have been better informed and helpful. I called several times as I was trying to decide on my next printer. I am printing more larger images, and it was time to bring that work in-house.

The shipment arrived within three days via FedEx Freight. The packaging is exceptionally well designed and (when I followed the instructions) the assembly and setup was pretty much drama-free.

Canon tech support was superb in answering my questions and giving me hints and tips. Despite shooting myself in the foot a couple of times, the backlog of images was quickly eliminated.

        I used a test image (8" x 12" 300ppi) and produced an incredible 24" x 36" using only the Photoshop plugin.

My work is high-contrast black and white architectural photography and the black blacks and white whites are sharp and clean. It is too soon to comment on ink consumption or reliability. I would definitely recommend this printer to anyone who produces up to 24" x 36" or banners. I am going to try to use it to produce 7" x 5" cards on 7" x 10" stock. Unfortunately the sheet feed is single-sheet only.

Comments about Canon imagePROGRAF iPF6400 24.0" Printer:

Pound for pound, this is quite the printer. 12 colors of ink and a 24" feed add up to a 235 lb crate. I love the color matching I can get across the huge variety of media (fancy paper, vinyl, canvas, ... really cool variety). It takes both the 130 ml and the 300 ml ink tanks, so you don't have to tie up extra money on colors you find that you don't use. Pale gray seems to go the fastest (so far).

          Setup:
          -----
It unboxes nicely (mind the instructions: 3 people to lift it onto the stand!), the stand is sturdy, and the ink cartridges press in firmly via the cover. I installed the drivers and utilities for a Mac.

Once you have a working driver, you use the supplied utility to run a calibration pass on a known Canon paper type. I don't have the spectrophotometer, the reference-color LEDs worked well. The cal runs in about 5-10 minutes and you can use one of the included A2-sized sheets (metric, approx 2 x tabloid) for this step. The calibration is then applied to all the other known (mostly Canon) paper types - hooray!

          Driver & Utilities:
          --------------
I am using this printer with a mac. The driver is fully stable and has never crashed or hung. I haven't been able to get some of the finer points like job accounting & billing features working - some blogs indicate that this might be a Windows-only feature. Time will tell. At any rate, the printed results are fantastic.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR OS X 10.9 MAVERICKS: don't panic, it works fine. However, the successful workflow was hard to come by. This worked for me: (1) download the 10.8 driver by overriding the "Operating System: OS X Mavericks v10.9 (Detected)" drop-down and select "OS X Mountain Lion v10.8" on the Canon iPF6400 downloads page. (2) Download and install the 10.8 driver (but it won't work properly), then (3) go back and download the OS X 10.9 "driver update" and install it on top of the 10.8 driver (i.e., don't uninstall the 10.8 driver!). Printing will work fine after that. If you don't follow this sequence or if you use the CD driver (for 10.7), the OS X 10.9 driver installer will refuse to run, with the vague error message "This software is not supported on your system". That message should instead say "First install the 10.8 driver and then try this one again."

Comments about Canon imagePROGRAF iPF6400 24.0" Printer:

I've been using this printer for about 1 week, and could not be happier. Using the paper profiles supplied by Canon and printing from Lightroom, I've been able to get an almost perfect match between my calibrated monitor and the finished prints. The prints shoot out very fast, are extremely durable (I submerged one in water with no apparent damage after it dried), and are definitely of professional quality. While I am just a hobbyist with some aspiration to go "semi-pro", I could definitely see this printer being used in a professional studio or print shop.

I did have a hardware issue with the printer during setup, but I accept that sometimes problems can occur. I got on the phone with Canon, and they sent someone out to my apartment within 2 days to fix the problem. As fixing the problem used up some of the ink that the printer comes with, they even compensated me by sending me 6 free 130 ml ink cartridges. Now that is great customer service!

Still becoming acquainted! Setup was fairly painless and so far so good. Prints are huge. Oh boy! Wish there were more roll paper options. 100 foot rolls to long for this printer, so somewhat limited. Nothing like a 24 x 36 Brown Bear portrait! Print quality is top notch.

Comments about Canon imagePROGRAF iPF6400 24.0" Printer:

I'm giving 5 stars for the printer. I would give 3 for the shipping service.

Love this printer. It's the perfect size for my graphic design services. Most of my prints are 11x14, so I can do two-up prints and spool as many as I need. I use it with the Canson 440gsm Museum Quality Canvas, which is really really thick and it works wonderfully!

              The print quality is phenomenal.

Very easy to set up. The ink management seems to be pretty accurate. I am not using nearly as much ink as I was using on my Epson printer before this one. I used to be an Epson fan, but am totally sold on the Canon quality and daily use of this printer. I also really like that the print heads are removable should anything happen over the years, the replacement of a print head is far cheaper than replacing an entire printer.

My only disappointment was the shipping. The guy did not come prepared to have a hydraulic lift, even though he said he should have had it. So I guess it was just an individual case, but getting it down my drive way and into my garage was not as easy as it should have been. ( I have a basement studio that I run my small business out of).

Also, he did not take away any of the packaging which I apparently paid for with the very pricy shipping of this product. So I feel a little slighted on that factor. But after having his attitude and frustration with getting into my garage, I am not sure that I would have wanted him to be there for the take down and removal of the packaging. Be aware, there is a TON of packaging though. You will need access to a dumpster if you have to remove it yourself.

Not user friendly, not in the slightest. It took me about 3-4 weeks and multiple phone calls to get it to do one single print. There was something wrong between the Canon/Apple interface. Then it didn't quite match the monitor. Finally I used the xrite I1Profiler Display. I had to print out 4 pages of sample color swatches and then scan them in with the xrite software. This was a real pain in the butt. Finally, I was able to create a custom profile based on the particular paper (canon satin photo roll 240 gm 17 x 100). This whole process took forever. But now the prints are really awesome. I got so frustrated at one point I began outsourcing to an online print lab. And I have to say my prints are better than the online lab in comparison. I still haven't figured out how to cut the printer pages the right sizes, I usually print a lot of extra wasted space when I'm printing from the roll. But again, the prints are really, really amazing. If you're willing to put in the hard work of creating a custom profile, this printer will exceed your expectations. It just takes a while to get there. Also, if it ever prints strangely, use the printer to "calibrate", this fixed everything. I'm still afraid to switch paper because then I'll have to create another profile, but that's probably my own fear. Bottom line: pick one type of paper and create a profile and stick with it, you won't be disappointed. I recommend purchasing this but you have to understand it's a lot of work and the manual is not very good at all.

The only reason for the missing 5th star is the somewhat arcane paper loading instructions. You have to follow what seems to me to be very procedural tasks to do what with other printers is intuitive. If you load the paper before asking the printer to load the paper, you have to unload and reload, etc. But that's a nit. Once you become an obedient servant of the printer protocols, you get fantastic print quality. Roll paper feeds nicely. Watch out for the various prints size options in the print driver as the printer will make some decisions for you if you're not careful like rotating the print and changing the size you send if you "ask" it to.I use Moab paper mainly and the profiles downloaded from Legion/Moab produced very accurate results for the surfaces I've tried - Entrada Bright and Colorado Satine. The Dmax for the Entrada is sparkling. For the Satine, not so much. Pigments just have a hard time with blacks. Cyans, reds, blues, greens, yellows very nice. Magentas have the usual printer lackluster, but adequate.Full width prints take about 30 seconds an inch for twoway ink depositing and about 60 seconds per inch for sink pass ink. It's hard to see a difference in the quality as it is more dependent on the print driver and preprocessing than the printer. With the right rasterization processing, edges are very well defined. Clear fields are very smooth. I've only done a few large format prints so far, but the starter ink set is showing little deplection and I hope to get another 40 - 50 16X20's out of them.Needless to say I'm dlighted so far(20 prints)

Bought this to replace a broken ipf5000, It seems to print quite nicely and the plug in works with CS5 (the 000 series does not). Still gave me some communication issues until I completely rid my system of the ipf5000 drivers etc...

All my fellow photographers were urging me to get the Epson 7990. I also have a 3880. The Canon fit my space better. As I put it together I was impressed with the clever level of engineering involved. The Canon got my attention due to the better, or should I say, more frugal use of ink. Canon ink is also rated higher than the competition for permanance. The prints are first class and I would recommend this unit to anyone.

When the delivery took place, I thought the box was a huge couch being delivered. Yes the carton is gigantic !!! I wanted to use this printer at home so one can imagine my hesitation. After re arranging some furniture luckily it fit behind the bed!! Putting it together took less than an hour!! To my amazement I did it all by self. Learning to print took some reading!!! But once it printed the first print I was liking this giant!!! Roll of paper easy and beautiful prints. My HP 130 nr although a nice compact printer always had issues with papers no matter what I used. Now with the Imageprograf 6400 cannot wait to do black and white. I think this printer is a keeper.
