  • Deflects Stray Light
  • Minimizes Flare / Glare
  • Slides Down to Retract
  • Remains on Lens When Stored
  • Protects Lens
  • Fits M.ZUIKO Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Lens

The LH-49 Sliding Lens Hood from Olympus is a round lens hood specifically developed for the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens. Lens hoods act to deflect stray light from entering the lens and producing glare. They also add a level of protection for the lens from accidental impact. This lens hood is special in that it has a sliding mechanism and can slide down to retract when not needed. This allows the lens hood to remain on the lens when not being utilized or when stored.

Deflects stray light and protects lens
Sliding mechanism slides lens hood down and out of the way when not in use or when lens is stored. Lens hood can remain permanently fixed to lens without becoming an obstacle.
Compatible with the M.ZUIKO Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens and designed for its focal length.

Not sure why the Olympus 60mm macro warranted such a trick hood, but it does work well and (up to this point) feels like it was well-designed. Not sure why they didn't do a simple reversible bayonet hood, but the LH-49 makes the 60mm feel a bit like Canon's 300 F4L/400 F5.6L lenses, with their slide-out hoods. The Olympus doesn't lock in place with a twist, but is otherwise quite similar. When retracted, the focus limit dial is still completely visible and useable, but the manual focus ring is completely covered. I do wish that the whole mount was about .5mm thinner - I thought I was going to be able to mount my screw-in LED ringlight with the hood in its retracted position, but there's just a bit too much contact between the back of the ringlight and the front surface of the bayonet mount on the hood.As with most Olympus hoods, this one is a bit pricey, and a part of me certainly wishes that they'd include the hoods with their lenses. On the other hand, they seem to be stressing a 'luxury' feel on most of their hoods these days, and probably feel that the 60mm Macro sells better a[$], and anybody who really wants a hood will eventually buy this one.

It's a nice lens hood, and I like its sliding mechanism, so can quickly deploy or not. On negative side is that it can make lens feel a bit wobbly on lens compared to a fixed lens.

Real con is the way Olympus make you buy these hoods in addition to their lenses... but I'm too much of a brand sucker to get the knock-offs.

Comments about Olympus LH-49 Sliding Lens Hood:

Even though this snaps into detente positions at fully-extended and fully-retracted, it cooperates nicely when only a little hood is needed or it needs to be slid forward for manual-focus. Well-designed.

This sliding lens hood is a great example of innovative design. By sliding out of the way, you can easily store the lens with hood attached. You can also vary the length of the hood if desired. I wish all hoods were designed this way!

This was my first encounter with a sliding lens hood. To put it in simple terms, all lens hoods should do this if possible. It works well, as most lens hoods do. It seems durable. It slides up and down. What more can you ask for?

Excellent design. Implementation is a bit flimsy. The only real problem is that the hood should be included with the lens by Olympus....not a high cost accessory.

The hood works very nicely, I like that it slides in and out, I wish all hoods worked that way. The construction makes it seem worth the high cost of a hood.

Now, I'd just like to know why it isn't included with the lens.

The hood is 10% of lens price. Does the cost worth it?

Consider it protects pictures from lens flare and accidental lens drop, it's your call.

Personally, I like sliding design to be a space saving feature.

The design of this hood is so practical. It slides out of the way when not in use without covering the focus limiting dial. It stays put and works very well in use. Like most of the other reviewers, I wish it had been included with the lens. Olympus just doesn't include bags or hoods so you have to pony up. I have been happy with it's performance and impressed with its design and functionality. Well made and thoughtfully engineered.

The lens hood (not unfortunately included with the lens) works well and is convenient to use. But it is expensive. The knock-offs, although much cheaper, receive bad reviews so I did not want to chance them. The combination of lens and Olympus hood becomes definitely pricey (which caused me to drop one star from my rating of an otherwise sound product).

I was reluctant at first to splash out on this lens hood, and am still a bit disappointed with Olympus for not including hoods with their lenses. However, I am very pleased with this item. I had been using a third party 46mm hood that did a good job shading the front element of the lens, but I decided to fork out for the Olympus hood. It is a nicely built item and I really like the way it slides back over the lens for storage. I would give it five stars for functionality, performance and quality, but have opted for four stars simply because of the cost of it, and the fact that it is not included with the lens.

Comments about Olympus LH-49 Sliding Lens Hood:

Well designed and fit for purpose. Easy to use, and also easy to remove and replace lens cap. The sliding feature is useful for extreme close ups. Essential equipment for the lens, so why oh why is it not included with the lens?

Comments about Olympus LH-49 Sliding Lens Hood:

This lens hood retracts back over the lens barrel. It slides smoothly and snaps lightly at both ends. It's well engineered and because of the sliding mechanism probably more expensive to make, but nevertheless, this hood should be included with the lens. Appears sturdy enough to take a knock or fall without breaking. It's grooved inside to break reflections.

Yes, it is pricey, but this may be the best lens hood I have used. It retracts so it can stay on the lens all of the time. Highly recommended.

Comments about Olympus LH-49 Sliding Lens Hood:

Comments about Olympus LH-49 Sliding Lens Hood:

It is great lens hood that slides out of the way when not needed. The hood can be left on the lens all the time, extended when the lens is used for portraits, nature or landscape, and retracted for macro photography. It fits close to the lens so it takes very little extra space in the camera bag.

The one drawback mentioned by others is the price, but I tend to use a lens hood almost all the time as a level of protection for the front element, I consider it worth the price.
